Puff pastry

I bought puff pastry squares from the store. I didn't realize until I opened them tonite that they were whole wheat. I filled them with apple pie filling and baked for 6 minutes over the time stated on the package. They still tasted a little like dough to me. And they weren't flaky. Is it the wheat? Should I have baked longer?

No help, but what a coincidence, I'm going to try to make anchovy puffs tonight and it calls for puff pastry - I've never used it before.

I've never used whole wheat puff pastry.  With the reg puff pastry, it doesn't taste doughy if cooked thoroughly (to the point where it's golden all over).

I love puff pastry! I usually make empandas with it.

I wonder why yours was still doughy? I wonder if maybe your oven temp is off. Have you baked other things successfully?

I can't recall baking anything in this oven yet.

did you roll them out?  That's what I did and it came out puffy and flaky.

I didn't not. Are you supposed to? I bought some regular ones today so I'll try it again. I don't have my roller yet so I'll have to look for something to improvise.

well, in my expert opinion (as in making puff pastries one time)  I think so.  Every recipe I looked at for puffs required rolling the stuff out.
I rolled it out to maybe twice its length.

Was it completely thawed? Maybe I the center was still frozen it didn't bake as thoroughly.

I've never rolled out pre-made puff pastry and it's always been fine.

What temperature did you bake it at?

They were thawed. I left the package out for awhile. I actually thought they were too thawed because the first pieces were sticking to each other.

I think I baked at 350. Whatever the package said. I'll have to look at it.

Generally puff pastry likes a hot oven.  Preheat and at least 375 or 400.
