Title: Ratchet
Post by: tenacious1 on July 15, 2014, 12:16:13 PM
My boys used to use this term to describe some people and it came up again recently. Anyone else ever heard this?

From the article above.
Quote
“The word is hella last year,” he says. “The ones who say it are the ones who are ratchet.”

I guess there's no reason for me to figure out what it means since it's last year's news.

DS1's job is at a cheaper hotel. He described the clientele as ratchet. I can't figure out if that's dangerous or just not stylish.

What about "sketchy"? I don't think they've changed the meaning, just put it into more common use.

I first took it as a mispronunciation of "wretched"

They don't let the wretched stay there. They have to have a credit card that will accept the charges or cash including a $50 deposit to cover damages.  ;)

ETA: I fixed the spelling in the subject line. I'm pretty sure I had it wrong.  :-[

It kinda works: "You will never find a more ratchet hive of scum and villainy"

I'm pretty sure that's the correct word origin, actually.  Like wretched & hot mess had a baby,

Ha! That would be the hipster version of "The mother of imbeciles is always pregnant."

(You'll have to look at the TdF - Stage 13 thread for this to make any sense.)
