Ack.  I have no clue.

Inheritance diptych

Ack.  I have no clue.

Here is the quote from where Toc proposed the idea...I was scared at first, but the more I've thought about it, the more I am excited about giving it a try.  :)

Quote
Here's an idea for a very loose one, possibly for some time in the future, suggested by a meatspace friend of mine who's sort of following all of this:

Inheritance tracks: there's a radio show which asks a guest to do this: one track you received from your parents(' generation), one that you have passed on to the next generation.  For us, of course, this would be an image of something you'd inherited and one of something you'd passed on - concrete objects or not - posted as a diptych.

I still dont get it.

So i just take a picture of something that was handed down to me from my parents or someone?
Title: Re: Weekly Themes
Post by: bootsie on April 18, 2008, 11:47:00 AM
This is my take on it...

There will be 2 photos side by side.  One photo is something you've inherited - whether it be a physical item or maybe something else like a personality trait, use your imagination.  The other photo will be of something you will (or have) passed on.

Still clear as mud?

Of course, I could be completely wrong on this...but that's just my take on the theme.

Here's an example of a diptych photo....not mine!

Two images, one of which represents something handed down to you by the previous generation, the other of which represents something you've handed on.   No constraints on what the images contain - the nose you got from your mother and the graduation ring you gave your goddaughter, a flower because you inherited a love of gardening from your dad and your messy desk because your son has got your untidiness....

Here's some examples of diptychs from flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/diptych/).

One way of making a diptych from two images is given here (http://www.flickr.com/groups/dyptichs/discuss/21068/).  And some more advice here (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070821135109AA4xx0m).

OK, while we're discussing it, the self portrait is already giving me fits!
And so is film noir.
I have never psoted a picture of myself on the internets and probably won't start now.  I'm an introvert, remember?   :o
So can self portrait be any interpretation?

 :-\

Oh, and diptych sounds like dipstick with a lisp.   :)

I think there's only two rules to any of this:

Rule 1:  There are no rules.

Rule 2: See Rule 1.

Wannab,  I would think that any picture of any part of you would work.  Maybe even a picture of stuff that represents you would be ok.  I am sure that whatever you do will be fine.

While sitting out on my deck this afternoon I got an idea for the self portrait.
I'll have to practice to make sure it's not one of my, "well it seemed like a good idea at the time" photos.

I also had to go look up film noir.  And while I'm still stumped on what to do, at least I have a starting point in my mind.

Shoes.  Holy fun subject.

Ahhh.  I wondered if it was a technical term.  :P

It would be a good challenge for me, since I tend to only shoot vegetable or mineral, but I'll have to find an event that includes jumping people...  :-\

For the week including July 4th we should do "Summer".

Another one could be "architecture"

Money!!!

I think there should be a technique one in there, too.  Like bokeh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh) (my new vocabulary word), shallow depth of field, or canted.

So what are the rules regarding commentary and the timeline? I am looking forward to some great discussion.   :)

Also, I propose a challenge on greenery/plant life, if it hasn't already been suggested. And heat. Or cold. Or maybe just extremes. Of temperature. Or just extremes of any kind!

I really like the idea of a 'cold' challenge during the summer (is everyone here in the northern hemisphere?).  Esp. if we challenge folks to not use archived pics.

Usually we all get our reviews in within a day or so of everybody posting their pics for the theme.  I see we have already been chastised this week for being tardy!

Theme-wise, I check this thread and others for new ideas and then take some and put them in the calendar.

I like makeda's idea for doing a cold theme in summer, and challenging people not to use archived pics.

I like makeda's idea for doing a cold theme in summer, and challenging people not to use archived pics.

People are supposed to use new pics, but sometimes it gets away from them, and they use archived ones.  We always let them slide.  But, the idea is to use your camera on a regular basis to improve, and you can't do that if you're rifling through your old stuff instead of trying to see the world in a new way.

We all try to get our submissions to the thread in by Mondays.  Starting critiques on Monday evenings is pretty safe.  :)

ETA by archived I mean older than the themes presented here.  We've put the themes several weeks in advance so that if the mood strikes you to do one ahead of time, you know what the themes are for each week several weeks out.  (It's early and I hope I am making sense).

That makes sense, and jives with what I already thought about how it works with archived pics in general. For the idea of a "cold" challenge, I see that push to go with non-archived pics as a way to do more of what we did with the money thread. Exclude the obvious...no snow on the ground, icicles, frozen ponds, etc. How can we stop and think carefully about a composition & concept that says cold, when our own mind is sweating? I think it's neat to push themes that will challenge us technically, but also conceptually...push ourselves to think about the story our picture is telling and how we can deliberately create a feeling that touches particular senses, so we can feel the chill, even though that's not where we are now.

It looks like we need some more ideas for themes.  What do you guys think about:

Night
Mirror
Animal(s)
Metal
Black and White
Your favorite thing

Do we think any of these are winners?
Title: Re: Weekly Themes
Post by: cgraz on July 29, 2008, 07:33:03 PM
Those sound like they have some potential.  :)

I was trying to come up with something around the idea of mood...seeing a photo that someone described as "pure joy" made me think along those lines. I don't know whether it would work to say mood in general, or to put particular moods/feelings out there...joy, fear, creepy, funny, etc.

I think these are all usable.  cgraz, we did film noir a while back, which was all about mood.

People have mentioned techniques as a theme in the past.  What about:
bokeh
depth of field
painting with light (the way I did my glass and faucet)
single light source (like tk did his lens)
Title: Re: Weekly Themes
Post by: TK on July 29, 2008, 11:01:06 PM
Ellen, I love all of these.  What is the difference between bokeh and DoF?  I kinda though they where the same thing as long as by DoF you mean shallow DoF.

I think my favorites from these lists are:
Painting with light
Single light source
Night
Metal
and mood, but i think this one needs refining some but i am not sure how.
Title: Re: Weekly Themes
Post by: Eco Ellen on July 30, 2008, 06:46:01 AM
I believe bokeh is the focus on the blurred background (see Heavy's greenery submission).  Depth of field could be either shallow or full, but the focus has to be, and the viewer's attention should be on, the depth of field of the main subject - not the background itself.

Does that make sense?  Hell, maybe they are the same thing, but I didn't mean them that way, because I believe the focus is on something different and that should be communicated through the photo.
Title: Re: Weekly Themes
Post by: HeavyFeet on July 30, 2008, 08:57:04 AM
Bokeh coincides with a shallow depth of field.  It's the blurred out background that helps to isolate a subject in the foreground.

Different lenses produce different bokeh effects.  Basically, the shape and number of blades in the shutter have a lot to do with it...
