Title: I have become known for my waffles
Post by: moroccangirl on August 15, 2016, 06:31:16 PM
Not because they taste extraordinary (they are good though, thanks to runamok).
People here are always making food for each other for various reasons. When you get back from a trip to the states, the jet lag is brutal....there is always a friend waiting at your door with a meal and groceries when you get home from the airport because that is the last thing you want to do, and there is no good take-out here. The restaurant food isn't that great in general. If you don't feel good, someone is there with a meal, sometimes friends bring food just because. My friend who always brings me food is still in the states. I was a little bummed when we got back last week because her food is so good. She gets here in a couple of days. They will arrive after midnight, so they will probably wind down and go to sleep (she has 3 kids). When I wake up, even if it's after noon, I don't really want food food, I want breakfast food. I feel like people always bring a dish of regular food, but breakfast is ALWAYS overlooked. I know some people don't eat breakfast, some people will eat cereal, or whatever. But waffles can be eaten any time of day. So, I always take waffles (I do take food food, just depends on the circumstances and timing). It's so much easier for me to take waffles because #1 I hate cooking, and #2 I can make a double batch and freeze some for us too. I do plain, cinnamon-sugar, and blueberry.  I also feel like if you don't know the person very well, they might not like your food. I hate thinking that i'm cooking a meal just for it to be thrown away, or just thrown away because it didn't get eaten. The waffles can be put in the freezer and re-heated whenever. I usually take a can of whipped cream and a bottle of syrup too in case they don't have those things at home already. Every time DH asks me if i'm taking so and so food, and I tell him i'm taking waffles, he just rolls his eyes. I don't care though. At least people will have something for breakfast! And of course the mini waffles are so cute!

**years ago I bought a waffle iron and I asked about recipes. Runamok gave me some links, and she told me to sprinkle cinnamon/sugar on top of the batter before closing the waffle iron. The cinnamon/sugar waffles are my kids' all-time favorite. If I make waffles while they are home, they will have eaten 3/4 of the batch before I can get any into the freezer. Everyone else loves these too.

**This is not a brag thread, I just feel bad for the forgotten breakfast in meal trains**

I don't think I can from Tapatalk, but I can next time I'm on my laptop, if you are ok with that.

And now I want waffles.

And I'll mail you some waffles from Saudi. They may be a little stale by the time you get them.

I used to love eggos. And we get them here in the store occasionally. But they're expensive. The kids wanted waffles one time and I didn't feel like making them. I bought them eggos and they had one bite and wouldn't touch them. I had to give the box away. They won't eat them anymore! They only want homemade.

I love the idea of sprinkling cinnamon sugar. The kids are going to love that!

They're so good. I give them a little whipped cream and that's all they need. No syrup because they're already sweet. It makes the waffle iron gross but I just clean it immediately afterwards and it's fine.

Bam!

I love this idea, by the way. I wish I were surrounded by people who brought me food, and I could bring them food. I need to live on a commune.

I just received a meal train invitation for a friend who had a baby.  And I have a barnyard waffle maker.  Maybe I should do this!

A lot of our friends live in two different "Planned residential communities" and it is such an amazing community of people. We spend a lot of time there :D

I'm going to have to experiment and come up with a whole wheat malted waffle recipe.  I'm a sucker for that damn hotel waffle maker!

I love waffles!
Don't eat em much, actually I prefer just fresh berries and sliced bananas on mine. Maple Syrup...you can just keep pouring and pouring and it just soaks up more and more.....meh

I've made frozen hashed browns in mine, I add some chopped onion to Alexa hash browns.
Lots of other things you can make in there.

I really need to try the hash browns.

When Adam became old enough for honey/syrup, we would only put honey on his waffles and pancakes. Now thats all that he and sophia will eat. They like syrup but it's kind of like a treat to them. I'm glad they love honey but it wouldn't bother me if they wanted maple syrup. I love waffles slathered with butter and aunt jemima syrup, but I only eat them like that when i'm not with my kids. :D

Ooh, the cinnamon sugar trick sounds good. I have a Belgian waffle iron, but I haven't used it since we got married because kenyan has a Red Sox waffle iron with removable plates. I miss the nooks and crannies, but this is infinitely easier to clean so that's the one I always reach for.

Seriously, if I had a bigger kitchen and $200 extra dollars, I would totally buy this! MG should buy it and make crazy pancakes to go with her sugary waffles :D

I like peanut butter on waffles. Trader Joes has good whole wheat frozen waffles in the red box. If I have them I basically eat them like toast with pb. Or on the side with some scrambled eggs and real syrup and butter.

I like raspberry jam on waffles, or waffles drowned in maple syrup and butter.

I tried the overnight waffles, disaster city. Partially my fault bc I didn't use unsalted butter, but even though I anticipated thin batter it barely made a one sided waffle in the Belgian waffle maker. I was sad, and I had doubled it for company, oh well on to the morning of waffle recipe!

I was totally going to try teh overnight waffle mix at some pt. Then I forgot about it...kind of glad I did bcz I only have a belgium waffle maker.

I prefer fake maple syrup and my girls prefer chocolate syrup (if any at all, sometimes they just dip it in apple sauce.) I tried the sugar/cinnamon trick...can't say I was overwhelmed by it. It was ok, but not great. Maybe I didn't use enough sugar/cinnamon.
