Speaking of fish… there was some sort of concert going on when I ran thru downtown just a bit ago. Some poor-man’s-Phish-sounding band (Pfishh?) was playing to a surprisingly decent-sized crowd. On the plus side, their noodling n doodling helped dislodge that Wellerman sea shanty from my head.
There hasn't been a sweet li'l "get a room" thread in this sleepy ol' joint for a good two+ years. Dieu merci that they're back!

Went to Bayville Adventure Park for mini golf. There was literally no one else there, and the whole beach area was deserted. I wasn’t sure if it felt more like the setting of a SK story, or that Morissey, “Every Day is Like Sunday” song come to life.

What’s with so many characters in SK books dancing jigs? Every time I read a SK book I think, “I’m not going to read any more books by him; they’re all trash.” Then I get sucked in every couple years or so…

What was the last SK book you throughly liked?I think Talisman is uneven, there are parts that are good and parts that are tedious.
I dunno that I’ve truly *liked* his writing since I was an adolescent. The Institute was ok, but some of his turns of phrase irritated me.His stories can be fantastic—Stand By Me and Shawshank Redemption are both strong stories. Will I watch the Duffer Bros’ take on The Talisman? Probably.
The Shining is the height of SK for me. A few years ago, I went back and reread Salem's Lot and discovered it was actually awful. Oddly, that was the first SK book I ever read. But I think I was 13, much different this time around.
Again, though…are you thinking movie? When I reread it, I found the obligatory Mystical Old Black Dude really… out of step with the times. Perhaps it was the time when I grew up, maybe it was a sheltered upbringing, but as a kid, I think I thought his characters spoke in, I don’t know, sophisticated (?) ways. Like, no 12-year-old has ever spoken like Jack from The Talisman. But when I was a precocious, insufferable 12-year-old, maybe I thought it’d be cool if 12-year-olds did talk like that.
Not the movie, though I did like the Kubrick film.The Shining Novel. Dick Halloran was so bad that he was a Jar Jar Binks stereotype. But the rest of the book was good. Jack in The Talisman is probably too advanced for his age. But the idea of a 12 year-old undertaking that kind of quest is out there as well.I know you don't love horror novels, but you should try Ghost Story from Peter Straub the next time that you feel like reading that sort of book.

There's a lot of things in The Talisman, like the Oatley Tap Room, that seem more like 1951 than 1981.
Oatley Tap was one of the more believable/timeless settings! Clearly, you live in bougie-ville and have never not lived in some variation thereof!

I’ve been seein ‘em! If you’ve never watched a herd o ibis rumble around and pluck worms from a golf course, or looked a wood stork in its baleful eye, do you even live in FL? My mom described watching limpkin bash snails on rocks and pull the escargot from the shells (and she has some snail shells from the lakes here—they’re almost baseball size!!!). It’s like that scene in The Talisman when Jack watched the gull eat a clam.
I want to see a scarlett macaw and a great auk.
This’ll be my next painting—a bird take on the classic “dogs playing poker.” I’m thinking scarlet macaw, great auk, emperor penguin, ivory billed woodpecker, kiwi, flamingo, emu.
