Another try at a 10k time trial. Another failure.
Hit the track at 6:30am. Thermometer said 50 degrees.
There was the usual swarm of mosquitoes,
and a deer was sleeping by the side of the trail as I walked out.
It didn't bother to get up and watched as I walked by about 10 feet from it.
Stretch and warm up. Toe the line and off I go.
First lap in 1:55. In the previous tries I went out in 1:52 or 53
so I tried to keep the pace more steady and was happy with 55.
1:59, 1:59. 1:57. for 7:54 mid. Right on target.
But the damn sun is blazing and I am starting to heat up.
Another 7:54 mid. Perfect, except I am getting hot.
During mile 3 a custodian came out and started to set up
hoses to run the sprinklers on the field.
I just lost my gumption.
Kicked a little for the last couple of laps
and cut it short at 5k in about 24:20.
I got home and the thermometer in the shade said 53 degrees. Baloney.
Another good 5k, but not what I wanted.
