Title: Sodium benzoate and Vitamin C
Post by: speedbump on March 21, 2013, 10:01:12 AM
creates benzene in your body?   :panic:  First of all, is this true?

Sodium benzoate is in most everything, right?  Easier to dump Vit C than SB?

Sort of. Probably wouldn't happen in the body but can happen to a small extent in shelf stable foods containing both ingredients.

When sodium benzoate combines with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) benzene can form, which is a known carcinogen

The levels of benzene formed are extremely small and considered to be in the safe range.
