Post here about your Turkey Day preparations
who's making green bean casserole? :d
-
No green bean casserole in this house!
Roasted turkey
Cranberry salad
Butternut squash with pomegranate seeds
Roasted brussels sprouts
Dressing
Pumpkin pie and something else
Cheese and crackers, hummus, veggies, etc to snack on
Sparkling wine and wine

This pie. It's ridiculous: http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/Chocolate-Cream-Pie (http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/Chocolate-Cream-Pie)

I'm making this today for our TD dessert:
http://www.odelicesdemyriam.com/archives/2014/01/11/28912030.html (http://www.odelicesdemyriam.com/archives/2014/01/11/28912030.html)
The recipe is in French, but using google translate makes it very easy to follow. I've made the kind with only the frangipane, but this one has creme patisserie layer in it. Should be really good!
DD is making pumpkin pie tomorrow. DS is making macaroni and cheese (unplanned in my original menu but it's always welcomed when the kids volunteer to make something they like).
I'm oil p-aching turkey breast instead of duck. I have a hard time finding duck breast in our area.
I have some last minute items I need to take to Bmore tomorrow and don't want to have to buy them there.
My shopping list:
Wine (white/red/bubbly)
Prime rib (5 lbs)
macaroni pasta
half and half/milk
gruyere for mac/cheese
-
Antipasti and cheese for appetizers
Turkey with a shallot mushroom gravy
Stuffing without raisins
Roasted root vegetable salad
Steamed green beans with sweet onion vinaigrette
Parmesan mashed potatoes (I didn't want to do mashed, but apparently Thanksgiving would fall apart without them)
Homemade dinner rolls
Persimmon pumpkin pie
Chocolate espresso cookies (my friend is bringing those)
Fruit and cheese
Plus, all the wine and Prosecco my guests can drink.
*burp*

I'm making green bean casserole. But it's an Alton brown recipe. Not the one from the side of the french's fried onion box.
I did do that last year. It was my first time ever making it and DH really wanted it. I thought the recipe on the side of the box would be good since so many people use it. Uh, no. It was so yuck and I had to cook it for so long until the beans were actually cooked. So of course I was shocked when there was none left at the end of the meal. Insure didn't eat any of it. I told DH we need to always invite those same people. If they like that green bean casserole then they will like anything!

MG, this one is really good too: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/emerilized-green-bean-casserole-recipe.html (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/emerilized-green-bean-casserole-recipe.html)

It's just going to be kenyan and I, and neither of us are big into turkey dinner. However, there must be leftover turkey sandwiches on homemade rolls! I am making:
Roasted turkey breast
Mashed potatoes
Rolls
Some kind of roasted veggies, maybe carrots and broccoli. Haven't decided yet.
Corn for kenyan
I'm making a chocolate cream pie and a blueberry pie for my family get-together on Friday, so I'll probably increase each recipe just a bit and make a single serving of each for Thursday. It would be so much easier if kenyan and I liked the same kind of pie.
-
roast duck with stone fruit and onion jam (i have been unable to find commercially produced, and so i am making my own)
roast beets, parsnips, potatoes, carrots
arugula, parm, lemon salad
mushroom and leek dressing
maple pecan tarts/slab pie
dutch (or amish, still deciding) apple pie
malbec, garnacha, bourbon

We aren't going anywhere for thanksgiving this year. I am a bit sad about it actually. So deciding what to make for dinner if anything at all. The only other time I have not seen my family on Thanksgiving i had friends over...all of those friends have plans this year. so sad for me. There will only be 2.5 of us so making a turkey is just too much food, unless we can find a dwarf turkey (I like dark meat, so not making only a breast.)
Thinking about making sirloin steak. Yum. or maybe a lasagna.
-
I'm a little sad that there will be no dark meat for me since I'm just making a breast. I'm taking some rolls to my coworker, maybe she'll give me some leftover dark meat since her family are not big turkey fans.

DH doesn't care for turkey so I just do whole chickens. I used to do just a turkey breast because he will eat that, but they don't have just the breast here. It's all or nothing.

We're going to a friend's house, which is a blessing since I'm not up for the planning (I usually enjoy throwing TDay dinner)
I'm making:
spiced nuts
haricot vert
mashed potatoes (have to figure out a way to make them that won't be awful for reheating)
pumpkin cheesecake
-
:sigh:
we are supposed to go to VA but may get a snow storm, so i am undecided what to do.

Pioneer Woman has a recipe for mashed potatoes that has you reheat them in the oven. If I were doing it I would just make them the morning of and stick them in the crock pot to keep them warm, but I guess that depends on how far in advance you want to make them and how far away your friends live.

I have made them for the last several years 2 days ahead and they're amazing the day of. Still creamy and just what you would expect if you made them day of.
In addition to those potatoes I'm making:
Roast Turkey
Cauliflower Gratin (Ina Gartens recipe)
Roasted Brussel Sprouts
Kale & Pomegranate seed salad w/ a lemon vinaigrette. It also has goat cheese, avocado and chopped pecans.
Gravy
I have my Mom making stuffing. MIL making cranberry sauce. Sister in charge of pies.
-
Roast turkey, haven't decided yet how to spiffy it up a bit. Thinking garlic.
Proscuitto wrapped asparagus
Cremini mushroom kabobs
Mashed cauliflower
Coconut milk homemade Cherry Garcia.
-
lowfat mashed potatoes. perfect!
-
Ok, forecast says anything from rain/1-3 inches of snow to 8-12 inches :skep: So either way, I gotta plan to cook a full meal just in case we cannot travel Thursday.
Mashed potatoes
this sweet potato salad i made last year and i think i was the only one who liked it :D Omitted nuts http://www.homesicktexan.com/2011/11/sweet-potato-salad-cranberries-and.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+HomesickTexan+%28Homesick+Texan%29 (http://www.homesicktexan.com/2011/11/sweet-potato-salad-cranberries-and.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+HomesickTexan+%28Homesick+Texan%29)
homemade green bean casserole (recipe i used last year with br rice flour http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2013/11/12/recipe-green-bean-casserole-french-fried-onions/comment-page-2/#comments (http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2013/11/12/recipe-green-bean-casserole-french-fried-onions/comment-page-2/#comments))
pumpkin cranberry cake http://mjr.earthbalancenatural.com/recipe/pumpkin-cranberry-spice-cake/ (http://mjr.earthbalancenatural.com/recipe/pumpkin-cranberry-spice-cake/)
Lentil main dish, but probably butternut squash instead of sweet potatoes http://www.eatliverun.com/spicy-lentils-with-sweet-potatoes-and-kale/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+eatliverun+%28Eat,+Live,+Run%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher (http://www.eatliverun.com/spicy-lentils-with-sweet-potatoes-and-kale/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+eatliverun+%28Eat,+Live,+Run%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher)
and pumpkin truffles :D

Pretty!
-
I am making buttermilk pie (like chess pie) for both my brother's family and the boyfriend's family.
My brother wants me to make mac and cheese, so I will. I will probably also make sweet potatoes. Because I like them.
-
that's lovely!
-
My DH really wanted turkey, so we are making a turkey, mashed potatoes, rolls and green beans. We have a giant turkey for 2.5 people.
-
Lady Edith weighs in at a cool 18 lbs. and is hanging out in the refrigerator.
-
Roll dough is made, shaped, and in the freezer. Tomorrow I will let them thaw/rise and bake them just after the turkey comes out of the oven. I made and froze them because I'm giving half of them to my coworker, and it's easier and tastier to give her the dough and let her cook them when she needs them instead of trying to take them over to her tomorrow.
My mom bought a turkey that weighs more than my three year old niece. They might still be eating leftovers when we go for Christmas.
-
I am pooped. I have been cooking all day. Good thing there was a snow storm and i cancelled work! LOL.
So far I have made:
2 layer pumpkin cake (frosting separate in case we travel and i will frost it there)
lentil, sweet potato, spinach dish for my main protein
green bean casserole from scratch, including frying my own onions in gluten free flour :D
sparkling cranberries (need one more toss in sugar)
sweet potato curry salad
dip and veggies all prepped and bag for transport
I think that is it. I forget, too much to remember. :D
-
I have to go to WalMart because Target does not carry the normal sized pie crust in the foil tin, only the deep dish. I want the option of leaving leftover pie instead of taking it home, or I'd use the roll out crust.
-
Just bumping to say that the turkey kind of sucked, but my rolls kicked ass and the sweet potato casserole I decided to make at the last minute was awesome.
-
Of course I made my semi famous stuffing! !!
Turkey
Gravy
Cheesy potato casserole
Mashed potatoes
Green beans
Appple pie
Pumpkin pie
Homemade whipped cream
Rolls
All made by me and my youngest daughter. Just me and the kids. Kinda sad but ok I guess.
-
We are eating today. We have friends coming in from Riyadh for the weekend so we wanted to wait for them. Plus DH worked Thursday and Adam had school.
I made:
2 roasted chickens
Sweet potato casserole (half with marshmallow topping and half with pecan)
Dressing
Cornbread
Green bean casserole using Alton brown's recipe
Macaroni and cheese
Cranberry sauce
Sweet potato pie
Pumpkin pie
Pecan pie
I bought rolls
DH's friend is frying a turkey for us. I had to wash that thing and inject it with marinade.
DH was supposed to handle the turkey but he had to take care of Sophia instead. But that was better for me. I'm tired and I need a shower. And I have to mop the floors before our friends get here!
-
My brother made turkey, and also had ham, and beef brisket (I think). He also made dressing and mashed potatoes, and had dinner rolls. My niece made some sort of apple dumplings with cream cheese. I brought sweet potatoes (with marshmallows and raisins), buttermilk pie, and macaroni and cheese. It was all good.
The boyfriend's family had a salad with beets, peers, and blue cheese, turkey, gravy, green beans, dressing, scalloped potatoes, pumpkin pie, coca-cola cake, and I'd brought buttermilk pie there too.
I might have given birth to a food baby. We went to bed really early.

My olive oil poached turkey breast, and turkey thighs came out perfectly tender and delicious. Next time, I will use regular oil instead of olive. There's no real reason to use olive oil, and it's too expensive to use. I brined the turkey with soy sauce and sugar instead of salt. The original recipe called for honey and I wasn't going to pay an arm and a leg for honey only to toss it out after the brining. I used regular sugar and it worked just fine. No one liked the fennel, and I think the cooking time could have been longer so the veggies could be done a bit softer. The carrots were fine, again it needed to be cooked longer, I think.
The other sides came out just perfect, mashed potatoes with roasted garlic was delicious, made by DD, the macaroni and cheese was just ok. I didn't bother with the veggies (green beans and squash), there was just too much food. We had stuffing with sweet potato, and green salad with miso dressing. The dessert was fantastic! Had coffee topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel along with pumpkin pie and apple pie. The family had ice cream on top of both pies and they said it's better than having whipped cream on top. I might try to have that for lunch today.
DD has gone back to her place took a lot of food with her, and DS is still here until Sunday and still have tons of food to eat! I think I'll rate our TD a success! :) Hope everybody else did too!
Now to the gym!

My hubby and grandma agreed that my apple pie was the best they'd ever tasted, but my dad said he disagreed because he thought my pecan pie is the best pie in the world. Baking a good pie is very important to me.

I made the green bean casserole from scratch today, no cream of mushroom soup. I don't ever like GBC but this was SO good. I did cheat and use french's fried onions because I couldn't do the onion topping per recipe because of the kids not staying out of the kitchen, so I imagine it will be even that much better with the homemade topping. I think there is one small spoonful of it left.
I baked and cooked everything by myself. DH helped a lot, but I had to do all of the cooking. My friend from canada came with her american husband. She thanked me for showing her a true thanksgiving meal (his mom makes a big meal every year but she's not a very good cook, apparently). That comment made it all worth it to me.

I make the GBC from scratch and it is fabulous. I had leftovers for lunch :D I fry my own onions only because i have to batter them in GF flour.
