Ran 5.1 miles, then I mowed the lawn.

Last year I saw a turtle laying eggs in a hole on the trail,
I salvaged the eggs, incubated them for 74 days,
and 4 turtle babies hatched out.

The story is in the pet thread from last year.
http://chrunners.net/forum/index.php?topic=115784.40

I made a note in my 2018 running log when to look for more turtle eggs.
The earliest day was last monday.
I assumed that with the late winter and with an aggressive start date
that the turtles wouldn't be active until next week.

Wrong.

Head out for the usual easy run.
jogging along the trail just before the turn onto
the track, there was a turtle laying eggs.

Finished the run, turtle was still laying eggs,
ran home and got my crappy camera, came back,
still laying eggs, took a picture, walked home,
got a screw driver and plastic box.
Went back, still laying eggs, went home,
went to the store and did some shopping,
got back home, went to the trail, still laying eggs.
But the hole was filled, so I walked to the track and back,
and the turtle was about half way down the bank heading to the water.

Carefully dug up the nest, and salvaged 10 turtle eggs.
Filled the box with dirt, made sure to keep the eggs with the same side up,
put them in the box and brought them home.
I'll have to get more dirt, and then set up the eggs under a lightbulb.
On cold nights I will turn the light on to keep the eggs warm.
In about 75 days we will have babies, with any luck.

Oh, 2.5 miles easy, about 2 miles walking.

Why not leave the eggs undisturbed?

In 10 or 11 weeks the ATV traffic and maintenance vehicles will have turned the surface of the
trail into something as hard as cement. The turtles would hatch out underground and die.

Three years ago I marked the spot where a turtle had laid eggs. Two weeks past the time the
turtles should have emerged I tried to dig them up. With a screw driver I was able to
penetrate less than 1 inch down into the ground with a full swing. I would have had to get a
hammer and use the screwdriver as a chisel to get down to where the eggs were.

Easier to dig them up right away before the traffic compacts the dirt.
