Race cancellations thread
« on: March 10, 2020, 05:07:10 PM »
NYC half and New Bedford half closed last week.
These are big events, as we know.

And now races all over have subsequently been canceled or postponed.

So this thread is to list and discuss all those cancellations, and any that affect your season.

And how you are approaching this.

USATF masters 10K championships in Dedham (April 26) still on as far as I know but I expect it to be canceled or moved to a later date. It's only 6 days after Boston. I bought airline tickets last month but can defer. I'd be heading into it at build-up stage anyway, not quite ready for prime time racing. However, was looking forward to getting back onto the masters circuit after a 6 month hiatus.

Hoping Bolder Boulder on Memorial Day is still a go. And I'm also thinking of Mt Evans Ascent (10,000 to 14,000 feet), a week or two after that. And the big one for me has been the world masters events in Toronto this summer. That one may or may not go. Bringing in some 8,000 athletes (40s to 90s) from all over the world for 2 weeks seems sort of risky at this point. I'm holding out some hope but also not buying tickets or filling out an entry for that.

I'm not an epidemiologist but think this might have a dual peak. One this spring, then sort of fall off over the summer, and then pick up again next fall/winter. So we might be in for a life-disrupting haul here, affecting everything not just participation at races.
I'll stick to running, thank you.

So the Asheville Half/Marathon for next weekend is cancelled as is a biggish trail 25/50k - Fonta Flora.  The Cooper River Bridge Race is postponed to Aug 1st and I'm ok with it and enjoying many of the posts of the whiny 10kers. Aug in Charleston isn't ideal but ctfu.  I may get to volunteer at an aid station for the Hellbender 100 that same weekend now if it's on.  We'll see.

I'm on the planning committee for the JCC's Falafel 5K and  :fingers:.  It's on my birthday this year and I'd really like to run it.

I was expecting it, but still a kick in the gut. I have a string of did not starts going back to October--Chicago (decided against it), Philly half (injured)--in addition to Tulsa (should not have started). And I signed up for a local 10K but was not ready to race in January, let alone run 6 miles.

Good time to just train and build that base.

Same here since Indy, glad I at least finished the 50K but had several DNS and a DNF due to injury. But I couldn't have done it any differently.

I got that email. It’s actually the James Joyce Ramble 10K. The ‘elites’ start up front, the rest of us riff-raff in the back. Challenging course, a few good hills. And of course people dressed up as characters from a James Joyce novel reading from the book at various points throughout the race. And then a big party with free beer afterward.

Sorry Coyote.

Starting to see races in June being cancelled.  A 3000 person race/walk just got cancel, that run partly by city staff and agencies to support senior homes.  Guess they think they will have other things on their plate in the hopefully soon aftermath of the pandemic.

In the meantime, whether we race this year or not, build or maintain your base and maybe work on some of those areas that are weak spots. For me this summer it's raw speed. My speed endurance/aerobic efficiency have been strong, but I could do some work to get my 400 time down some to help with middle distance type speed. Work on the 400 some to get better at 800-mile.

https://theknow.denverpost.com/2020/03/20/bolder-boulder-2020-rescheduled-labor-day/235829/

Bolder Boulder to Labor Day, and resorbs the Fortitude 10K--a new race managed by the same company but held in Fort Collins. I did it last year, and it's also the race where Randy and I did some sleuthing to out an age group bib mule a couple of years ago.

Anyway, fingers crossed for this and it actually might be my big race of the year because travel is, who knows?

It will change the race for this year because many of us *might* have kids heading back to school.  (man I hope so). But it's good they've figured it out for now.  I'm betting even June races (the few there were) are questionable.

I'm registered for the BQ.2 race in Geneva, IL in Sept and it could still hopefully happen.  BUT now who knows what will happen with the BAA's usual announcement.  If they even have it, so many races will have cancelled that who the fuck knows what that will look like.

I’m having a real hard time with motivation. I busted my ass training for Nationals and need a break from hard training. Jogging a little every other day, with P90X3 on the off days is all I can muster. Normally my motivation is the next race.  But maybe some speed endurance when we get to April. 400s. (Funny how for me that is speed endurance but for you it’s raw speed.  :)

all relative, right?

I'm working on a speed track right now, too.  Having the races go away is a bummer but does take some of the pressure off to cut this cycle short.  I'm sticking with the plan: I'll transition to marathon training in May for a mid Sept race and hope it happens.

I think +/- 6 hours a week is my happy place anyway, so I'm okay with just another week or two to get back there and then holding it at 6-7 hours with a couple light or moderate workouts a week is great for baseline training. And I have my spring time trial schedule all lined up, and my several from my masters team want to do that as well.

And for dalliance the reddit/slack group (mostly a bunch of milennials) has these weekly or so challenges. Last week we did the 800 m, this week it's a 1 minute hill climb, where you calculate the GAP pace on strava and plug that into an age grade calculator and come up with some numbers. They screwed up on the derivations though, and want us to put our "mile" pace into the calculator for 1000 m. So everyone is scoring in the 40s-50s% range.

After all that ramble however, I can see why Arrojo or anyone with a big spring race event or two would be disappointed. Yes take your break and get back at it. I'm thinking we will have a window by mid-late summer and only hope that it holds through the fall.

Next USATF championship is the road mile in August. So I might consider that, esp. now that plane tickets are already paid for. I just can't see them putting on WMAs in Toronto this summer. And if they have it I might consider USATF masters outdoors instead.
I'll stick to running, thank you.

Yes, absolutely understand the disappointment.  And with the relay I'm out *a lot* of money if the new date doesn't end up working.  So there's all the expense of these things, too.

One thing that's annoying is seeing races pop up as advertisements in my FB feed.  Very tone deaf of the race directors if they're now trying to get registration.  Not to mention...probably a waste of $$ for them.

Boston already offering refunds for 2020--so who knows if it even goes off in September. Some speculation that they'd do an elites only race, like Tokyo last month. Just volunteers and a few dozen runners each in the men's and women's field and some decent tv coverage. That'd give us something to cheer about.

I do think we'll be racing locally by early or mid-summer.

All of this is small compared to the big picture and the seriousness of the situation.

Totally agree re: big picture

I've been thinking about Boston while out on my recovery walks. Ordinarily there would have been dozens upon dozens of races this spring allowing people to qualify for Boston 2021. And then they'd announce from that group right around the date they've rescheduled for Boston 2020.

I think maybe Boston 2020 will happen in September - though who knows.  The people who train for it will already have abandoned their training once and will be hesitant to totally commit again.  Nobody wants to be Charlie Brown holding the ball for Lucy; doing so while running 70 miles a week  :nono: and potentially compromising your immune system during a redoubling of the virus. That will be a tough call. So will we really see the typical number of runners requalifying at Boston?  Who knows.

And there won't be the typical pool of BQs to select from since so many were cancelled this spring. Meanwhile there will be more hesitancy to qualify for 2022, let's be honest.  I think this changes the Boston Marathon for years to come.

If we even have a marathon season in 2020, they'd almost have to extend the qualifying window by several months. Say to CIM.

And I think there is a chance we won't seen things as normal for running anywhere until later next year or even into 2022. :(

Now if MM and DocB and their colleagues come up with vaccines as effective as the flu, maybe we'll be back in business before then.

I think you're 100% right.  And frankly how many of us can safely string together 20-24 milers in our areas w/o compromising our safety or others right now?  So much is closed?  And there are health impacts to pushing the body that far so marathon training is kind of a risk right now.
Fingers crossed for a vaccine.

I think we'll see a redoubling. June is iffy but July may happen. And I have a feeling the economy will be chosen over health. I'd start training for that one.

This IS the apocalypse. If there would be one hold out it would be Laz.

As an April Fool's joke Jamil Curry and Gary Robbins did a spoof video saying they had bought the Barkley from Laz.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUPstyZVxvQ

----------------------------------------------------

Jamjam also set up his own marathon. On the helipad on the top of his building.
(I wonder what the elevation is)

I bet nobody thought of running a marathon by doing 1000 laps on a 42 meter course.
At least you get to pass an aid station 1000 times.

Actually I think he did over 1500 laps. But with the wide swings around the
corners he must have run at least a mile extra.

It'll be super competitive.  Most people I know were bagging Nationals for the Worlds, but if it's the only game in town...

It's just a week after my BIL's (rescheduled) wedding so timing isn't great. However, we can sign up all the way to June 20, so lots of time to track the situation. I'll do the 10 if I go.

Yeah, and finding all the tracks around here locked killed off what little motivation I had to start sprint training. The high intensity is much more effort for me compared to jogging for several miles. My training motivation comes from racing. Now I’m just running aimlessly.

In other news, CT Masters Games scheduled for May 15, postponed until October 17. I’m surprised it took them this long to cancel.

I really think they aren't Coyote. I'm taking it very easy ramping back into running now because I don't think it's worth regressing and then finding out the race I planned won't happen anyways.

I know.  Doesn't bode well for the other fall marathons.

I'm supposed to start training for BQ.2 at the end of May and have started working on running again. But realistically I don't expect the race to happen. It's small but with 8 loops there's no distancing.

My race in September can't possibly happen. BQ.2 has a small field but it's a very small course: 8 laps in a park around a lake. And because one of the features is elite-style hydration they handle your water bottle over and over. It just won't work at all.

Holding out some hope for common sense but an elite only event with out masses of runners and spectators. Just volunteers and security. It would be good for TV and morale, and then they should put the ad revenues back into the Boston community for people that need it.

The Peachtree 10K will now take the place of a very popular half marathon they usually hold.  So plenty of grumbling about that one.

Bolder Boulder on Labor Day has superseded it's younger cousin The Fortitude (same company and format, in Fort Collins) which was scheduled for that holiday. Probably all moot because it's likely that all races of any size will be canceled this year.

Scott Douglas writes good/credible articles for RW (he's former editor of Running Times, when that was still in publication).

I like the idea of a rolling start or interval starts. Wave starts not so much unless the waves are small. I'd say interval starts of 4 per 30 seconds, in lanes for the first and last 200 m. You could get almost 500 runners in an hour, so not a mass race but a pretty good field. And I'd definitely be up for smaller races than that (100-200). For longer races, BYOB.

I went from middle school through college in Iowa, so everyone knew who Bix was. My high school friend's English Spaniel was named Bix.

Another friend won in the late 70s, before it became really big time. First 4-5 years it was more of a local/regional event with a few hundred participants. The year I ran was the first year it went big time, they brought in Bill Rodgers and number of entries doubled or tripled and the race took off after that. I'd like to go back, but have some other bucket list summer races like Falmouth, Beach to Beacon, and Peachtree that I'd also like to do.

Beach to Bay was moved from this weekend (maybe next) to October.  Doubtful I can do it if we have a marching band season.  CIM sent an email about deferring entries if they end up having to cancel.  That isn't until December, so who knows?

Maybe I just don't love running enough to get into virtual races?

That's too bad but expected. They sent out an email last month saying that they were going on a rolling 60 day decision date, so Greensboro's number just came up. The whole masters Grand Prix road race series this year is doubtful, although they are trying to be encouraging about it, and I heard a rumbling just yesterday that the entire circuit might be gone for good after this year. That'd be a real bummer.

May be so much wishful thinking but - next year maybe?
Perkele, I'm half Finnish. Sign me up! (well we'll see what happens over the winter/spring).

From USATF

BIG NEWS TODAY FROM WMA – WMA OUTDOOR IN FINLAND IN 2021
Earlier today WMA President Margit Jungmann announced major developments  as a result of the cancellation of the Toronto 2020 WMA (World Masters Athletics) Outdoor  Championships.  These developments had been in the works almost since  the day the Toronto cancellation was announced on March 25. Instead of  the indoor championships in Edmonton next year, WMA will hold its next  outdoor championships in Tampere, Finland next July – dates aren’t fix...

I got mixed word on Toronto, saw something initially that they would not be hosting next year and then something else saying that they might.

All USATF regional championships for masters have been canceled. They had the mid-continent championship scheduled in Ft. Collins and it's a really small and low-key meet, and would be easy to socially distance some, and it's not even until the last weekend of August. But it's gone too.

I've sort of heard that WMA indoor championships in Edmonton are already not likely to happen, and that's why they're already putting their hopes into Tampere, Finland for outdoors in the summer.

Larger running events or track races are going to be in the last wave of things to come back. Along with concerts and stadium sport events.
