The trick will be figuring out the best way to eat while training for a half, without going nuts with carbs and stuff and without stuffing myself when I'm hungry after a long run. And I'm planning to swim 1x a week and I always get out of the pool totally ravenous. So I have to make good post-workout food choices.

Well, as you saw on the other thread. I am in this same boat. I have been STARVING since my 9 yesterday. Starving. And eating everything in sight. Yesterday was pretty rough because I was starving and I would eat, and then my tumy would say "no thank you". I am embarassed to even list everything I ate yesterday.  :-[ So, yeah, I'd like to figure this out. Hoping eating a couple of extra hundred calories every day throughout the week will help.

It helped for me to drink a LOT during the workout and then afterwards, too, and to eat a slice of bread afterwards.

But I admit, one of the reasons why I gave up swimming is the hunger, although I had more problems with itchy skin.

What half are you doing?

www.mdhalfmarathon.com

My sister lives down in MD, and she talked me into doing my first half, so we are doing it together. She says it's a nice course, not so hilly like the RW Half! It's a ways off - May - so I have a good amount of time.  :)

RA, I don't know if it's a matter of better/more calories before, and then also something more satisfying after. With WW, it's kind of loose how they count activity points vs. calories, so it's not too scientific as far as counting calories. I'm also going to focus more on ongoing hydration - not just right before or during a workout. I think that contributes to my hungry feelings after.

Ice Cream, that fits in with what you're saying too - more water! I think I'll also throw a small bar in my bag - I like the Special K cereal bars for cutting right into hunger but not upsetting my stomach. I'll either have a little bit shortly before swimming or have it to nibble right after, so I don't have to feel hungry all the way home and let it get out of control.

Aaaaand, the scale is back down a few this morning. I guess getting up to pee 5 times a night is helping.

Trader Joes stopped carrying my bread. Grrrr!

They claim they replaced it but the replacement has double the calories and isnt even the same type of bread.

What one do you like? I like their sprouted wheat fiber bread. It's 90cal/slice- but they are big slices, so I just use one and cut it in half. I also buy the sara lee delightful wheat- which is 45 calories/slice. DD likes that one better.

Its a local bread company called alverado street bakery and they make a flax seed wheat bread that is just perfect (not sweet, a little crunch, and 90 cals for 2 slices).

My parents were part of the original coop that started that bakery... my mom designed their logo.  :D

You might have to go to a healthfood store to find it. I can find it in the refridgerated section of our local healthfood coop (it comes in frozen).

Probiotic update:

I've been taking them for a week and I feel less bloated.  Also (TMI!) have had more formed stools.

I'll update again after it's been a month.

Yes but I ran out so I need to get more. I think they are helping.

Also turns out I am not gluten intolerant.

I an proud of myself for getting up early to run in the morning today. I am never successful at getting up early and I despise morning runs buying am going out with coworkers tonight to celebrate one of our undergrads getting into the grad program so now I won't feel guilty tonight.

By the way this kids story is amazing to me. He moved to the us from China at sixteen six years ago speaking almost no English. He had problems with the high school because th hey put him in ninth grade and went teaching him English so he dropped out and went to adult school and got his ged. He then went to community college and transferred to Berkeley (a top university) and now he is accepted into one of the top five programs in the country for grad school. Amazing!

That is a very cool story, wow!

And way to go for getting the run in early and now being able to go out and enjoy the evening. Very nice! I am still working on making better use of morning time to get runs in, and not having much success just yet.

I think I am within about a pound of my goal weight and I feel funny about it. Like I will be afraid to stop doing WW because I'll gain back. I'll have to wrap my head around sensible maintaining and not continual dieting.
