Is cilantro necessary?
« on: August 26, 2016, 05:25:42 PM »
I mean, really.  I'm one of those people who taste it as soap.  Vile soap. I can tolerate a little. The past two mexican restaurants I've been to have loaded the food with it.  Should have been called a Cilantroito, not a Burrito.

Do you cilantro lovers really need that much of it?

I think it has a fresh, green taste, if that makes any sense. I actually kind of *get* where the soap thing is coming from, but I don't find that part of the flavor profile overwhelming.

I really love cilantro, but I am careful about cooking with it for guests, because I know people have strong feelings about it.

I think it's OK, not crazy about it, but don't hate it.

love it.  I'll never forget being at my trimming mentors house in SC.   she made giant salads filled with cilantro.   at first i gagged and only ate it to be polite.  by the end of the week i was obsessed with it and loved it.

It tastes like soap. I do tend to wonder if you can acclimate to the taste by just eating more and more until it tastes 'fresh and green' vs soap. Where possible when eating out I request to not have it added to my food. Often it's in salsa already and that can't be helped, but please don't add any extra!

Nephew gets the soap thing too. I guess it's like only some people can smell asparagus pee.

I used to dislike it and no longer do. I am not sure if i thought it tasted like soap or if i just did not like it. I did not know the soap thing until after I liked it.

It tastes like rotting vegetable garbage juice to me not like soap.  The worst food crimes are when it is in guacamole or salsa because then the garbage juice soaks into everything.

The haiku section of ihatecilantro.com sums it up well

Some people can't eat anything with spicy flavoring, others can't tolerate garlic. I guess you just need to ask before ordering, or read labels.

I can't smell asparagus pee.  The boyfriend can.

I can't distinguish the taste of cilantro as far as I can tell.  I was going to grow some this year, but it didn't work out.

Hmmm.  Mr. OL gets the asparagus pee and is not a fan of cilantro.  I love cilantro and don't get the asparagus pee.   23andMe has looked at both cilantro and asparagus, I wonder if they're related?
