I'm sorry you're not feeling comfortable over there right now.  I've been off the board for the past couple of days and assume it's because of the election results, but hopefully nobody has targeted you personally?

Only one rather pointed exchange but I rally don't think it was personal. Many are very hurt right now and IMO need some time to process it. I don't think my presence has-been helpful to that.

It will be okay.

I just need the time and energy to make this a fun refuge for those who need a break from the processing.  :)

Work, exercise, getting my bees ready for winter, learning to fly (just starting out on that adventure).  Looks like no one at CHrunners was paying attention to the election?  I kid!  I don't think I can wade through all those threads, so I'll just hang out here for a while, with the occasional foray into Yammerland.

Basically, you tuck them in for a long Winter's nap.  They need enough food to last until Spring, so you make sure they have it.  If they don't have enough honey stores, you add frames from hives with more than enough or make arrangements to feed them over the Winter.  They also need to stay warm and dry.  30,000 bees clustered up in a hive generate a lot of moisture.  If it condenses on the cold ceiling of the hive and drips down on the bees, it can chill and kill them.  I built something called a "quilt box" that goes on top of the hive in place of the usual cover.  It's a ventilated  frame full of wood shavings that insulates the ceiling of the hive so it doesn't get cold enough to condense the water vapor into an icy shower.  The wood shavings soak up excess moisture and wick it out the ventilations ports.  Also, this time of year, field mice are looking for a nice cozy place to hang out.  A beehive is a perfect mouse motel once the bees cluster up and aren't defending the hive entrance.  So part of winterizing is installing a grating over the hive entrance with holes big enough to let the bees come and go but small enough to keep the rodents out.  Couple of other things, but that's most of the process

Is this your first winter with the bees?

I'm only opening non-political threads in the CH. It's been crazy over there since the election -- and not in a good way.

I caught most of Trump's interview on 60 minutes last night and it was good. I am hopeful that what he said on LGBT issues will calm a lot of people down.

Yes, first Winter with my bees.  I'm trying not to do them too much damage as I figure out this beekeeping thing.  Fortunately, they are pretty resourceful critters, so I'm hoping they'll survive any errors on my part.

I should probably do the same with the socio-political threads.  But you know me :)

You are right.  Its not.  Maybe I'm naive, but I think tone is probably the biggest factor in the success or not of a "political" or philosophical discussion and that if everyone responded in a respectful manner a good discourse could be had.  Unfortunately things seem to get emotional and immature on both sides and everything goes to hell.  :(

Well I've honestly had enough of politics for now. I was blindsided by the election results and it was tough not to be able to process that in the CH. But I'm finally getting my head wrapped around a Trump presidency. So I'm done "processing" the election.

How can we turn this place into a great blow off steam, cut loose and have a little fun place -- without stomping on anyone's toes?

DH and I have been enjoying a number of craft beers lately. It looks like I lean heavily toward pilsners -- and there's a whole lot of beer out there I have yet to explore.

I've had enough of politics, too. Or rather, I don't always personally like the tenor of discussions here (and how easily and obviously the same people get their cranks yanked again and again and again. Maybe it's closing-in-on-two-decades working with middle schoolers, but I'm baffled by people whose buttons can be so obviously pushed...some of these yammerers would be eaten alive by some of the kids I've known :D )

Beer is a weekend-only indulgence for me, but I'm very particular about what I like: the hoppier the better!

snigger.  I like a lot of beer styles, but I tend to not care for Belgian style beers.  Particularly the fruit beers, but I'm not a huge fan of Saisson's either.  I love IPA's, Bitters, Lagers, Pale Ales, ESB's, Pilsners, Hefeweizens.  I don't mind a good Radler on a hot summers day.  I can enjoy a stout too in the right conditions.  Not so bit on Cream Ales.

I am finding however that I get the worst hangovers from too much draft beer.  :(

I think I'll hang out in the Open Pub for a week or two hoping things calm down in yammering. It's going to be lonely.

This might be an unprecedented time, so the tenor might not change in a week or two, or even two more months. In other words poo will be flung far and wide for quite some time.

That said, just coming off of a long sabbatical, weren't we in mid conversation over US Cycling Pro Challenge (now defunct) when I up and left?  I just couldn't take the heat.

CTW started a thread with I just checked. The sky is not and will not be falling. His comment was not well received at all.

There is a distinct absence of political threads in the CH this morning. I think maybe a number of posters have decided to take their ball and play elsewhere.

BTW -- Welcome back. You've been missed.

The collapse of the US Cycling Pro Challenge was a surprise -- at least to me. I think the Pro sport of cycling may collapse, too. When I last checked cycling news there were articles about the corrupt practice among the Italian teams of paying to get on the team, Thomas Dekker's doping practices, Cancellara's retirement -- and hints that he may not have ridden clean even though he never tested positive. That's on top of the motors in bikes scandals of earlier this year. Even I've given up being a fan.

I need to go read your Race Event post.  :)

Ahh thanks.
There was a lot of talk last  year and this year about the US Pro Challenge, and I guess they just couldn't turn a profit even though the entire state was behind it. They are talking about bringing back a smaller scale event, probably based in Denver-Boulder only (not all around the state, and region) with races "spoking out" to outlying areas but most if not all of the finishes in the cities. Hear you as far as drugs and corruption, I don't follow cycling closely but it's there in other sports as well. I'd definitely go to some races if they had them here again.
I'll stick to running, thank you.

I think part of my problem is I don't have time to keep up with it all!  All of the accusations, the team issues, the doping, etc.  I LOVE cycling but following it is exhausting!

I don't want people to leave here. I just wanted the threads to have a different tone.

Quick update on the cycling front.

My son finished his 3rd year of club cycling for his university and they won their conference meet last year. However the season was marred by the tragic death of a cyclist from another team who crashed in a race on a treacherous downhill. That was scary.

The young woman I coached last year moved on to be with a professional cycling coach, and then she moved back east so not sure how it went this year.

I'll stick to running, thank you.

I think things are still shaking out. If they want to have a conversation that's all left all the time they will be happier elsewhere. But even if they want that the CH is still a good place with old friends and shared experiences. Maybe they'll split their time and find a happy balance between the two places -- if there even are two places. That was a total guess on my part.

I'd try, but I'm a divisive soul deserving of derision for not being part of the Fakebook machine... ;)

So that's the deal. That may be a good place for them to bond and heal.

I don't think it's a flounce. By the lack of new political threads from left leaning posters who have been up in arms about the changes from the recent election, it appears they've taken the political discussions elsewhere. Things are still working themselves out. It will take some time but I think things will be okay.

None of us liberals have flounced. We have plenty of threads and I personally have really appreciated them. But when Tom shows up and shits all over them...well I don't engage with him.
