Title: Thanksgiving - whatcha making?
Post by: Rejaneration on November 21, 2025, 07:36:58 AM
So, as mentioned in my other post, I cook a lot in November and tbh, have not given Thanksgiving much thought.  I am all cooked out!

So, we will be doing something with Chestnuts and mushrooms, pulled pork from the Traeger, stuffing, and who knows what else.
It is just 4 of us this year, 2 sons and us.  I need it to be easy peasy, so that is what it will be.

What about you?

For the first time in YEARS I am not hosting. I am pretty excited to go to someone else's house! Of course we are having a big family dinner at my house on Black Friday and are also having a small Friendsgiving here on Sunday because that's just how I roll!

I don't actually have to cook anything for Thanksgiving because DH already signed us up for two things that he likes to make (a seafood appetizer and his orange and bourbon infused cranberry sauce). And I've been asked to help my SIL (the host) make the gravy once we are there. But Eliza asked me to bring a couple other favorites so of course I'll be bringing them - mac and cheese and an onion gratin I make for the holidays.

For Friendsgiving I'm just roasting a chicken because it's only six of us, and I'm making a wild rice dish with leeks, cranberries, and corn. And my granny's creamed spinach recipe. My friends are bringing the rest.

Black Friday will be a ham and some other stuff tbd.

Sounds yummy! I'd be interested in a recipe for that spinach/artichoke/leek one.

make a creamed spinach with sautéed leeks and (canned are fine, just drain well and chop) artichokes.  plop it into a casserole and top with crushed sour cream and onion potato chips mixed with panko breadcrumbs, melted butter, and a bit of grated cheese.  bake until browned.

Awesome, thanks!. I think that could be served as an appetizer with some crusty bread, too. Mmmmm.

Also just 4 of us.  I just ordered a fresh duck and will make my usual balsamic glazed roast duck.  Sides will probably be mashed potatoes*, shredded Brussels sprouts, orange and beet salad, and a simple pumpkin pie for dessert.

We had a "Thanksgiving in August" last summer w/ DH's family in Milwaukee.  My SIL had stopped treatment for metastatic breast cancer (she died in late September) so the feast was largely for her.  It was great!  Side dishes were the feature, and one of my nephews made their family favorite: a pumpkin chiffon pie.

*I'm tempted to buy some turkey gravy from our local market.  It's pretty good.  On the other hand, there's nothing like really buttery mashed potatoes sans gravy.
