How about an ongoing wine recommendation thread, or review that is sticky? I'm always looking for a good, cheap wine. My recent find was
Castilla Castillo de Molina sauvignon blanc. I think it was 2006. It was under $12 I believe.I wish I had taken the pic of the label so I could remember which one I tasted. So how about taking the pic of the bottle as well?

My favorite right now is Menage A Trois red by Folie A Deux. I was *thrilled* when they started carrying it at Safeway. I think it retails for $12 but Safeway is a bit cheaper. It's a blend of Zin, Cab, and Merlot.

Have you had the Shoofly Shiraz? It runs around $10 at our World Market and it quite yummy.
I also can always be in the mood for Ecco Domani or Coppola pinot grigio :-*

I was surprised by the coppola wines -- I fully expected them to suck, I thought they were just a vanity project or a gimmick. But I've tried several and enjoyed them.

Yep- we like the coppola wines quite a bit here too. Blue label for every day, black label for something a little more special. :)

If there were only one wine left in the entire world and this was it, I'd be a happy, happy girl. It pairs well with pasta, meats, fish, salads, cheese and chocolate. I find it to be the perfect (cheap) wine. It's mellow, buttery and feels like a warm hug on your insides. :-*

I second the Menage a Trois red. The white is a bit sweet, but good with jambalaya and Thai food.
Windmill Old Vine Zindfandel is AWESOME.
Recently tried a red called Layer Cake that was really good.
We also tried a $4 malbec (Lucky Duck) that we picked up at WalMart. The first night it sucked. The next night I talked my neighbor into trying it (because it was open) and she said it was ok. Sure enough, it was ok. Not super good, but ok. Which is pretty good for $4. Just let it breathe.

Foris Flyover Red (2003- from Oregon's Rogue Valley). Can't find a picture!Again, tried on a whim at a wine bar and have been chasing it down ever since ($9) Love this one!

The best wine out there is Cantina Zaccagnini, IMHO. It is from the Montepulciano D'abruzzo region of Italy, and it goes for about $13. So many great dry red wines are from this area, and this one can be found in most liquor stores here in New Joisey. I can't really post a pic right now, but it has a bamboo string around the bottle tied to a short stick of some sort - very unique packaging!

I like this one too. It's nice and smooth and kind of light. I found it to be great for lunch, because it doesn't hit you hard. It's the kind of wine that has a really nice balance despite coming from three different grapes. It isn't anything profound, but it's one that is consistently good. Great for the price, for sure. I have a few wine reviews that I will pull out later, some that really stand out for a great price. I'm not big into wine, but I can tell you all about chocolate! Now if anyone wants to start a chocolate thread.... :D

Not sure how much I can contribute to this thread as I usually only drink NZ wine (and occassionally Italian)however, I did think that I could recommend some so that if you do happen to spot it in the Wine store you might recognise it.
I am going to break trend in this thread though and recommend a white I had a wedding on Saturday. It was a Pinot Gris (I am not normally a white kind of person either) and I really enjoyed it with some Kingfish that I had.

Hess Cabernet is a pretty good choice for a relatively cheap but not too awful cab. They have a couple of different grades, but get the cheapest one because the most expensive isn't that much better. But honestly, it's hard to find a good red at bargain basement prices. On the other hand cheap whites abound. And it's almost summertime anyway, so buy a 1.5 liter bottle of Fontina Candida Frascati and enjoy those Delaware sunsets.

Oh, for a decent but inexpensive sauvignon blanc, try Ferrari. Actually, it's labeled as fume blanc, but no real difference there. How close are you to Beach Liquor in Bethany Beach? Nice shop. And if you get there, try their Hendry unoaked chardonnay. Very nice, dry, crisp white. If you want to spend a few more bucks for a special occasion, keep an eye out for Chehalem INOX unoaked chardonnay. It's from Oregon and you can't do better for a clean, dry white.

Chehalem Three-Vinyards Pinot Noir is very nice. They also carry some more expensive single vinyard versions (e.g., Ridgecrest), but probably not worth the extra cost unless your SO really knows her stuff. Either way, this isn't really cheapo wine. But I don't think you can go low-end on pinot noir and get anything worth drinking.

Now that's a really good point about "breathing". I didn't really believe that made a difference until I tried decanting and aerating some cheapo S. American wine that I was just about ready to throw out. OMG, what a difference it made. Between completely undrinkable and not so bad. If you find yourself drinking something that tastes way to sharp and tannic, get some air in it. Makes a huge difference. Picking a decent cheap wine is only half the battle. Knowing what to do to make it taste pretty good is the other half.

I lived on Pelee Island for a couple of years... I used to drink a lot of their Hulda's Rock Chardonnay, but I suspect I couldn't stomach much of it anymore (have lost my taste for oaky chardonnays)... I can get their pinot grigio with the bird on it here, but not the butterfly one. Huh. The bird one isn't very good, IMO. Their pinot noir with the red-winged blackbird is pretty good.
But speaking of Ontario summer quaffing wines, 20 Bees Pinot Grigio is very tasty!

Here are some other ones I have been enjoying:
Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc -another NZ white perfect for summer, with its light, floral taste.
Cupcake Petite Sirah - Big enough to stand up to lots of heavier foods, but not as heavy as a cab. It is very smooth.
Fat Bastard Shiraz - Ok, I bought it because I found the name funny and my sister was visiting...and she has been bugging me. But I enjoyed it. It teamed well with a pork tenderloin that had been marinated in hoisin sauce plus about 10 other ingredients. Another one I bought for my sister´s visit was the Middle Sister "Smarty Pants" -a white blend that was surprisingly tasty. I bought it simply because of the funny caption aboutmiddle sisters (and yes, I am one) on the back...it was a little bit of a baufungoo to her (she´s the eldest).

I miss my Portuguese wines though. The PT are terrible about promoting their products abroad. I also miss some of the Italian wines I could find over there.

I'm not generally a big fan of sangiovese, possibly I've had too many bad ones, but this one is delicious. Soft but not light, very drinkable. Reasonably priced.

The region is "USA" for a theme, and although I have a good pinot noir in mind as a back up, I want to bring zinfandel because, well, it's the american wine. Ravenswood wines are less here. I remember you saying the NZ wines were much more expensive for you too. And I have seen Gnarly Head in the store but have never tried it. Where is Jan? I am sure she will have some ideas.

Bogle old vine red zinfandel is a good buy.
For an excellent wine at a modest price ($18) The 2007 Robert Hall Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles) is wonderful.

I think the Ravenswood is pretty decent. The No. 8 is probably less good than the Gnarly Head, but close. I think the Coppola is supposed to be good, but I don't know if I've had it.

But Fat Bastard is french and not so cheap ($18 - evidently I live in the wrong part of the world). There's a really nice Petit Syrah from Mexico I can get here, but it's from Mexico...

I think the only California pinot noir I can get for less than $40 is Sterling Vineyards (at about $15)... I actually really really like the 2008 (but it's getting harder to find); the 2009 is nice, but not as good.

Heh, no, it's seems we spend a long time gearing up for these wine-tasting dinners. There were plenty of holiday parties with plenty of wine, but the wine-tasting parties are somewhat SERIOUS with this crowd of neighbours. Also we have to work dates around two dudes who work on the offshore oil rigs on different schedules...
Here´s a confession: I like blends. In fact, I think I prefer blends. Does that make me less sophisticated or more? :-X

Right now a Mendoza Malbec from Argentina. It is fruit forward and went well with our seafood dinner even if technically not the right pairing. Went to my head though ... needed more post run hydration.

I rarely meet a cab sauv I don't like. It just seems to be a very drinkable wine. Even the 2buck chuck variety is completely drinkable.

Portuguese! I like Douros. I also like Daos and the reds from the Alentejo. PT wines are generally inexpensive for the quality (imo).

I really like NZ sauvingnon blancs... that's what made me realize that although I remain convinced there's a red wine for every occassion, white wine is good too...

Today I picked up a bottle of Goose Bump Velvety Red 2010 (Sicilian) for $4.49. DW needs something for the roast tomorrow, but she doesn't need a whole bottle. It's a bit too sweet for me, but it isn't bad. It should go with some kind of cheese or blood sausage or horsesteak. Too much character for drink alone. Though I'm managing a glass or two.

I don't think I've ever seen Vermentino... I'll have to look for it. If it does well with fish, I assume it's a fairly dry white?

yes, you are right. i remember i have drank also a fizzy, crisp version of the Vermentino.
i would like to suggest this one, sparkly, if you can find. otherwise is good also the Vermentino normal. wonderful, : " Vermentino is a light-skinned wine grape variety" .
i suggest with a nice first plate of , for example,

Not sure if anyone still reads this, but I found a red I really like. I never (well, rarely) drink wine, but after having this at a friend's house, I wanted a bottle.
It's called "The Prisoner"... Weird... I don't know much about it other than it's a red and I got it on sale for $30, so it's normally around $40, I think. I really like it! For me to spend that much on wine... It has to be tasty :D

I had to look up "grippy" :D and no, I don't think this is grippy, I could drink this non-stop. I told my mom about this wine and mentioned that I liked this because it wasn't such an astringent red.

Oh, I didn't mean to call it mediocre. It's perfectly drinkable and not all that expensive. But for $35 you can do better. E.g., Chehalem 3 Vineyard pinot noir, $35.34.

I was drinking it while making dinner, and thought it was really good on its own that I could drink it all night. It was very fruit forward, and lacked the dreaded tannin. I made some kind of poached chicken with some citrusy sauce, and a pile of greek salad to go with this wine and it was perfect.

Love, love Rias Baixas Albarino. It's what I get when it's in the wine list cause they are hard to come by in our wine shop. It's very light and fruity. Perfect with manchego cheese or sweet olives. Yum! I need to go hunting for a bottle to add to my summer whites.
I just discovered Seaglass, I think it was a sauv blanc. It was quite refreshing. I could have drank the entire bottle. Pretty label too!

If you like KC, you would definitely like Nobilo SB. And it's a bit cheaper than KC. Cloudy Bay is awesome too! but a bit pricy. Something about NZ SB's that rocks my world.

For those who like Albarinos, the PT equivalent is a Alvarinho and often, used in Vinho Verdes. Great summer wines.
I also just tried a Vinho Verde Rose from Trader Joes. Super cheap...like $6 or something, but perfect for a barbecue.

I had malbec in mind but how could I say 'no' to the beaujolais nouveau? And it was really, really good with what I ate (a kale salad with currants and manchego + grits).

I decided to make time to open a bottle last night after all... if the one I sampled is anything to go on, the 2015 run is a fat and jammy one... I can absolutely see it paired with kale and manchego. Yum. We had it with a mixed root vegetable hash and a soft boiled egg.

the guy at the package store insisted it smells of coffee - i do not agree. it smells like most pinot noir. BUT. once you get it down the hatch, there is a slight smokiness and a distinct hint of vanilla. it's nice.

we've tasted two so far, and they are surprisingly different... one was very fruity (but not cloying) with a good touch of bitterness and mineral, the other was somewhat fruity but more on the spicy side with a good dose of bitterness... both medium bodied, a lot less heavy than the 2015... I expect it will be very good with thanksgiving dinner

white from pinot noir, so not surprisingly is reminiscent of champagne in flavour... slight blush, very slight carbonation... drinks well slightly chilled and room temp

"The Tesch Deep Blue is an interesting white. The term ‘Blanc de Noirs’ refers to the fact that this is a white wine vinified from red grapes. Red wines typically gain their color from being fermented in contact with the grape skins, stems and seeds; this is also where the tannic qualities of red wines originate.
The wine itself has a brassy hue, which is deeper than most whites. Although given that the grapes involved are red some color can be expected. On the nose the Deep Blue enjoys notes of red fruit, peach with some minerality. Felicette Grenache Blanc. If you can find it anywhere, pick it up. It was one of the selections at a wine show here a month ago, and I bought the last bottle in the province last week. I've never had grenache blanc outside of a blend before. It's lovely.

No. There is a locally owned wine and beer store near my house that has it. You can order it online though...

anyone here ever had a Lacrima? we bought this recently:

and it is unlike any wine I've ever had... heavy of orange blossom on the nose (if you've had any middle eastern orange blossom water flavoured desserts or salads, you know exactly the smell) and tastes nearly sweet but feels very dry... it was confounding in the best possible way... I really liked it, but it seemed both important to not think to much about it, and also impossible to not think to much about it
I may need to buy a case to see how it ages. Also, I've never seen it before and may never see it again out here, so it might be worth the investment.

Wikipedia was not helpful: Lacrima is the Latin word for tear. It may refer to: Lacrima (grape), a rare red wine grape variety native to the Marche region of Italy. Asprinio Bianco or Lacrima, a white Italian wine grape variety grown primarily in southwest Italy around the Naples region of Campania.
(I have actually made a Middle Eastern rice pudding with orange blossom water and it was not "enough" for me. Although technically the recipe called for rose water, but I couldn't find any and substituted. Makers 46 bourbon has some orange blossom on the nose to me sometimes - I guess some barrels or years get more of that than others).

the one I had was a red... I love orange blossom water, but it was a mindf*ck on the wine.
I think I have told you this before, but all I can ever smell with bourbon is ripe banana.

I have not had a Lacrima but it sounds interesting. Your description reminds me of a Slovene wine - Teran - https://the-slovenia.com/gastronomy/wine/top-slovenian-wine-teran/ which has that same citrus burst. It is an acquired taste but really good in the right circumstances.

interesting... I am also always on the lookout for lower ABV wines since so many these days are up in the 13-14% range... unfortunately, there are no Terans (and no Slovenian wines at all) available here, but I did submit it as a suggestion on the liquor control board site!
