Great Jewish recipes go here
« on: November 24, 2015, 11:15:23 PM »
We are having a Hanukkah party in a few weeks and I want to make a great dish! Matzo Ball soup and latkes are already being made. Anyone have a recipe I could use?

You could make a tsimmes, or sufganiyot. I don't have recipes myself, but I'm sure the Internet does :)

Fun!  So many yummy things to make.  If you want light, make an Israeli salad http://toriavey.com/toris-kitchen/2010/01/israeli-salad-week/ and tehina http://toriavey.com/toris-kitchen/2010/01/tahini-sauce/  I'd go in this direction as a counterpoint to the latkes and matzo ball soup.

Or make babaganoush (tons of recipes out there)

I can post more stuff tomorrow.

Sweet noodle kugel

Boil a pound of egg noodles.  Mix a pint of sour cream with a quart of full fat small curd cottage cheese. Half a cup to a full cup of sugar. Three eggs. A little vanilla. A handful of raisins. Smoosh together and put into a baking dish. 325 for 45 minutes. Yum.

Seriously, besides challah, sweet noodle kugel may be the most delicious Jewish food out there. Or knishes, but those would be more work to make.

Excellent! Sweet noodle kugel and tzimmes are def getting made.

It's funny to see Brisket suggested. In the south we've got plenty of brisket available, though I'm sure it's not quite the same.

Pickled beef tongue is a big No.

You can make it with brisket, too, as a main dish. My mom is doing that for Hanukkah. I found a recipe like what she makes: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/grandma-ethels-brisket-with-tzimmes-231787

ETA - she also makes sweet kugel with fruit bits instead of just raisin... I think it's raisin, cranberry and apple?  It takes the kugel to the next level IMHO. She uses this stuff:

I was just looking for a place to post and it kind of fits here.  :P The Kindle version of this book is on sale for $1.99.

I really have no idea if it's any good, but it has good reviews so I bought it.

Truthfully, I made a less fussy version based on this one but always like his recipes ...

Interesting, never heard of it and I spent a whole summer in Israel and never heard of it!

who has a good shakshuka recipe?

I  make Smitten Kitchen's shakshuka all the time because it's so tasty and easy.  I sometimes omit the feta if I'm trying to avoid cheese after overindulging too much.
Ottolenghi has a wonderful-looking shakshuka but I have not made it.
