I haven't watched an old movie this week.

JFK? The only good scene is the Joe Pesci freakout in wig.

I just watched Annie with dd.  I remember not much liking it as a kid but as a middle aged woman... So much better!  Daddy Warbucks is kind of hot.  miss Flanagan is hilarious and that was some really good acting.  Annie herself is kind of horrible but also strangely fascinating - she seemed very mature for her years (the actor, not the character)
C also loved it.

I watched The Deep(1977) neat underwater stuff, but the plot lacked logic and got silly towards the end.

We watched Blade Runner last night. I hadn't seen it in years, and had forgotten how fantastically it was shot. It is a gorgeous film.

Plus, 1982 Harrison Ford is not hard on the eyes, either.

Interesting, not especially great.

Not an old movie, but still somewhat relevant -- I saw the Blade Runner sequel in the theater last night.

Could have used a little more editing (it was super long), but also a treat for the eyes. And really great special effects.

Little Big Man. Dustin Hoffman is fairly small.

It was OK, very 70s, and the comedy weirdly juxtaposed with the darker scenes.

I watched Flight of the Phoenix last week. The 1965 version. I watched it because I read somewhere that Vince Gilligan based the BB episode "4 Days Out" on Flight of the Phoenix. It wasn't bad, but the editing was horrendous, as one scene seemed to jump abruptly to the next, and it wasn't done intentionally, to be artsy. It was just bad editing.

I saw a pirate copy of Glass online. Split is actually a bit better, James Macavoy has more screen time in Split and it was a fairly brilliant performance in that film.

So Glass isn't on Netflix, or HBO, you can watch it here.

Laptop works better than phone, not as many pop ups, don't worry about viruses, it's all hype.

My personal favorite part of M Knight Shamalamadingdong's movies is recognizing the locations around Philly

"I know where that is ... I know where that is ... so where are they?"

His cameos in his own movies are cringeworthy though.

Checked out The Long Haul as part of my snow day with my kid. I laughed, I cried. What can I say, I’ve been a fan off the Heffley family’s misadventures through all the books and the previous movies with different actors (the original Greg is probably old enough to have a family of his own by now :D ). Because this is a not-to-be missed cinematic gem, I won’t spoil the fun—will the Heffleys make it to Meemaw’s in time for her 90th birthday party? Will Greg make it to the comic con he wants to go to? Will Manny have to give up his pig?

Snow Day #2: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. If you like the OG Wimpy cast, this’ll warm your heart and inspire you to appreciate your family. I laughed, I cried. Then I went sledding. Then I helped some of the oldsters at a nearby 55+ housing shovel out their cars. I’m ready to stop movie-ing and resume real life...until Xmas break! :D

You had a busy 6 day vacay!

No movies to report. But, Man In The High Castle, season 4, is decent so far.

Have you picked up the pace, slacker?? Prolly shouldn’t have any spoilers in this thread—what if some rando stumbled on CHRunners, then found this innocent movie thread, then...had all of High Castle spoiled when they were only an episode away from the finale :panic:

The new ones have been good. Plus, although I haven’t seen that new Adam Driver movie, I’ve been all-in on the Adam Driver bandwagon for years.
But I also really liked the last Jumanji and am fully prepared to be even more touched than I was by Brittany Runs a Marathon (which yet another nonrunning coworker reccoed to me this friggin week). :D

Snow day viewing of A Christmas Story with the kid. He’d never seen it, though I wondered if a vision of 1950s Americana would be relatable to a zoomer. Turns out, tongues stuck to frozen flagpoles, overly-bundled-up children, and Santa planting a boot in a kid’s face are timeless. :D

I can't remember the last movie I went to, I walked out on the Hobbit, that was a minute ago.

I saw the Hobbit movies (well the first two).  Not good.  They felt that they needed to stretch a single book into a trilogy, so they added a whole bunch that wasn't even in the book, and dragged it out.

Watched it at home.  Don't know why I even watched the 2nd after watching the 1st.  I'm embarrassed.

I loved the Tolkien books. LOTR movies are not bad, but I saw them all at home and I was beery so I was dozing off a few times during them.

You know my feelings—I’m usually the ultimate book snob, but LotR was wildly better in movie form! The books were a snooze-fest even sans booze!

Speaking of...I read the new book adaptation of Pan’s Labyrinth with the kid, then we recently watched the movie. The movie is great, but it’s a million times better if you’ve read the book (the book layers in even more myth and magical realism and adds depth to characters).

Lolz. Regardless, these days I do all my cooking on the weekend so it’s just like roasting vegetables to go with whatever I cooked on weeknights. Over the past year (well, 8 months, more or less), a lot has changed, by my choices, in how I live my life. It’s often not easy, and I refuse to say anything is forever, but it’s good to mix stuff up. :D

I forget the channel, it plays all the 'autopsy' and 'last hours of ...' sensationalized documentaries.

I watched The Deep(1977) neat underwater stuff, but the plot lacked logic and got silly towards the end.

Peter Benchley's follow up to Jaws. Just OK.
No way could he be expected to match the success of Jaws.

Jacqueline Bisset in her hey day, and Nick Nolte just before his hot streak.
Eli Wallach, Louis Gossett Jr, and Robert Shaw gave the background some strength.

Benchley also wrote The Island.
A secret pirate society dating back to the 1700s on an uncharted island preying on boaters who happen too close.
No surprise that Michael Caine couldn't carry the film.
At about this time the movies replaced water based villains with aliens, werewolves, and boogeymen with knives and hatchets.

During this quarantine afternoon where she declared that she was bored, I introduced dd#1 to 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'.

She loved it. Generally she doesn't like much more than a few years old.

Started at the beginning with 'Dr. No'.

Well, Twilight Zone is an old show, but it passes the test. The twist at the end of each episode is often silly, but still has the ability to occasionally supreeze.

Each episode is 24 minutes long so minimal time investment, unless you binge watch.

I usually watch two or three a night.

We just started Lawrence of Arabia, but there’s no way I’m staying up late enough to see the whole thing.

That's a four hour movie, shiver me timbers.

Great main theme, it conjures images of an endless dune sea.

I still think The Unforgiven and The Outlaw Josey Wales are tied with Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid as the best westerns ever made. But I haven't seen many of the classic westerns from the 50s and 60s.

DD#2 and I just watched "Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid".  One of my favorites.  DD#2 was only half watching as she was doing homework at the time.  She said it was ok.  I told her to watch it paying attention.  Don't know if she has it in her.  Maybe.  She loved '1917'.

I have actually seen most of "Birth of a Nation" several years ago.  I had heard about it, and I guess I had to see it with my own eyes.  I guess there are things you can't unsee.  It was terrible.  Had no redeeming qualities unless you were a member of the KKK.  I suspect if the "talkies" fad take hold, this thing will fade away.

The Patriot is basically Braveheart with muskets.
We were soldiers is Braveheart with helicopters.

Interesting that you say that. I always saw that vehicle as a "big wheel" but my move-mate said "that's not a big wheel." I didn't necessarily agree, as I was unable to confirm identifying the size of the front wheel.

I watched Cop Land a few days ago. I saw it years ago. I remembered it as a good movie with a lot of credible actors in it. But on second watch, it's pretty silly.
