Title: recipes of things that will stand up to mailing to Afghanistan
Post by: Gladys Kravitz on September 16, 2013, 08:05:47 AM
i want to send DS1 a box of homemade goodies.  but i'm having a hard time coming up with ideas of things to ship.  i don't have to worry about heat too much - where he is it isn't all that hot - although i guess it could get hot during mailing.  so maybe nothing with lots of chocolate.

so far the only thing i can come up with is peanut brittle (which he loves).  he's a big sweet eater...but if you have any ideas for something salty...that would be great too.

i'd really appreciate any ideas you might have.  from everything i've read...bars are better than cookies.  and no cake stuff - shelf life is just too short.  his first package got there in 10 days.  it says to allow anywhere from one week to several weeks for mailing.

My neighbors do care packages to the troops and as far as baked goods, it is mostly cookies and brittle.

Scones?  Do those travel well?  I think they tend to be on the dry side anyway.  Fruitcake....I mean all of the christmas jokes can't be wrong, right?  (I have been told if made properly fruit cake tastes good.)

nuts roasted in olive oil (heat oil on medium, erring slightly toward high; sautee nuts  until golden, remove immdediately and salt; you can add other seasonings he might like)

or tamari-maple roasted almonds http://www.marthastewart.com/358819/tamari-and-maple-roasted-almonds (http://www.marthastewart.com/358819/tamari-and-maple-roasted-almonds)

nainaimo bars are said to have been made especially to last on long trips http://www.themarionhousebook.com/the-best-nanaimo-bars/ (http://www.themarionhousebook.com/the-best-nanaimo-bars/)

Mom sent peanut butter cookies to my husband...his mail has been taking about three weeks to arrive lately but he said they held up well. I think she wraps them in a couple layers of ziplock bags, then foil then some tissue paper or whatever.

I've sent brownies and chocolate chip cookies when the mail was taking less than two weeks. I think if you wrap them well they should be fine...and slightly stale goodies from mom are 1,000 times better than no goodies from mom. ;)

I like caribougrrl's idea of fancy nuts cause those are probably easy to snack on while he's driving!

Rice crispy treats!

This is an awesome idea. I'm going to make some Halloween ones for my husband and his guys. With candy corn or something on top.

thanks for the ideas.  i'm going to start working on a Halloween box this weekend.  rice crispy treats will be included.

he loves fudge and i would not have thought about that.  or the nuts - which he loves as well.

so thanks!!!

his first package from me has been received - he's had notice of it being there but he's been out on missions and hasn't had a chance to get it.  so it took less than 2 weeks.  i'm sure asl the holidays approach, that time will increase.

Cookies are the perennial favorite. My mom sent me a cake once that was really good, a bit stale when I got it but it wasn't an MRE. Chocolate chips, pecans, no icing. Delicious.  Stay away from Hershey's kisses, I ended up with a bag of chocolate syrup and tinfoil.
