Title: Cottage Cheese
Post by: ecodork on July 29, 2013, 10:49:54 AM
Talk to me about cottage cheese. Somehow I've managed to go my whole life avoiding it, although not for any reason in particular. Rumor has it that cottage cheese is a good source of protein. How do you like to eat it?

right out of the tub, with a spoon

but I like it best in a small bowl, topped with sliced pickled beets

I also put it in dips... like, if I had a dip recipe using sour cream, I would put 1/2 sour cream (more likely I would use plain yogurt) and 1/2 cottage cheese

I greatly despise it mixed with fruit, but my gf sometimes mixes chopped apple, chopped walnut and chopped celery in cottage cheese for lunch.

I like it plain or in savoury cooking.  Also not a fan of fruit with it.

Plain, with salt & pepper, with a touch of cayenne, with black olives and slivered almonds, mixed with diced tomatoes, sprinkled with capers.

I don't generally mix it with fruit, I just eat it at the same time I'm eating fruit.  I do like it mixed with strawberries and a little sweetener, and topped with slivered almonds.  I also like to scoop it up with Triscuits and eat it that way, and as a topping on baked potatoes with salsa.

i eat it plain.  I don't like it with anything in it.  My mom used to eat it with a raw egg mixed in.  :vomit: (and probably not safe.)

if you start experimenting, just know that large curd and small curd do taste different (well, texturewise anyway.) One brand may be vastly different than another brand. so you may like one and not another.  and of course there is fat content. I used to be able to eat the low-fat stuff. Not any more.  I am not sure what mfgs have down with the low-fat stuff, but it tastes weird to me now. I just get the full fat stuff.

That is all i ate while pregnant! That and potatoes, lol. Friendship brand makes a whipped one which is nice on toast or bagels.  I have found non dairy recipes but hve not taken the plunge. Cottage cheese was my most favorite dairy product and very high in protein.

I prefer farmer's cheese, also by friendship.  Cottage cheese is OK, but not my favorite.

This sounds pretty good! However, if we brought a bag of Ruffles into the house I'm pretty sure it would be gone within 24 hours. And then promptly show up when I got on the scale.

DH found some interesting pasta dish that has a sauce using cottage cheese. I'm intrigued! I think he's going to make it tonight.

oooooh! cottage cheese pancakes!!!!!!

1 cup oatmeal ground in your blender/magic bullet into flour, add to that 1 cup egg whites and 1 cup cottage cheese and blend. Cook up like pancakes. So easy, very tasty. I used to eat that every day for breakfast. Very high protein.

I grew up using it in lasagna. I also like eating it plain, or with brown sugar.

My mother eats it with boiled potatoes, salt and pepper.

I like it on baked sweet potatoes.

I like it on top of a big fresh salad (I don't use salad dressing).

I like it with sliced bananas.

I love it plain or a bit of salt and pepper. Also with canned pears, grated cheddar and pepper--yum!

This thread might make me brave enough to try it; I've only ever used it in a few recipes. It's one of the few seemingly mainstream foods that icks me out!

Seriously, close your eyes, load up a ruffle, and ask yourself "How have I missed out on this salty heavenly goodness until now?"

:D

Oh, I didn't know it had a special name.  Next time I'm at the chicken place I'm going to ask for that and see what happens.  That stuff is the bomb.  :D
