And FWIW I think the gingerbread type cookies would be best for the family tradition, as the dough is tastier and easier to work with than springerle.  Speculaas dough can be make weeks ahead and kept in the fridge.

I bought an antique spekulatius board on Ebay.de on Friday.  It's not museum quality, but for the money it was definitely above average...
