Title: Himalayan Salt Plate
Post by: Sir Real on December 30, 2014, 03:56:11 PM
I received one of these as a Christmas gift.  I tried it for the first time last night, making some shrimp and sea scallops.  They cooked quickly and perfectly.  Anyone else use one of these?

Not yet, but I got one for Christmas too.  That sucker is heavy!  As I was unwrapping the package, I was thinking, holy shit they really went all out this year!  Gold ingots!  :D

I will when I figure it out.  I think you are supposed to cook stuff on it.  Kind of like a pizza stone, but for protein.  It's supposed to impart some pink Himalayan salty goodness.  If all else fails, I'm putting mine in the back yard for the deer to lick.

I'm also trying to figure this thing out.  Like radial said, it is a similar concept to a pizza stone, except it isn't just for proteins.  You can also cook vegetables on it.  You slowly preheat the salt block to up to 500 degrees F, then just lay your food on it.  As I posted, I cooked shrimp and scallops.  I've seen recipes for beef, chicken, lamb, fish, and vegetables.  You use less salt to preseason your food than you normally would as the food leeches some of the salt from the block.  So far, I'm liking this thing.

If you do get one, I strongly suggest getting one of the racks as shown in the picture above.

I forgot to mention, you can also put the salt plate in the freezer and use it as a chilled serving plate.  It holds its temperature  for quite awhile (hot or cold).

How do you clean it?

Sorry, I didn't see this sooner.  You clean it by running it under warm water and gently scrubbing any chunks with a plastic scrubby thing, no soap.  Then let it dry for a day before putting it back into storage.
