Deviled eggs are definitely on my list. What do you do to put the devil in them? I add a fine dice of jalapeno, but in a pinch, I've got some very hot ground pepper. Got to be careful with that stuff, though. I don't know where it falls out on the Scoville scale, but pretty high.
My stepmother makes the BEST deviled eggs. Aside from the green olives I have no idea what she does. I think they are good because she is related to the devil... I also don't think deviled eggs are retro.I kind of like that pale green colored cool whip and marshmallow "salad". Is canned fruit and cottage cheese "retro"? My parents used to feed us that as dessert. I'd still eat it.
I’ve been seeing deviled eggs on menus for the last few years. They are popular again because people want more low carb options, IMO.
But, how do you explain the 'tots?
That's Watergate salad, I believe. One of my friends brought that to a b-day party (in FL) earlier this week. It definitely references Jello and aspic salads of yore: Jell-O Art of the 20s and 30s.Likewise, I (a bona fide Northerner) do not consider deviled eggs to be retro. Other examples of so-called retro food in this thread so far strike me as basic 'Murricanized comfort food. For true retro cuisine, check out the Gallery of Regrettable Food.
