I am making sugar/cut out cookies soon. Any suggestions for frosting? I have used candy melts before...that is fairly easy and I don't mind the taste, but don't really want to use that.
I have a recipe for royal frosting, but not sure I want a thin frosting. Would buttercream be a good option? Is there something else I am not thinking of? I plan on coloring the frosting and maybe putting on sprinkles..no fancy art work or details (e.g...if I have a stocking...the bottom will probably be frosting covered in red sprinkles, the top part just white...or a snowflake...solid white or solid blue>) Also, if I use buttercream...how do I transport them so the cookies don't stick together?

for sugar cookies? i always use a quick buttercream. set them on racks to dry a wee bit before packing them for transport, and use wax paper to prevent sticking.

We always use buttercream. For transport you could put them in the freezer for an hour or two, then use the wax paper witchy suggested. They thaw pretty quickly so they'd be good to go by the time you get to your destination. My mom used to put cookies in the freezer to dissuade us from eating them, but the joke's on her because they're just as good frozen.

Funny, google gives me lots of recipes that aren't buttercream, but that is my favorite and quite frankly I think the easiest to make (ok, the candy melt frosting is pretty easy and tastes ok, I just like buttercream more.) Good to know the trick about freezing. Will do that after I make them, pack them up, and then freeze more (ie...I will make sure they are packed away properly) because I am probably going to make them 5 or 6 days in advance anyway.

I do, too. I literally just started calorie counting again yesterday...I think bad idea on my part....

what about egg yolk paint?
as in 1 egg yolk, food colouring, water to thin to appropriate consistency... literally paint the cookies BEFORE cooking... comes out in a bit of a stained glass effect

Interesting. I think I am going with buttercream, but I will have to try this sometime.

We did this once at my daughter's birthday party and they came out great. We left them to cool on the table and went to the movies (Shrek! the first one), and when we got back the dog had eaten them. :panic:

I didn't take any pics, but I ended up buying buttercream frosting from a local grocery store (it is actual buttercream frosting, not stuff in a can...their bakery sells it.) I dyed it, it tasted good, but the cookies were transported to work without frosting and people got to decorate their own cookies. It must have been good because there were only a few cookies left over and we had a lot of treats that day (donuts, hot chocolate, more cookies, apple cake.)
