***Boston Marathon 2016***
« on: April 17, 2016, 08:45:51 PM »
Welcome once again to the 100somethingth Hopkinton Marathon!!! Weather looks to be on the warm side, but not unreasonable.  It appears that this year's race is serving as Ethiopia's Olympic Trials, so expect a fairly well-stacked field with some solid times.  History has proven that experience with the course is a big plus, so there's no reason for Lelisa Desisa with his 2 wins combined with his 2:04 speed to not be considered the favorite.  Same story on the women's side as three sub 2:20 speed demons are in the field, including reigning olympic gold medalist Tiki Gelana.  Last year's winner Caroline Rotich is back to defend as well.  It's anybody's game!

Perhaps you were hoping for another American to make a deep run?

Considering the top tier Americans are somewhere in between winding down from their own Trials and gearing up again for the Olympics, there's not exactly a formidable representation on the elite side tomorrow, with due apologies to Ian Burrell and Sarah Crouch.

Nothing like fast black folk and tragedy porn galore to kick off a week! Who else is running?  Give me some bib numbers to follow.

Anyone from this board running?  I have decided that I will never do Boston again, after 9 finishes.  I don't like to run in crowds.

Solid 2:35:00 debut for Neeley Spence Gracey, daughter of a US Olympian. Had indicated a goal of sub 2:30 but it did not appear to be a good day for such a time as only one woman ran that and only four men went under 2:15.

Here's Eco Ellen looking great (as usual) at Mile 17, where I was manning the clock.

Not a surprise to see the Ethiopian dominance, considering the implications of the race for them....which also translated to a lot of dicking around in the first half and slow times as a result. When was the last time 2:21 for the men was good for top 10?   I was a little surprised to see Desisa dispatched so easily at the end, but such is life.  Kudos to the gal in yellow who came up out of nowhere in the closing miles and took off like a bat out of hell to take it down!

Solid 2:35:00 debut for Neeley Spence Gracey, daughter of a US Olympian.

Her "kick" was incredible.  She looked at the timer and wanted to run under 2:35.  The announcer said, she's "knee lifting".  Her form was perfect and she looked more like a sprinter than a marathoner.

That was a legit finish!  I was wondering where that came from, then saw the clock and figured it out.

Funny how some years everyone shows up to the finish line completely trashed, but this year the winners and many of the leaders were trotting around looking like they wanted to turn around and do it again.  Must've been the slow first half?
