They stink and look disgusting with a mixture of horse shit, dried sweat and brown clay deeply embedded into the fabric.
They need full immersion, a little laundry detergent (or Dawn), hand scrub in the wash tub and a huge rinse.
What Asics suggests (surface washing) will not cut it.

They are never quite as pliable after a deep wash like that. Maybe a decent scrubbing with a good brush and then a quick rinse, rather than a saturating wash.

I've always washed mine in the washing machine. I don't think it wears them out any faster. You kill running shoes by running in them.
-
I can handle the sweat and clay but the additional horseshit dust ingredient calls for action.
I have 3 pair in rotation so will experiment with the oldest pair with a deep hand wash.

When mine get that bad they go in the washer. It's usually the trail shoes. Take out the liner. If they're not horribly bad I take a hose to them.

Good scrub with laundry or dish soap and a hose down is the way I go to clean running shoes.
