And are they really a good indication of aerobic fitness?
I don't think they are. Maybe a two mile run is a better test of aerobic fitness.
I do sometimes enjoy just going out running a mile as fast as I can.
-
50 or so. I ran a 6:34 in March 1981 on 40-50 miles per month. Then a ran over 130 miles the next two months and I ran 6:03 and 5:52 in April and May. But two miles are a better indicator of aerobic fitness.
-
Not necessarily the best aerobic indicator, but they're fun. Like you said, sometimes it's nice and therapeutic just going out there and throwing down a balls-to-the-wall mile.
-
No, but I love to race the mile on the track.
-
I get some satisfaction from doing them...but I don't pretend they're fun...being in the red zone for 6.5 (I'm not fast) minutes sucks a dick...

I think it's kind of fun if you're rested beforehand, it's painful but there is a nice endorphin rush at the end.
I get a semblance of a runner's high after doing one.

I liken them to holding my breath for 6 minutes while someone beats me :D

I have that mental and physical feeling at the end of a 5k race, I wonder why the hell I signed up for this abuse.

I used to really enjoy racing the mile back in my mid 30s. Racing two miles wasn't as much fun, but still fun. My favorite race was at 50 yds which kinda clarifies what determines my opinion on distances to race.

If you really want to hurt, go out for an 800m time trial!

I've done them, ouch.
-
My running club does them quarterly. We use them to set our pace for our speed work.

There's a great race - a 26 x 1-mile relay, called the Marathon Cup Challenge. You get 26 different people to each run a mile on the track (+ one person who does the .2) for a total of a marathon. Great race, there were 12 teams this year.

The mile is a good test of overall fitness because it requires both speed and endurance. 3K-5K are better tests for aerobic fitness, but the mile can work. A lot of high school XC programs use a mile time trial to test for baseline fitness and to establish pace times for workouts.
-
Yeah, I run the mile and plug it into the McMillan calculator.
-
No. I haven't done a 5k in ages, either.

I ran a mile in an all comers meet in Amherst in the 5:15-5:45 group and finished last in 5:38. One of the guys who beat me after the race taunted me for coming in last. Then there was a 2 mile race after that in the middle of the he saw me coming and had a panicked look in his face and he dropped out when I passed.

You crushed his spirit...that's BETTER than a win! :D

That's good Karma.
I ran the summer track series there in the late 1990s, as the darkhorse masters miler. Good times!

I ran it in 1983 and 84. Drove from Boston just to run a 5K in 83 and Mile in 84. They did a great job.
