All others welcome, too. If you’re not interested, please feel free to scroll past, sans comment. I chose GG because they, like I, have no pre-set peeps here, and I’m interested in their take…but others can comment, too. This thread intended for lighthearted banter only.
Obi Wan—continue beyond 1 season? End it here?
Golden State—all that, or all that AND a bag o chips?
Stranger Things—Eddie helps Nancy escape with his Upside Down guitar shredding? Does he escape? Any notable deaths to come this season?
Better Call Saul—Kim lives or dies? Saul sees her again in Nebraska? Whither Lalo?
Holey Moley—is there anything more compelling than competitive mini golf?
Other questions?
-
Welcome, Jivan.
Are you jive-talking?
I'd probably watch more Obi, if they brought it back. Don't know if they should.
Any team that denies the Celtics is aces high in my book!
Eddie is a riff on Eddie Van Halen, this actor is his Doppelganger. So he plays "Eruption" and destroys the upside down.
Kim lives, reunites with Saul in Nebraska, and they move to Los Angeles. End credits to Randy Newman's "I love LA"
Holey Moley make me happy. Though I haven't played miniature golf in 15 years.
-
Lolz. It’s from a book I read a while back.
Vecna just gives up in the face of a mere mortal who can play Eruption. :D
Mini golf is fabbo! Looking forward to checking out some new-to-me FL mini golf next week! Plus, pickle ball! And, maybe legit golf-golf…macro-golf? :D
-
There's a park near me with track and pickleball courts. I choose the track.
But pickleball is an emerging pastime down here!

Running is great and all, but life holds other entertainments, too!

Get yourself on a boat and do some fishing! Not!

Only if you’re gonna eat what you catch, as long as it’s a keeper!

I'm not into seafood, too much mercury.

Speaking of fish… there was some sort of concert going on when I ran thru downtown just a bit ago. Some poor-man’s-Phish-sounding band (Pfishh?) was playing to a surprisingly decent-sized crowd. On the plus side, their noodling n doodling helped dislodge that Wellerman sea shanty from my head.

There hasn't been a sweet li'l "get a room" thread in this sleepy ol' joint for a good two+ years. Dieu merci that they're back! :smokin: :tombstone: :purr: :abs2:

It's pretty grim on the other side of the wire. Can't really blame him for sneaking over here for a breath of fresh air :hah:

I opted for the charm of Connecticut traffic snarl instead of hitting your neck o the woods. I hear there’s a bar with a wackadoodle curve at its end somewhere in NY! Perhaps I’ll belly up. :D

Dieu merci
If only I knew how to post pictures! I am currently in the presence of a French bulldog. He was born jn FL, but I don’t know if he truly has Acadian/Cajun roots.

I’d love to play some of those holes, and see if I could get thru the obstacles. In my mind, I’ve figured out many of em…but the reality would prolly be ugly! :D

Derry Canal Days!
Went to Bayville Adventure Park for mini golf. There was literally no one else there, and the whole beach area was deserted. I wasn’t sure if it felt more like the setting of a SK story, or that Morissey, “Every Day is Like Sunday” song come to life.

Makes me miss Ottawa!!

I mean, everyone but Dustin moved on fully within 2 days after Eddie got Bat-tacked…
This dude had the sitch fully under control. He preemptively wore his flame-retardant suit!

What’s with so many characters in SK books dancing jigs?
Every time I read a SK book I think, “I’m not going to read any more books by him; they’re all trash.” Then I get sucked in every couple years or so…

Shucking and shambling!
The Talisman isn't great writing, but it's somewhat entertaining.

Boogying along to some juke-joint jive!
I refuse to quit reading it, I’m down to like 300 phone-screen-sized pages…I should be able to finish it by sometime tomorrow. I’m like Jack wanting to be done but going on with the quest anyway. In the Territories, my Twinner is laboring over a forever-unrolling scroll.

What was the last SK book you throughly liked?
I think Talisman is uneven, there are parts that are good and parts that are tedious.
-
The only SK book I ever really liked was The Green Mile. Which kind of makes me wonder if he even wrote it. :P

I dunno that I’ve truly *liked* his writing since I was an adolescent. The Institute was ok, but some of his turns of phrase irritated me.
His stories can be fantastic—Stand By Me and Shawshank Redemption are both strong stories. Will I watch the Duffer Bros’ take on The Talisman? Probably.

The Shining is the height of SK for me.
A few years ago, I went back and reread Salem's Lot and discovered it was actually awful. Oddly, that was the first SK book I ever read. But I think I was 13, much different this time around.

Again, though…are you thinking movie? When I reread it, I found the obligatory Mystical Old Black Dude really… out of step with the times.
Perhaps it was the time when I grew up, maybe it was a sheltered upbringing, but as a kid, I think I thought his characters spoke in, I don’t know, sophisticated (?) ways. Like, no 12-year-old has ever spoken like Jack from The Talisman. But when I was a precocious, insufferable 12-year-old, maybe I thought it’d be cool if 12-year-olds did talk like that.
-
In other news…there’s a new Holey Moley I haven’t seen! But it’ll have to wait til I can access on demand on da road. Psych is at a somewhat tense point, and family consensus is to watch a Psych tonight.

Not the movie, though I did like the Kubrick film.
The Shining Novel. Dick Halloran was so bad that he was a Jar Jar Binks stereotype. But the rest of the book was good.
Jack in The Talisman is probably too advanced for his age. But the idea of a 12 year-old undertaking that kind of quest is out there as well.
I know you don't love horror novels, but you should try Ghost Story from Peter Straub the next time that you feel like reading that sort of book.

As the parent of a completely average 12-year-old…yup! For an exceptional 12-year-old, they’d never be able to leave their packed schedule of travel baseball/club soccer/competitive dance/chess grand mastery. If they did, they’d fall behind in their endless hustle to nowhere. Sorry, ma, gotta boogie to my practice; hope ya can drive me there and look for your talisman yourself! 23-Skidoo!
-
Currently just started “The School for Good Mothers,” which is a horror story of a sort. But without suppurating wounds from which biting worms emerge.

This was 1981. Even advanced kids didn't have schedules that packed. That's a new trend thanks to anal retentive parents.

There's a lot of things in The Talisman, like the Oatley Tap Room, that seem more like 1951 than 1981.

It's a place where you bring a roll of quarters to feed into the jukebox as you drink one martini after another. You belly up to the bar and say howdy dooski.

You’re drinkin martinis in a place like that, you’ll get your ass kicked halfway to Bethlehem and hope to god you can jig your way back from the Micmac burial ground. Know what I mean, jellybean? You hip to the jive, chum?

No radial, but I must be in the Blasted slangs. As soon as I stepped out of the car, I smelled a paper mill. There’s no other smell on earth like “mill.” My kid was skeptical, but I confirmed with hotel staff: there is a paper mill in this town. Suppurating wounds and biting worms, here I come! :D

In the land o wild-ass birds! Ibises taking over. Wood storks glaring balefully. Kites seeming to love the thunderstorms air. Limpkins just quietly stalking…plotting to overthrow the ibises.

I’ve been seein ‘em! If you’ve never watched a herd o ibis rumble around and pluck worms from a golf course, or looked a wood stork in its baleful eye, do you even live in FL? :D
My mom described watching limpkin bash snails on rocks and pull the escargot from the shells (and she has some snail shells from the lakes here—they’re almost baseball size!!!). It’s like that scene in The Talisman when Jack watched the gull eat a clam. :D

This’ll be my next painting—a bird take on the classic “dogs playing poker.” I’m thinking scarlet macaw, great auk, emperor penguin, ivory billed woodpecker, kiwi, flamingo, emu.
