Ways to carry food for potlucks
« on: February 14, 2021, 02:44:18 PM »
I’m looking for suggestions on a container for carrying food to a potluck, but also looks good. It can be any type of food; dessert, hors d’œuvres, etc. But something that won’t spill.

I usually use the glass lock and stock containers and it’s acceptable but just wondering if there are nicer options that I can order.

And I’m thinking that if I find the perfect container, then I can start thinking about the perfect food to put in/on it. :hah:

I’m probably not much help, because I’m all about function and not so much looks when I bring a dish somewhere. If it needs to stay hot I carry the casserole dish in a cooler, insulated with towels.

I do have a longaberger basket someone gave me many years ago, that is good if I need to transport a pie or other dish that is fine at room temperature.

I have a Le Crueset dish that i often transport in, it is not cast iron enamel, I got it at Costco ages ago. Or I bring in tupperware and then also bring a serving dish to display on.

I was just hoping that there was an actual product made for the purpose of bringing your food to the party, that was impervious to travel in the car or train or what-have-you, but looked good once you set it up.

Picnic baskets used to be for sale everywhere, even though people don’t picnic that much. I was hoping for that kind of specificity.  But I can’t even find a good cookbook geared to this need.

I think there are such items. But a general carry all is tough. There are casserole dishes, cake stands, etc. But you kind of need to know what you are looking for.

I would be happy with a specialized carrier, it doesn’t have to be general. I can adapt to always bringing the _____.

I used to have the Tupperware carriers for cake and pie, but they weren’t particularly attractive.

My mom used to have one. It was a glass casserole dish with a Tupperware lid. It fit into a woven basket like thing on the outside. It was really pretty and the basket meant it didn’t need much of a trivet if it was hot. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one for sale though.

This might not be as pretty as you want but would give you options.

But, also,  you could just make an appetizer that travels well and store it in tupperware and then place on a dish when you arrive.  Or use a regular appetizer caddy & plastic wrap well (cheese trays transport well this way).

Depending on how fancy you want it to be, there are glass casserole dishes and pie plates with lids. I personally have no problem serving a pie or quiche straight from the glass dish and you could also use it as a charcuterie board or for other appetizers.

I know this will sound covid-judgey, so I apologize in advance. But are there really potlucks these days? I won't even let people from different families serve themselves from the same dish.

Omg, RA, thanks for looking all this up!! I’ll check it out.

BA, I’m shopping for the future. We have a mailbox until March 15 but I anticipate not having shopping availability after that for a year or more.

This may not be of interest to anyone, but a big part of cruising is getting together for sundowners on each other’s boats, or on the beach. The etiquette is to bring munchies or sometimes they do full meals. It’s always a challenge to load dishes in the dinghy, especially if there are waves or wind or rain, so food has to be well protected. And there are other challenges, like being able to get ingredients in distant locations, and improvising with what’s available. And cooking on a boat.

We’re hoping to go to the South Pacific next year so I’m just trying to plan ahead and figure out what my go-tos will be.

Yes, my BFF's parents had a boat when we were growing up, and some of the most fun times we spent on it were when they'd get together with a few other boats and we'd have a fun dinner or party with everyone. First time I ever had alcohol was one of those get togethers! Gin and tonic.  :D

Yes!!  :D G&Ts are so popular in this crowd. I just had my first one two years ago.

I also need a signature cocktail for our boat. :p

This is probably a dumb question, but are you planning to sail your boat to the South Pacific? Or go there and get a boat? If the former, I need to hear all about this plan, because it sounds terrifying.  :e)

Sail there! The rough plan is to be in Panama by December and go through the Canal, and cross from there to the Marquesas around March. We have about three other boats that are planning the same thing, but I’m sure some will drop and others will join in throughout the year. The passage from Panama to the Marquesas is roughly 3500 miles. That is a really long passage but usually the winds are behind you so it’s reasonably comfortable, just long.

And we haven’t planned much further than that. So much can change with Covid. But we want to spend 1-3 years in the South Pacific.

I can’t wait!! We’d be there this year if Covid hadn’t happened.
