First year since 1990 that an African didn't win on either side.

Kawabunga passed all the women except Desi.

Slowest winning time since 1976 for the men (the inferno year) and 1978 for the women.

More oddities coming soon!.....

DESSSSSSS!!!!!  There's no other woman I'd rather see take it all down.  GOGOGO!!!

Plus, being an awesome friend & team mate she waited for Shalane, then paced her back up

@germanotes:
'Boston Marathon champ Linden tells NBC: in early miles she felt miserable, so she told US teammate Flanagan, "If there's anything I can do to help you out let me know because I might drop out." Helped with bathroom break, then rebounded for the win.'

I set my dvr to record the race.  So, I went downstairs and did a workout on my rowing machine.  After the shower, I started watching the race and fast forwarding through the commercials.  Des was in second place and having seen her run before, I thought she might be able to close.  Just then, my cable went out.  So, I picked up my ipad and hit the marathon icon.  Of course, all I got was a message that you could watch the marathon on Monday.  By the time I got the race, Desi had an insurmountable lead.  So, the dvr is set to record a replay, so I can get to see Desi take the lead.

3:20 for Rochey. No idea what she'd be hoping for on a calm and temperate day, but survival may have been everyone's mode for today.

In the top 10 Men and Women

2 Kenyans
2 Canadians
2 Japanese
1 Nederlander
13 Americans

I think the key to rid the running world of those speedsters from Africa would be to move Patriots Day to mid-January. :D

More oddities coming soon!.....

https://deadspin.com/the-boston-marathon-had-two-shocking-winners-1825293545

He’s a government employee in Japan who doesn’t run professionally and has a full-time job.
This was at least his 71st competitive marathon since the beginning of 2012—averaging just under one a month. Overall, he’s run in at least 81 marathons.
He’s run 26 of them faster than 2:12 and 79 of them under 2:20. Both of those numbers are world records.
In January, Kawauchi ran a 2:18:59 marathon in Marshfield, Massachusetts in one-degree weather. He was the only finisher.
That race gave him the most marathons ever run under 2:20; he finished two more between then and Boston. (Obviously he was the only one of his competitors to have already run a marathon this year. Today was his fourth of 2018.)
The NYPD mysteriously clipped him in the 2014 New York City Marathon.
Today in Boston he beat defending world and Boston champion Geoffrey Kirui, and defending Chicago champion and all-around stud Galen Rupp. No one finished within two minutes of him.

Per letsrun...

Quote
The crazy part is not a single one of the 8 elite Ethiopians finished, and only 2 of the 11 elite Kenyans finished (Kirui and Edna Kiplagat)

Also per letsrun....
