Title: **Boston Marathon 2018**
Post by: nadra's babydaddy on April 15, 2018, 03:30:49 PM
Despite the near guarantee of slower times, there's something appealing about the "suck it, bitches!" from mother nature years.  It's a great way to level the playing field and with the caliber of white folk entered on both sides, means that the Americans have as good a shot as anybody!  Can't wait to see what kind of bizarre outfit Salazar has Rupp compete in.

Who else is running (or at least 'participating')?  Give me bib numbers and goals!

ETA:

Ro Chi Minh - 11473
Arrojo - 28300
Ellen - 25788

GOGOGO!!!

Tomorrow is survival mode for me.  I've been working to get back to Boston for so long that at this point, given the weather, I just want to finish.  I'm super curious about what the elites wear in this shit.  I'm also a little optimistic that it hasn't started raining yet, at least out here in Arlington.

I'm 11473

28300.

My last Boston Marathon; Iíll be slow.  My goal is to run as well as I can, finish strong and smile at the end.  Iíve been through all the stages of grief with this forecasted heavy rain and heavy headwinds; denial (BS itís not gonna rain), anger (how could this happen after all my hard training??!), grief (waaaaah!) to acceptance.

Bring it on. Iíve run in below zero temps, ice, snow. What doesnít kill us makes us stronger. Yeah, itís gonna suck but thereís beer at the finish line. And itís gonna be badass.

Pretty slim pickins for streaming options this year.  The BAA site doesn't seem to be doing one, so it's pretty much impossible to get at work without a cable provider login, which I have no idea off the top of my head.  Currently watching on a youtube stream of some dude's TV in spanish  :P

Slowest winning time since 1976 for the men (the inferno year) and 1978 for the women.

I set my dvr to record the race.  So, I went downstairs and did a workout on my rowing machine.  After the shower, I started watching the race and fast forwarding through the commercials.  Des was in second place and having seen her run before, I thought she might be able to close.  Just then, my cable went out.  So, I picked up my ipad and hit the marathon icon.  Of course, all I got was a message that you could watch the marathon on Monday.  By the time I got the race, Desi had an insurmountable lead.  So, the dvr is set to record a replay, so I can get to see Desi take the lead.

In the top 10 Men and Women

2 Kenyans
2 Canadians
2 Japanese
1 Nederlander
13 Americans

I think the key to rid the running world of those speedsters from Africa would be to move Patriots Day to mid-January. :D

More oddities coming soon!.....

https://deadspin.com/the-boston-marathon-had-two-shocking-winners-1825293545

Heís a government employee in Japan who doesnít run professionally and has a full-time job.
This was at least his 71st competitive marathon since the beginning of 2012óaveraging just under one a month. Overall, heís run in at least 81 marathons.
Heís run 26 of them faster than 2:12 and 79 of them under 2:20. Both of those numbers are world records.
In January, Kawauchi ran a 2:18:59 marathon in Marshfield, Massachusetts in one-degree weather. He was the only finisher.
That race gave him the most marathons ever run under 2:20; he finished two more between then and Boston. (Obviously he was the only one of his competitors to have already run a marathon this year. Today was his fourth of 2018.)
The NYPD mysteriously clipped him in the 2014 New York City Marathon.
Today in Boston he beat defending world and Boston champion Geoffrey Kirui, and defending Chicago champion and all-around stud Galen Rupp. No one finished within two minutes of him.

I can’t believe how awful it was out there.. we saw some scary sights.. runners looking catatonic.. we were a mile 24...

Also, not an easy day to spectate.. walked over 14,000 steps in wet soggy hiking boots and my knee is sore..

My daughter is pleased enough with her race but says the whole experience was the highest or highs and the lowest of lows.. she badly positive split and almost everyone I checked did too.. she negative split her last two races before that.. she feels like the weather psyched her out and she also made the virgin Boston mistake of going out too fast.. although I don’t think that would have mattered today..
Mad props to anyone who persevered today

That seems how everyone's race was... all the results I looked at had really slow miles for the last two miles..my daughter said she really wanted to quit at the half and pictures friends took of her at mile 16 did not look good... congrats on your awesome race! Watching the playback on DVR.

I was talking to a girl at the gym about logistics for the upcoming Broad Street Run while watching and I was reminded that the last time I did that race [2016], it was in conditions almost as bad as they ran up in Boston yesterday, but far less severe [TV clearly didn't do it justice]*

That race is only ten miles; I can't imagine what 26.2 would have been like = certainly a Sufferfest

Again, well done to everyone, and I hope you have all rehydrated, refueled, rested and defrosted today

It's already halfway written for you!

Jeez, those last few miles were like the bermuda triangle.  Even on the elite side I've never seen implosions like that.  Kirui had a 90 second lead on the crazy little asian after 35k, then ended up 2 1/2 minutes back.   Virtually the entire chase pack on both sides dropped out after the final glimpse of them.  Lead man caught all the women except desi (that was the main suspenseful part at the end to see if he could pull it off  :P  ).   Sarah Sellers (Utah native!) didn't even realize she was second until someone told her and then still didn't believe them  :hah:

Second place male caught Shalane a few yards before the finish

Did I hear correctly that this was only her second marathon EVER?

I was talking to a girl at the gym about logistics for the upcoming Broad Street Run while watching and I was reminded that the last time I did that race [2016], it was in conditions much like they ran up in Boston yesterday

That race is only ten miles; I can't imagine what 26.2 would have been like = certainly a Sufferfest

Again, well done to everyone, and I hope you have all rehydrated, refueled, rested and defrosted today

Yeah it was exactly the same!!! Except for the 30 degree temps and howling winds in your face

Plus, being an awesome friend & teammate, she waited for Shalane, then paced her back up

https://deadspin.com/shalane-flanagan-takes-13-second-bathroom-break-in-the-1825291930

It didn't occur to me until watching the replay last night, that Des & Shalane AREN'T teammates, really, except in a Team USA kinda way

Des runs for Brooks and is coached by the Hansons; Shalane is NIKE/Schumacher

Derek is digging into the 2018 finishers' data

Quote
The below data is based on the preliminary results of The 2018 Boston Marathon. The conditions were miserable. The wind was strong and the rain/sleet was challenging. Last year was a scorcher. The results were surprisingly similar for those that finished.

https://www.marathoninvestigation.com/2018/04/2018-boston-marathon-first-look-data.html (https://www.marathoninvestigation.com/2018/04/2018-boston-marathon-first-look-data.html)

And look at this ...

Quote
Relative to their qualifying times, Women performed better in Boston in 2018 as well as in 2017.

I guess that means [and feel free to correct me] that although both men and women BOTH suffered in 2017 [heat] and 2018 [wind, rain, snow, etc], the women sucked it up and were more badass than the men under the conditions, and didn't slip as far from their BQs

No surprise there; sorry, dudes

Now THIS takes balls!!!

Every year I see bib copying, bib forging, and Iíve seen runners using their previous yearís bib to get onto the course. This is partially possible due to the unchanged design of the Boston Marathon bib over the past few years.

In the age of Photoshop and all the technology, one apparent bandit went decidedly retro:

Itís one thing to be able to slip onto the course without a bib or with a well done forgery. But this guy was wearing a bib from 1996! It turns out that the BAA did change the bib design over the past 22 years.

Not only did he run the race, but was given a medal and took the finisher photo to commemorate the occasion.

If it's too wrinkly, just scan it into Photoshop, edit the wrinkles out, and re-print it

Interesting article.

Why Men Quit and Women Donít (http://"https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/20/opinion/boston-marathon-women-nurse.html")

"The results for Boston, one of the most competitive marathons in the world, were doleful this year: The winning times for both men and women were the slowest since the 1970s, and the midrace dropout rate was up 50 percent overall from last year.

But finishing rates varied significantly by gender. For men, the dropout rate was up almost 80 percent from 2017; for women, it was up only about 12 percent. Overall, 5 percent of men dropped out, versus just 3.8 percent of women. The trend was true at the elite level, too."

It wasnít enough he decided to selfishly stop right on the finish line, somehow completely oblivious to the runner that was finishing right off his hip and proceeded to slammed her while extending his arms for a finish line pose.
After she ran by, he repeated the pose before heading off to collect his medal. He did not bother to check on the runner that he just hit.

It should go without saying. But be aware of your surroundings. Save your posing until after you cross the finish line. And above all, make sure you donít impede or slug another runner.

Thatís Mike Rossi-level douchebaggery

Much ado about nothing.

1) 90% of those idiots were in a state of delirium
2) she was tailgating (though I guess he did sort of cut her off)
3) it WAS after the finish line
4) He may well have said sorry, but you can't tell from the video.

Poor self-awareness, but not exceptionally douchey.  Still outside Moonwalking Allison's league.

Good points

Re-watching the video, he had his arms up long before the Finish Line, and she was right behind him, then - as he came up to the line - he put his arms down, then up AGAIN, which is when he smacked her, then put them up a THIRD time for another retake

Also he was far from alone in exaggerated finishing gestures if the person in the puke green on the far right who finished just after him is any indication.  He just had the more unfortunate timing.  And at least neither of them crossed the line with 7 kids spread out along the length of the road, which I believe was one of Moonwalking Allison's crimes.
