How do I train for an uphill mile race?
« on: August 12, 2016, 07:12:37 AM »
Later in the month I have the last race in a 3 race mile series. The first two were flat, one on a track and one on the asphalt. The last one is on asphalt but has a 650' elevation change up a hill people call "Giant's Despair." So how do you get yourself ready for anything more than survival?

Lots of hill repeats?

Are you close enough to this hill that you could train on it?  If so, then just do some aerobic rhythm runs on it a few times a week.  Nothing extreme though!

No, never even seen it. People I've told about the race that know the hill just look at me like I'm crazy. Plenty of hills here though. Hill repeats it is! woo haha

Might want to give compressions socks a go to help with the shin pounding and vibrations on the downhills.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

There is no downhill, it's all up. I have often considered those socks, do they actually work?

I would say to do uphill training and repeats:  run the uphills fast, walk downhill (if you need to) and then run uphill again.
I ran an 8-mile uphill race and trained on our local 6 mile uphill road that was not as steep, but that is all I had.

This.  Hill repeats aren't as good, since you have to keep running downhill.
