what are you planning to make?

if you do Christmas and/or New Year thing that is.

I haven't decided yet (not that I make anything really), but will have this for sure:

that is good beer, there will be some in my house over the holidays too





we are going shopping today... whatever local meat looks good and is appropriately affordable will be the center of the meal... so I'll have to report in later

Xmas eve: (this year at my Sis's house)

Fresh shrimp and mom's nummy cocktails sauce.
Tenderloins....amazingly rich, beefy heaven. Wrapped in bacon and lovingly grilled by my BIL (who also happens to be the butcher who will cut our beef for the meal.)
Baked potatoes
Traditional green bean casserole
Massive garden salad
Roasted Brussels sprouts
Freshly baked French bread
Wine, beer, wine, beer....maybe some Bailey's
Dessert is always a spread of our homemade holiday cookies.  :preen:


Only five of us, since neither troll can make it in.
The boys are deeply depressed....not because they miss us, but because they are missing Uncle John's grilled tenderloins!! :(

moroccan-inspired vegetarian phyllo pie
roasted beet & walnut dip, hummus, tyrokafteri w/ pita
fruit & cheese stuffed puff pastry nibbles
cheese board w/ sourdough crackers, potato crackers
selection of salami, selection of mustards w/ baguette
eggnog fudge, sugar plums, dark chocolate red wine truffles, peppermint marshmallows, clementine & almond marshmallows

Christmas Day
TBD

New Year's Eve Karaoke & Dim Sum Fesitivities
selection of dim sum, TBD but including
scallion pancakes
pork buns
shrimp dumplings
fish cakes

New Year's Day
ginger beer & clementine glazed ham
spicy braised lentils
steamed dark leafy greens, whatever local stuff is still available
meringue roulade

I have no idea.

I think a lentil shepard's pie for Xmas eve and cinnamon buns or a coffee cake for bfast in the morning.

Christmas eve (celebrating on Saturday): Prime Rib, baked taters, green beans, and cherry pie. I am cooking.
Christmas day: No clue what the husband step dad is feeding us. Probably 4 different kinds of meat.

Yeah, DD and DH love potatoes more than anything. I think DD ate like 4 of them the other afternoon. I made oven potato chips and she devoured tray after tray out of the oven, LOL!!!!!! this is the recipe in the magazine http://www.marthastewart.com/338792/potatoes-anna

We are making snowman shaped pizzas on Christmas Eve.  I'm not sure about Christmas Day, I know I will make a big breakfast with bacon and eggs and maybe waffles, but dinner will likely be something low key.  Perhaps oven fajitas, since they are red and green.  There will be gingerbread waffles on New Year's, but other than that probably nothing special.

when I posted this thread, I was really inspired to make something Christmas-y, but the inspiration got washed away by yesterday's rain. 

so, it's probably going to be frozen pizza.

but, in the spirit of Christmas, I'm going to add some fresh(!) spinach to the pizza to make it red and green, and then, using my trusty kitchen shears, cut a snowman shape out of it before eating.

I have a tradition that started many years ago when I lived in NY. I can thank my ex, since it was his doing. King crab for Christmas dinner. I don't remember much else being served except for this wicked awesome onion french bread from the local seafood market.

Now it has morphed into King crab legs, steamed fingerlings with garlic and fresh dill  and steamed asparagus. I think I'll shuck up a couple dozen Malpeques (oysters) for apps.  All of it served with copious amounts of Champagne. :D

Christmas Eve - ham, roasted sweet potatoes and onions, broccoli and Christmas cookies.  I have to work half a day and it is just the three of us for dinner.

Christmas - roasted parsnip soup, stuffed Cornish hens, creamed spinach and a flourless chocolate cake

Christmas breakfast - apple bran muffins (DD's request), eggs, bacon and lots of fabulous coffee.

Reservations Friday night for my birthday!

I haven't even though about New Year's eve but New Year's day is hoppin' john, of course!

Christmas Eve: fried shrimp, fried chicken, fried jalepiños, fried okra, French fries, big salad, pie. We always have a theme. This year it's fry daddy. My favorite was our redneck Christmas because we had a lot of cheese dip and pigs in a blanket type stuff.

Christmas Day: Ham and whatever else my mom makes, and more pie.

New Years Eve: (which is Christmas with the in-laws) gumbo, salad, French bread. Even more pie.

xmas day... .99/lb disgusting Wal-Mart turkey at souls house.

boxing day... delicious free range turkey at our house, hosting my family.   expensive,  but so worth it.

I want to come eat with you...this and that crab you posted elsewhere. My newly discovered shellfish allergy may make it my last meal but it would be worth it.

My parents are coming over and we started a new tradition of me cooking Xmas eve for the 3 of us. This works because I can drink as much wine as I want and don't have to drive home. This year I am making a roast chicken, roasted asparagus and roasted potatoes. A salad w goat cheese, strawberries and walnuts. I have some Brie, crackers and dip etc. I am making an apple crumble too w vanilla ice cream. I think I'm starting at 2 to get everything ready.
Xmas day is at my sisters and I am hoping for ham.

Plenty of room and plenty of food. Apple crisp is done and veggies are chopped. I need to start the chicken soon. Did I mention they wanted to come over at 5?? I asked that they leave the house at 5:30. Otherwise we're done early and looking at each other by 7. I broke the coffee pot today so no coffee. :(

We used the Herb Garlic pizza dough from Trader Joe's.  It has onion, mushroom, and sausage under the cheese.  Can't wait to dig in!

Nice pizza!

Our pizza plan fell apart.  We were not exactly very organized yesterday and didn't call (or even think to call) to order the pizzas until after the places had closed at 2PM.  So, we ended up with Pizza Hut, which I like, but no one else does (though I am not sure how this is possible.  I can understand it not being a favorite, but not "liking" is a different matter entirely).
