Dosas and Poha
« on: June 27, 2014, 08:41:13 AM »
So I am attempting to make dosas for the first time today. I soaked the lentils (i bought brown instead of black....) and the rice and poha last night. I ground it all up and the batter is fermenting (hopefully) and i will attempt to make them tonight. Anyone have any experience making them?

And Poha. I did an emergency house call for one of my patient's when her husband threw his back out (they live 5 minutes from me) and she is Indian and was making a delicious Poha breakfast (it is like a flaked rice?) and it was soooooooo tasty. I have never found poha in the regular big markets, not even Wegmans, but since i wanted to make the dosas, i made a special trip before work yesterday to an Indian market and bought some. But i forget how she made it. I may just email her and ask, though it was over a year ago i last saw her, LOL.

I was a little intimidated of going into the Indian store, that they would turn their noses up to me, but they were sooooo nice and i even asked some questions about picking out the right poha and they were very nice to me. And it smelled sooooooooooooooooooo good in there.

So I was happy! It took a little tweaking to get the batter in the right consistancy to get thin enough, but I figured it out. Filled it with a curry of chickpeas, potatoes, onions, peas and a little tomato. Yum!

I was really really happy with how it turned out. I did not have fenugreek seeds ( i thought i did but i had cumin and fennel seeds) and it was tasty anyways. I definitely want to make it again. My batter started off too thick and i think that was the problem. It was about trial and error finding the right consistency of the batter and the right temp to the pan. DD liked the dosa part, ate some of the filling as well then cried it was too spicy  :eyeroll: she just wanted to eat ice cream as we make coconut milk ice cream in the ice cream maker yesterday.

I may email my former patient and ask her about how she made her poha. I saw lots of recipes on line but would like to get her method.

This is the dosa recipe i based this on  http://www.veganricha.com/2012/04/dosa-lentil-and-rice-crepes-vegan.html i kinda just winged the filling on my own.
I also did not drizzle oil all over it.

I made the dosas for the second time and they were AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! i think getting the batter consistancy and pan temperature perfect are key. Yum.

Oh man. I love potato dosa. We go to a vegetarian Indian restaraunt here quite a bit. Dosas are like an appetizer for them, but I eat that as my main meal. So good.
