Least favorite running conditions?
« on: November 25, 2014, 10:03:41 AM »
If you ask me in August, I will say hot and humid.

But looking at the forecast in Philadelphia for tomorrow, I am going with "slightly above freezing and raining."  Freezing cold rain is the worst, you can't get warm. I'll take 10 degrees and snow over freezing rain.

For me it's heat and sunshine.  Gah, I can't take it.  You can always put on more clothes.  You can only take so much off.

But more clothes just means more icy cold wetness.

I am bracing myself for icy cold wetness.  :(

We've been talking about this too!

It's hard for me to really express the depth of my hatred for running when it's really hot. I melt. I'm miserable. The entire run, my body is screaming-- no! stop! don't! you can't! It's awwwwwful!

That said dark, whipping wind, and 37 degree "rain" is pretty effing miserable. Especially this time of year because I am pretty much freezing all of the time. So, to go from work (where I freeze) to take my clothese off, put running clothes on, and be that awful combo of hot on the inside and freeeeeezing on the outside, to that post-run bone chill.  :nono:

I disagree with being able to add a layer. When it's windy and dumping freezing rain... there really is no combination of layers that's just right.

I'd definitely rather run in warmer rain or drier colder conditions. And maybe even heat.

But, we only get a few of those days a year and I'm just not die hard enough to run in that most of the time.

"slightly above freezing and raining."

It's a toss up between this and 80+ deg. and high humidity. Tough call, but I'll agree with you on the condition that I'm heat-acclimated for the hot run, during which I'll drink plenty of fluids and seek out a shady route.

Colder than about -15 F, warmer than 90; I can handle most anything else, even humidity although that takes some acclimation
Winds >30 mph
Early mornings (anything before about 7 AM)
No one likes running in rain in the high 30s low 40s

I won't take that either.  Even when I'm in good shape, I can't breathe below around 13 degrees.  (Right now, I can barely breathe in the 20s, but I'm in lousy shape.)

Also, I don't care what the temperature is or how light/heavy the rain, running with lightning is out.  Too dangerous.

1 on heavy cold rain.  Heavy rain in 80 degree weather is good, though

I am bracing myself for icy cold wetness.  :(

I've never been able to acclimate to the heat. My internal engine revs. I heat up quickly and well. I have a really hard time running in the heat.

It is hard for me to breathe in the extreme cold, like below 20F, but I have learned  that covering my neck helps that some.

Same here, I die in heat. Cold rain just makes me miserable.

False alarm though.  The rain hadn't started yet when I ran this morning. :)

I am similarly torn between hot & humid and cold rain.   I think I've felt worse on long runs in the heat & humidity than in the cold rain though.  With the exception of that recent long run where my hands were so cold that it just felt like incredible pain.

Ice is awful, but makes running impossible.

I'm a toss up too.. The heat and humidity are awful but you can adjust your pace and slow down.. The best thing about the humid runs is that when you get the next dry, coolish day you feel like a super hero..

Cold, wet rain is so hard to get out the door

Cold, wet rain is so hard to get out the door

I exchanged a hilarious string of texts with one of my running partners on a cold, rainy, early morning. She was up, dressed, and just couldn't get herself motivated to run in the rain. I finally convinced her that if she was dressed, she could meet for a run.  She agreed.  When I arrived at our meeting spot - no Annie! She stood me up!  I ran in the rain and it really wasn't that bad and when I got home, I had this text waiting for me:

"I am worse than the gum stuck to a taxicab floor. Will you ever forgive me?"

:D
