Lack of energy
« on: May 19, 2015, 12:48:18 PM »
I'm fairly new to running and I'm highly content with the progress I've made as I was not able to run more than 1.5 minutes without being out of breath. The problem is that lately I've had no energy left to start running after work; some of it might be lazyness but I push myself to continue even though I can't help but wonder how much longer until I can stop even if I know I have a couple more minutes in me. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Can you run in the morning before you're worn out from life?

I have never been successful running in the evening, I just want to sit down and stare at the TV.

I suggest getting up earlier in the morning. Nothing like a run to get your head in the right place before work. If you cannot do that you may need to quit your job. ;)

I've given this consideration in the beginning but I leave for work really early (0520) since I have a long commute ahead of me but I will give it a shot. Thanks for the replies.

You might also want to try having a mid-afternoon snack 3 hours before you run. I've found this gives me more energy to run after work.

Black coffee before a run usually gives me some jump.

if I have to run in the evening, I try to eat in the afternoon... a banana about an hour before running works for me.

Also, have you increased the amount of running you are trying to accomplish by a lot recently, rather than by a little bit?

I've increased the amount significantly since I'm trying to reach a certain goal.

I confess to having at least three mid-afternoon snacks.

Has anyone tried energy gels? If so, what's your thoughts?

They're not really worth it unless you're running a half marathon or longer, I don't think.
You might just need a snack and more water earlier in the day before your run. Or caffeine as suggested.

How far are you running? Are you running every day or taking rest days? Cross training?

I try running between 1 and 2 miles three times a week; mostly monday, wednesday, and friday in order to have some resting periods in between.

How long do these runs take to complete?

10-20 minutes? Not including warming up and cooling down afterwards.

you probably aren't running too much, my guess is you need an afternoon snack and maybe more sleep generally

or perhaps it's not how much you eat but what you are eating?
