How far have you run w/out water
« on: July 02, 2015, 03:16:45 PM »
I went out for a 4-6 mile jog this a.m. that ended up being a 11.5 miles.

It was so nice, I didn't want to stop.  But, I neglected to bring a water bottle w/me and didn't have immediate access to water.
I was fine.

18 miles or so, but that was in cold weather. On a hot day, then perhaps not more than 10 or 11.

I am perpetually thirsty.  And I cough for reasons unknown (mainly being allergic to everything outside).  I carry water to run a mile.  If I don't, that will be the time that I start coughing and cannot stop.

I always have water if I'm out more than 45 minutes. I process slowly, so it's better to have a little splash every so often than trying to catch up all and once.

About 16K in probably cold weather when the water fountains are shut off around here.

I aim to never run longer than 7 miles without drinking.  Of course I've violated that rule many times.  But not without consequences.

Around 10-11 miles, chugging 24-36 oz. beforehand. Once I get to 12 miles, I figure out how to get water (I refuse to carry my own).

it really depends on the temperatures out there.  You can do without water in 50 degree weather much longer than in 72 degrees.

I always plan routes where I can make water stops, if I don;t carry water.  (Library, town hall, water fountain, golf course, ...)

Probably 10-12 in cooler weather.  It's doable, but I feel SO much better if I drink early & often.

In warm weather, I never ran more than 15 miles.  Those runs were without water, although I drank copiously afterwards.  My 20 mile runs were all in cool weather.

Back before the day of water bottle carriers many 18-20 milers, including backroads runs at 9000 feet. Don't think I ever went over 20. One summer every other Wednesday we'd run 18 from Hahn's Peak (north of Steamboat Springs) to a resort on part of what is now the Steamboat Marathon course. We'd bring a couple of dollars and go to the hot tub, drink beer, and our friends would drive us back after having more beer and dinner at the resort.

Less fun was running with my crazy college teammate in Madison during the hottest summer on record. He insisted that back to back 20 milers every weekend was the best way to train for a marathon and generally refused to stop for water during a run. Add to that, invariably on the 2nd 20 miler he'd drop the pace to sub 6s for the last 5-6 miles even though it would be 90s by then.

I'd guess about 10 in cooler weather. Maybe 8 in warmer temps once or twice.
