I just made some really tasty ice cream - vanilla base with cherries and semi-sweet chocolate shavings. It's suppose to be dessert for a dinner party we're having on Wednesday, but it's going to be hard to resist eating it all up!
What are some of your favorite ice cream flavors?
-
it is not uncommon for me to bake two pies, eat one, and cut the other into chunks and freeze it.
once the chunks are frozen, i add them to the ice cream maker with vanilla base.
fave flavors are apple, peach, blueberry, or straw-rhubarb.
-
My grandma used to make ice cream with boysenberries from her patch and peaches from her tree. (not together) Holy yum!
Incidentally, July is National Ice Cream Month. Kenyan and I went to the local scoop shop to celebrate. He had bubble gum, I had moose tracks.

lavender & honey might be my all-time favourite
as far as sorbets go though, cherry & lemon
-
Hello to you, too!

I had lemon dill at one of our favorite local places the other day- it was yummy!

:D
I like the pie idea, witchy!
My usual fruit-based ice creams are strawberry or peach, although I did make mango one time. We had a lot of Thin Mint ice cream this spring, but the girl scout cookies are all gone now.

I'm totally intrigued by the lavender & honey idea! I haven't tried to make sorbets yet, but maybe that's next on the list.

Huh. I have a hard time imagining dill in a sweet item. Glad to hear it was tasty!
-
I adore dill,so it wasn't much of a stretch for me!!!
-
I dislike dill immensely so it doesn't sound good to me, but does sound interesting.
My favorite flavors are salted caramel and pumpkin. I love it when pumpkin season arrives.
-
mr. 'poo makes a delicious black pepper ice cream.
-
Tahini (or sesame honey) but I only get it when I can go to my friend's house and make it.
Like halvah soft serve for anyone who has had it in Israel.
-
sounds good but uber fattening, teetime
-
my sister made a fabulous peach rosemary ice cream a couple of years ago.

Hmmm.
I've had pineapple basil sorbet. That was good.

Stawberry frozen yogurt.
Over a toasted waffle.
Under some chocolate sauce.
I haven't had it in a month. I'm on a sugar fast.

Hmm, we have some leftover waffles in the freezer. Might have to try this soon!

I'm liking all these neat herb ideas!
last year or the year before I made a thyme-buttermilk sorbet that was very nice... I should do it again.
-
Some great ideas here! I think I'm going to have to break out the ice cream maker this weekend... I had a cucumber sorbet a few weeks ago that was amazing.

was it sweet?
-
Homemade my favorites were:
Light chocolate base, a raspberry coulis with chambord, brownie chunks.
Vanilla base, apple pie filling, streusel.
Pumpkin with streusel.
Vanilla base with Marula cream liqueur added.
I would bake the streusel on a cookie sheet and then freeze.
-
I'm going to make ice cream this weekend!
Probably going with coffee with mini chocolate chips.
-
was it sweet?
Mildly sweet, but not overly so. More crisp and refreshing, if that makes sense. It was very interesting.

makes sense! more of a palate cleanser than a sweet... I'm going to peruse the net for recipes...

I made some popsicles with with watermelon, mint, and tequila! We're going to try them tonight. Still trying to decide if we should call them Poptails or Cocksicles. ;)
-
I prefer cocksickles, personally :d
How did you get them to fully freeze/set with the tequila in them? I know you didn't use gelatin. agar maybe?

Here's the recipe I used:
http://www.hungrygirlporvida.com/blog/2012/07/16/watermelon-mint-tequila-popsicles/ (http://www.hungrygirlporvida.com/blog/2012/07/16/watermelon-mint-tequila-popsicles/)
They said it just takes longer for them to freeze (hence why we didn't try them last night). Plus the ratio of tequila to everything else is pretty low. I'll report back later.
-
interesting. please report back!

Agreed!
-
The cocksicles were great! They weren't super hard because of the alcohol, but we thought that was a good thing. There was just enough tequila, but not too much. Very refreshing!
-
good to know! :D

Omg, it's definitely a calorie bomb and is best with a good bit of salt too so I'm not sure there are any redeeming qualities outside of taste. Though, the tahini is rich enough that whole milk instead of cream is just fine.
Just back from Cape Cod where we live a mile from the most amazing ice cream shop in the world (Sundae School if anyone is mid-Cape bound this summer). We had a black out and just had to follow night one of ice cream with finishing off the large container of crystallized ginger ice cream in the freezer. I love ginger. It was SO good. If I had an ice cream maker and wasn't so soft around the middle and other places too right now I'd find a recipe make some! (Usually summer is my sweet spot for being tan and lean ... not so much with this current ice cream love affair :skeered:)
-
PS, today's NYtimes has an article on alcoholic slushy drinks. I bet they would be easy to make in cocksicle format.

all of them do :drooling-5:

I just bought an ice cream maker, our old one broke a few years ago, so ice cream making is in the plans for today :D Probably cookies n cream, and then mint chip! We are trying to avoid carragenan and it is in almost every non dairy ice cream.
-
why are you avoiding carageenan?
-
why are you avoiding carageenan?
We have done some research on it and there seem to be two camps, one that says it is safe and another that is inflammatory to the gut. DH always has IBS symptoms which got 85% better eliminating dairy, so I decided to see if eliminating the carageenan made a difference as well. There seems to be a lot of conflicting info on it, but imo, the less ingredients in my food the better ;)
