Title: Question to Vegetarians re:Thai Food
Post by: hally on September 26, 2013, 10:44:55 AM
When you eat Thai out do you specify to them that you do NOT want fish sauce to be used in your dish?

Yes, I do. Actually, I ask if the dish has fish sauce in it. I stay away from things like pad thai, where I know the sauce is pre-made and includes anchovies.

If there is no "vegetarian" menu i will, but most specify that it is vegetarian.

:o You should ask anyway. A lot of times I've found their version of "vegetarian" is not the same as mine.

I mean... I don't judge. Some people have a "don't ask/don't tell" relationship with restaurants...

I just do not ever eat out, and when we do, it is at vegan places. :) We eat out a handful of times a year.

I do this if I'm out with a group or at a wedding. I order vegetarian, but I'm not going to grill the server in front of groups of people.
If it just my DH, then I'll be more high maintenance.

I do to a certain extent. But, sometimes it backfires because if it comes out and I can taste chicken broth... I can't eat it. But, I try to select things I know will be safe. I *assume* mashed potatoes are safe, for example. But, of course, some people make them with stock.

I'm curious about the original question though... what generated the inquiry?

I like vegan restaurants... but I went to one recently and when I told the waitress I was allergic to soy she looked at me like I had three heads and I ended having to eat a plate of steamed veggies because every other dish had soy. I joked that this was probably how vegans felt in a lot of restaraunts.

LOL! The vegan restaurant we have been going to has non soy option, but those are gluten, so if you were soy free AND gluten free you would be SOL.
