I swear I've read some where to do this.
I had a mayo that I liked that didn't have a bunch of crap in it but now I've noticed recently there's EDTA in it. And I can't find a mayo w/out it in my regular grocery store.
So, I sent the kid to school today w/a balogna (not really balogna--it's just what we call it) and cheese sandwich with greek yogurt and mustard. Is he gonna hate me?

I don't know, but I'm going to try subbing plain greek yogurt for sour cream in my tuna noodle casserole this week. :fingers:

I doubt hate but maybe not eating the sandwich. I think you can use yogurt to cut the mayo in tuna salad, coleslaw, etc. but alone on bread I'd guess is pretty gross. But, report back. Maybe I'm wrong.
-
i don't know that i'd enjoy greek yogurt instead of mayo in a bologna and cheese sandwich. but, hey. he might love it.
mayo is pretty easy to make if you have a good blender.
-
make your own or maybe use butter instead? I think butter would give that rich mouth feel to replace mayo. Greek yogurt is going to be tangy and watery and will change the sandwich experience.

Do you cook your eggs? I've never cared for jarred mayonnaise, but Julia Child's recipe is wonderful. And involves raw eggs so I almost never make it.

I have used greek yogurt in place of mayo in salad dressing recipes (and in fact still had to include some mayo bcz all greek yogurt did not taste good to me.) I think plain on a sandwich would be gross...but I also don't like mayo so there is that. Report back what kiddo says...did he know he wasn't getting mayo?
-
Yes, report back and stop torturing your kid.

I used some Greek yogurt dip today, with french onion flavor. It was good. I would use that on a sandwich.

My non-vegan mayo-loving boyfriend puts Vegenaise into his mayo rotation because he loves it! (Along with baconnaise, wasabi mayo, etc)

I wouldn't think you could make it with cooked eggs. You can, however, preserve it by lacto-fermenting mayonnaise with some yogurt whey... changes the texture a bit but not too much... lasts for weeks rather than days that way.
I use plain yogurt instead of sour cream in anything I might use sour cream for. I haven't bought sour cream for many years. I will use yogurt instead of mayo in tuna salad (and similar sandwich spreads), potato salad, etc... and I will drain greek yogurt to thicken it further and use it as a cream cheese replacement.
I have never put it on a bologna sandwich though.
-
I do use it, like others here, in salad dressings and as a substitute for sour cream. But I think the sandwich thing would be yucky. Sorry.

That sounds good. Maybe I'll mix it w/some leftover onion soup mix I have. No update on the sandy, kid didn't even take a bite yesterday.

Plain greek yogurt is really good on toast, with either jelly or honey. I like it better than butter.
-
Do you cook your eggs?
nope. i like to live on the edge.

You could pasteurize your egg before you make mayo. I probably wouldn't bother because I'm not overly concerned (I generally eat more cookie dough than gets made into cookies!) but if raw egg squicks you out this might be worth a try:

raw egg for me? no problem. raw egg for my child? no way.

Butter us the only condiment DH will eat on a sandwich. It's a Brit thing. I asked MIL to throw together a PBJ for DD once and I caught her putting butter on UNDERNEATH the PB. I wasn't so sure about how that would taste, but butter goes well with most lunch meats and (of course) cheese.

that's funny... I hate butter on bread with cheese or meat or soups of any sort, but I love toast with butter and peanutbutter.

My dad would sometime butter the bread before making us PB&Js.
-
You can rarely go wrong with butter, IME

My dad would always do that. I can't remember him making any kind of sandwich without buttering the bread first. I never thought about it as a British thing, but there's probably something to that. We also had to have bread and butter on the dinner table every night. Seems weird now.

That's why I won't make my own. I'm not going to pasteurize the eggs. And I've just always told myself that the eggs in the store bought mayo are pastureized, whiich is how I can eat it.

My family puts butter on jam sandwiches, too. I grew up doing that.
-
I've eaten butter and jam on toast, so seems logical. We also eat cream cheese and jelly.

Yes! Yum!
-
so the plain greek w/a bit of mustard is ok on a sandy. Can barely taste the yogurt at all.
-
You can buy past. eggs for making your own mayo; i guess my risk tolerance is just different because I also let my kiddos eat cookie/cake batter with raw eggs
-
I'm too nervous. It would be better if I weren't.

Whatever they do to sterilize eggs in this country, it must be pretty effective. I've eaten a lot of raw and undercooked eggs. A whole lot. As far as I know, there have been zero ill effects.
