Title: epicurious favorites
Post by: teetime on February 14, 2012, 03:26:04 PM
Some of my favorite recipes come from epicurious but unless I know exactly what I want, I find browsing difficult.  E.g., the "top rated" chicken recipes aren't very exciting but there are hidden jems (i.e., fabulous well rated recipes that are burried).

I've found most of my favorites based on recommendations.  So, thought it would be fun to have a best of epicurious thread here.

One of mine is the crust from this apricot tart.  The filling is meh and someday I'll try a fig or chocolate something swap.  But still, everytime I've made it people have raved about the crust texture, taste and looks appeal.

http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Apricot-Tart-with-Cornmeal-Crust-104527 (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Apricot-Tart-with-Cornmeal-Crust-104527)

Note, it never got much attention.  I actually pulled it from the magazine on a whim.

Ever since you posted the top one, for the first time, it's been my go to mole recipe.  I've never made the full dish but with some tweaks, love that sauce.

This is an awesome side for steak - I add way more garlic - a whole head of roasted garlic (more than one clove required if it's gonna have garlic in the name!): http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Potato-Gratin-with-Goat-Cheese-and-Garlic-104727 (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Potato-Gratin-with-Goat-Cheese-and-Garlic-104727)

I use the biscuits from this one - they are awesome: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Strawberry-Shortcakes-with-Brown-Sugar-Biscuits-and-White-Chocolate-Cream-234747 (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Strawberry-Shortcakes-with-Brown-Sugar-Biscuits-and-White-Chocolate-Cream-234747) with the white chocolate mousse from this one: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Strawberry-Shortcakes-with-White-Chocolate-Mousse-103286 (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Strawberry-Shortcakes-with-White-Chocolate-Mousse-103286) for a KILLER strawberry shortcake!

I make this one all the time, but I bake in a super hot oven instead of frying (now I feel like one of those people who post reviews that they love a recipe but then tell you ten ways they changed it!): http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Mykonos-Fillet-of-Sole-109116 (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Mykonos-Fillet-of-Sole-109116)

This was the first (and now only!) recipe I used to make Spanikopita - super yummy: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Spanakopita-107344 (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Spanakopita-107344)

These whoopie pies are amazing: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Whoopie-Pies-107615 (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Whoopie-Pies-107615)

I seem to have a lot of desserts on this list! I think it is awesome that looking at our various favorites from this one website can reflect each of our own style of cooking - neat. After talking food with you guys here, I can totally picture some of these dishes as your favorites!  :)

These two are bookmarked!  For the first time ever, I made great pork chops last week (the previous attempt ended with them cooked to 220 degrees) and discovered the amazingness of a good brine.

It's not quite as extensive but www.myrecipes.com (http://www.myrecipes.com) is also a good resource. It includes recipes from Sunset, Food & Wine, Cooking light and several other mags. I typically search out recipes that were published in food & wine or sunset. I haven't had *as* good of luck with the others- but I'm sure there are gems out there!

I made a flourless chocolate cake from epicurious this weekend.  It was heaven -

And I have a ton of recipes from old Gourmet magazines and I am sure they are online.  Also, one of their chefs was Sara Moulton who had a live cooking show on the Food Network 15 years ago or so.  She was great and would often cook using Gourmet recipes.

She was great!  I will have to look at our PBS schedule (I assume we share an affiliate).  I did read that she was working for Good Morning America or some other morning show.

I love epicurious!  This weekend I made;

I don't like chicken but need to provide more than veggies and seafood for my DH once in a while, so try to be flexible.  And this was delicious.

Lots of other recipes at home that are favorites.

Okay, just found out a Sunday dinner guest is trying to cut down on meat.  Thinking to try this but what is taco seasoning exactly?  We make tacos sometimes but with seafood usually and just season the seafood with garlic and onion etc.

Here's a recipe I've used to make my own...but you can also just use a seasoning packet from the grocery store.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Taco-Seasoning-I/ (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Taco-Seasoning-I/)

Ingredients
 1 tablespoon chili powder
 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
 1/2 teaspoon paprika
 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
 1 teaspoon sea salt
 1 teaspoon black pepper

 Directions
1. In a small bowl, mix together chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, oregano, paprika, cumin, salt and pepper. Store in an airtight container.

Also- as written the taco recipe is SPICY. You can skip the chipotle if you want it less spicy or use chipotle powder or even smoked paprika instead.

Have I shared this favorite yet? Was just reminded of it by a friend who asked for the recipe. It *is* amazing. Even the mushrooms...and I hate mushrooms. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Risotto-with-Leeks-Shiitake-Mushrooms-and-Truffles-239801 (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Risotto-with-Leeks-Shiitake-Mushrooms-and-Truffles-239801)

Thanks, RA.  We are actually chipotle in adobo fiends but do have a bigger group so I might just add double the sour cream for that amount of adobo.

What does have me worried is the lentils.  Whole foods had everything but brown (in the bulk section anyway).  French, red, green, split red, etc.  I got green.  Will that be okay?

yeah, that's what we have here too. I think they take a little longer to cook (like 45 minutes total) and they require a little more water. I usually have to add a little more water than it calls for but it's forgiving so you can check it after 30 minutes and see how it's going.
