Title: the other bananas
Post by: caribougrrl on February 19, 2014, 01:20:33 PM
I am not much of a banana fan, and very picky about ordinary bananas (too green and I writhe around grossed out by what my teeth feel like, too ripe and the texture makes me want to puke).  I don't like banana bread or other forms of cooked banana.

However, I LOVE plantain, best green but I will also eat it ripe (either way, I always cook it).

I've noticed recently that local stores have begun to carry miniature bananas and red bananas.  Anyone familiar with these enough to describe how they taste and what you do with them?

The mini ones, imo, taste just like the regular ones. Not sure i have tried the red ones. I forget. I have only had plantains fried, but they were tasty :D

I use plantain in burrito filling, boiled and mashed with sweet potato or roasted and mixed with black beans.  I also fry it, which is the most delicious way to have it.

I've recently started eating bananas after a 30 year hiatus. I don't *like* them, but I can tollerate them. I've always liked plantains. The little ones are pretty much the same as the big ones ime.

Love, love, love plantains.  Yum!

The Latin markets here sell the little bananas - they taste like the regular ones.

love plantains here, too.  My favorite is a tortilla de platanos = Spanish omelette with the very sweet, fried plantains in it served with black beans on the side.  mmmm

That sounds good.  DH does not like them, so I haven't bought them in ages. Should find a good recipe.  I think I used to fry them in a bit of oil and then add lime juice.

loooooove plantains.
The red bananas are just a bit sweeter.  I think if you hate regular bananas you probably would not like them either.

I once almost stabbed my dad's hand with my fork when he reached for the last plantain. I felt a little bad, but it was pure instinct.
