Courtney, take a deep breath. Or several. Put away (in the trash, if necessary) whatever it is you're binging on, if that's what you're doing. What baby steps can you take to get back on track? Do them.  You'll get there. I have faith in you.

I'm not entirely sure what is going on with me right now.  Last night I was very upset, and there's no mystery as to why I was out of sorts then, but it's more than that.

It's like I have taken my good habits and said "fuck you guys" and reverted to some old ways.

I'm at least exercising.  That's consistent.

If I win the lottery, I'm taking all of us to Canyon Ranch in Arizona or some other health and wellness spa so we can all have a vacation and recharge our healthy lifestyle habits.  And also get spa treatments.

Been there. Done that. Got the XXL tshirt. Is there anything you can do right now that would be a positive step for you?

I'm working really hard on my frustration with DH, and not letting that frustration spill over into me binging. It sucks.

Courtney...maybe you need a motivator. Is there something you really want or a non food treat you can give yourself for staying on track?

it's hard! DH was causing me mucho stress in the fall and i think that is how i gained the 10lbs i am still struggling to lose. Part of it was post Badwater eating, but most of it was just stress.

oh and i read the Newsweek article on obesity and it was interesting, to a point. it was really talking about how sugar and refined carbs, etc make us fat, more than calories in calories out and exercise is not a part of the solution because it just makes us hungrier.

what i disagreed about in the article was that he said that exercise was not important since it made people hungrier and it was too much effort to burn not enough calories, because health is not just about weight and i believe that cardiovascular activity is good for your health. Second thing I disagreed with was that eating meat is healthy. I am not saying that not eating meat is the only answer, but he is only looking from a weight standpoint, and when, once again, you look at the big picture of heart disease, cholesterol, etc, meat is a big factor. It was interesting though to see him really talk about how it is not just calories in vs calories out and discusses the obese children during the depression because they were eating sugar and bread/carbs, so even in a food shortage and when kids were more active, etc, they were obese. I see his point, but also, the obesity rate for children now is sooooooo much higher than during the great depression, and i do think a lot of it has to do with WHAT we are eating, not just as simple as sugar and carbs. There is a little mention of HFCS, but not enough, imo.

Who wrote the article?  Sounds like Gary Taubes.  I am suspicious of him.  He's a journalist, not a scientist or doctor.

I haven't read the article, but I wonder if he's talking about the morbidly obese? Because for those people, exercise is probably second in importance to calories. If you physically struggle to get off the couch, you have to start with just cutting the amount of food you eat.

But if that's not what he's talking about then, eh, whatever. Exercise is good for you.

I tried to read one of Taubes' books and I agree that there IS an interesting and important point about insulin and refined carbs.  But his book seemed so extreme -- for the exact reasons you described.  He basically says that calories in vs. calories out don't matter at all instead of combining the ideas and suggesting eating the appropriate amounts of appropriate foods.   My gut reaction is that he's trying to be sensational and sell books.  And a lot of people WANT to hear what he is saying -- eat meat and lots of it!

One of my good runner friends really likes him and the heavy meat & protein, anti-grain diet seems to be working for him but I think I would feel so miserable on it.

I agree with you that in this discussion we cannot deny the impact of all the changes to our food supply, the rise of supermarkets, processed foods, HFCS, corn subsidies, what types of food are the cheapest/most easily available, etc.

yep, pretty much the article. we get Newsweek at the office and the cover story caught my eye, i generally do not read a lot of magazines. I just think it is ignorant to write off things that ARE healthy, even if not promoting weight loss-- exercise, plant based diet, etc.

I read that article too and it was just so simplistic. Okay I get it. Sugar and refined carbs can be bad in large amounts. But so can just about everything else. It made it seem like that was the magic answer to people's weight loss.

Speaking of weight loss. I've noticed quite a few of our customers have lost a bit of weight. Like substantial enough for me to notice after not seeing some of these people for weeks. It was so awesome and inspiring to see the transformations! I don't know what happened or what sparked so many people to suddenly decide to shape up. But it made me feel like a slug.

Still nursing a sore throat and general respiratory hard-to--breathe icikyness, so no running for a couple more days. I think. Good news.. I found a running partner!! That should help keep me in line. I've never had a running partner before. Hopefully it goes well. We start the week after next.

Could be allergies - I know Reid sometimes has trouble sleeping when he's dealing with them. Hope it resolves soon!
