Title: Is this crazy?
Post by: Mom of Scooby on August 01, 2014, 12:26:29 PM
Some people in my running group were meeting today at 4:00am to run 20 miles before work.. They do this a lot on Friday.. But today, two of them were meeting at 3:40 to get in 22... It's like the middle of the night!

I wouldn't do it. I am so slow I would probably never make it to work.

They circle back at 5 to meet the group who is starting at 5.. I'm on the list because they run close to my work.. but they are way too fast for me.. They are so fast that they manage to have coffee at Wegman's before they leave to shower and go to work!

Not crazy at all. Nope. I would do this and we all know I'm not crazy.

And neither am I.

Not crazy.  If you want to do it, you find a way to get it done.

I've done it, but not on a weekday. After 20+ milers I usually need a nap.

I don't know how someone could get up at 2:45 ish to run at 3:40 , run 22 miles and then go to work all day

Get yourself to bed by 8-9 and it's not all that bad.  I personally couldn't do it because I'm not a morning person and kind of a wimp when it comes to running long.  That doesn't make it crazy though.  My hat's off to those who make it work.

I would do it in an off day but not in a workday. For me it's not the hour that's prohibitive, it's not having control over the rest of my day to nap, loosen up, etc.

Nah.  20 (and up) milers are for weekends or days off.

There is no way I could do it.

I often run 20 miles before work, but at 9am :D Come 4pm I would be dead if i woke up that early. I need to be up quite a bit before motoring out the door, let alone driving somewhere on top of it.

That's impressive.
You must have some kind of special long distance mitochondria/genetics.

I've never done a 20 mile run in my life.

I've always felt the key to the 20 mile run was the afternoon nap.  Unless you're Dagwood, you can't nap at work.

Anyone that regularly runs 20 miles is already a little bit nutty.

I've done it plenty...the pain in the ass of running from 3am to 6am or so is overtaken by the feeling of being the biggest badass in the office...

This.  Doing it before the ass-crack of dawn only makes it marginally more crazy than doing it at a normal time of day.

Completely agree.  But they are probably younger, too. At our age, they will not do this anymore.

2 years ago I had to do my Sunday 20 milers at 7am and then go to work 12pm-5pm (on my feet the whole time).  It wasn't ideal but if I wanted to run the marathon, I had to do it.

I'd try running at 4am once to see how it goes, especially with friends.

not that I'm in shape to be doing that, but I would do it if I could guarantee early bed after work.  I would love the holier than thou badass feeling at work. :)

if you live in a place where it never gets below 77F until November, you're crazier to do it any other time.

Sure. Done it once that long. A few times for fewer miles, especially on nights where sleep is not to be found.

Don't know about you, but my mid-50s are far less energetic than the mid-40s. I think we both are 54.

Pretty sure they are MoS age range.

I don't think it's crazy but I 'm also not a morning person, especially not a pre-dawn person.  I save the 3AM runs for the Reach The Beach Relay.

lucky you. How many years of running have you done? I wonder if that may be a factor. They used to say you got to your peak after 10 years.

Me too.  When the heat index is 86 and the humidity is 88% at 5:30am, running at 3:40am actually sounds appealing.

that no no no was more like "please let it not be true" rather than "no it is not true." I am 50, have been running for about 12 years, have noticed some waning of energy (and especially speed) but I am praying that I won't be a total wreck in 5 years.

OK, I have been running for 27 years...  more wear and tear. A total wreck you will not be; I can hardly say I am that, but speed went down for me, as well as energy levels. And recovery takes far more time for me: After my 19-mile training run on Saturday, I felt far more tired than I ever used to feel. I need more sleep after those.

I sure as hell hope not! That's right where I am right now, and I am NOT ready to be done setting PRs. This is the second time this week I have heard the word "peak" and it has motivated me to lose the 10+ pounds I've put on this year to get back to where I was last Fall. Fuck age. Fuck peaking. Fuck that.

Honestly, getting up around 4:00 is just normal for me now.  It's taken my body a couple of years to adjust, but now I start waking up around 4:00 regardless of what time I have to actually get up.  The flip side is that by 9:00p, I'm done.  Last night I told everyone else in the house that i didn't care what time they went to bed, but I was going to sleep and to leave me alone.  I think that was around 8:40.   :D The 6-year-old came in to get "kissies" and I'm not even sure she brushed her teeth before bed.

I am a morning person so it's not the early hour that would get to me - it's running 20 miles before a full day of work.  I could do it as a one off thing, but I would fully expect to not be particularly productive that day.

I actually think that I'm way more focused after a 20 miler...I have more energy in the middle of the night, anyway, which let's face it, 3am is....a long run before work always made/makes me feel downright high...
Title: Re: Is this crazy?

I'd want to stay up to run at that time, rather than getting up that early.  I kind of hate mornings and wish I could work a later set of hours so I could sleep late every day.

But add me to Team Nap After Long Runs.  And since I normally run after work, my body tends to want to go to sleep a few hours after EVERY workout.  I ran before work a few weeks ago (only an hour) and I nearly face planted at my desk by late morning.

Agreed. I've done 20-22 milers before work numerous times, though never starting before 4:30-4:45...........slacker compared to MoS's people!
