Post by: Run Amok on January 15, 2015, 10:57:54 AM
This is so cool! I am hoping to catch one of their events while traveling one of these days:

There's a pretty big group in Philly, but they workout too late in the morning for me. I've only been to one of their workouts (day after Thanksgiving) and you have to be comfortable with a lot of hugging of sweaty strangers. A lot.

From what I have been told by friends who join them more frequently, it's become very cliquish.

I can't stand NP.

In theory, I should love it.  In theory, it should be great.  A free, welcoming, community workout group.  But the execution of it (at least in Boston) leaves much to be desired.  Many of my colleagues in the running biz agree with me.

--They take themselves so seriously.
--The self-promotion on social media is out of control.  They project an attitude of "you're not as good as us if you're not part of us."
--Very clique-y.   I've heard direct reports that newcomers are not made to feel welcome.
--The workouts are very hard and the "no man left behind!" thing is NOT felt.  New/less fit people feel left behind.
--The dumb ass hipster selfies of the founders.  Always looking at the camera like they've never seen one before.
--All the divorced guys in their 30s do it.
--Hipster bullshit, fitness style.

UGH.

New Balance severed their ties with them.

It really doesn't make sense and I'm always tentative to tell people how hard NP makes me roll my eyes, but I've found that most people I really like and respect agree with me!  :D

Christ.  Get over yourselves.

I think it's one of those things where if you're truly confident in what you do, you don't feel the need  to self-promote like crazy.

I can be a bad ass running 50 MPW on my own.  But I don't need a special spray painted t shirt and pics all over twitter.  It's just what I do.  People do what they do.

I made it one minute.

And about all that hugging they do (hugs are even incorporated into workouts), a good friend of mine used to workout with them and was really uncomfortable with the hugging. He's 50 and he didn't like the idea of "awkward extended hugs" with girls in their early 20s. And sure enough, a couple of them started referring to him as the "creepy guy." He was horrified.

Two thoughts about that video:
1) They sure think they are special for working out
2) Looks like a meat market.

I don't have any problem with people having a good time and enjoying life, but that video is so vapid and stupid.

A couple of my running club friends have worked at a particular water stop at Boston for years.  Then the NP people started volunteering at that stop, too.  Now my friends don't volunteer there anymore.
