8:43.93 3200
« on: May 11, 2015, 07:48:28 PM »
One of the runners on my grandson's track team ran 8:43.93 for 3200 meters, and lost.  The top nine all ran faster than 9:00 minutes.  At least he came away with a state record (CT).

What the hell?  Did they pump EPO into the air or something??

I'd wager that LaSalle guy was about half a lap ahead of the previous RI state record as well.

It's happening everywhere, 9:00 is the new 9:15. Here's a race from the other week in Provo Utah, elevation 4500'. These are outstanding times in their own right, and consider altitude, the are ready to run about 12 sec faster. Utah?

1. Conner Mantz 8:58.02a
2. Joshua Collins 9:03.80a
3. 9:03.84
4. McKay Johns 9:05.52a
5. Alek Parsons 9:06.58a
6. Zachary Jacklin 9:12.92a

I forgot to post that Ostberg's last lap was 60, but it wasn't good enough.  I remember when breaking 10:00 was a big deal.

There is a video at: http://ny.milesplit.com/videos/insider/87653  They only caveat is that you have to join "Mile Split Insider".  I don't know what that involves.

For some reason there have been a lot of prodigies lately. Maybe it has to do with anybody being able to get top notch training ideas from the internet. Or maybe the media is covering the stars better, giving up and comers a hero to inspire them.

Matthew Maton, a 19 year old high schooler from Summit High in Bend, Oregon went sub 4 at the Oregon Twilight meet at Hayward Field in Eugene. It was a race set up to get Will Geoghegan and Eric Jenkins a sub 4. Maton didn't go with the leaders and drafted in 7th or 8th place for a couple of laps (it was windy) then closed in :58 for 3:59.38

Third fastest high schooler ever, but some purists argue that he is 19 and it should not count.

He is expected to be in the dream mile with Grant and Brannigan and multiple sub 4s are possible.

And of course the question on everybody's mind is: is Amaris Tyynismaa the next Mary Cain or Anita Hinriksdottir? Or is she the next Briana Jackucewicz or Cayla Hatton?

Heh, I just checked. Hatton's run at Snowflake is still up.

Ben Saarel also ran some sick times a couple years ago, 8:49 at the BYU meet, 8:45 at Arcadia in California.

As someone who turned 19 in the February of my sophomore year in college, I'm one of them.

Well you were exceptionally young!

I didn't realize Maton was 3rd fastest, but do recall that Danielson, Liquori, and Verzbicas were also in the 3:59s.
Technically, Maton should count simply because I think in all states 19 is high school he is high school eligible. The catch is he's not on a team, as he was kicked off the Summit (Bend, OR) team over the winter, so he's not on a high school team. But Verzbicas was also 19 when he ran 8:29 and 3:59, and in the former at Pre he had his own rabbit. Likewise, Mary Cain (although 18 at the time) broke all sorts of records a couple years ago but she wasn't actually on the team, coached by Salazars group. Finally, Houston McTear ran 9.0 100 yards (tied the world record) and made the 1976 Olympic team as a 19 year old high school senior (turned 19 in February of his senior year).

Both Danielson and Liquori ran sub 4 in the same year but I don't think they were in the same race. Looking forward to seeing how all these kids do at the Dream Mile and at Pre.

Bill Rodgers didn't break 9:00 for two miles until he was in college. Then he "retired".

In the 1990s no more than 10-12 high school boys broke 9:00 for 3200. An entire decade. Several were from Mead High School in Spokane, WA. Now it's common, and not even considered all that great. (I think it's amazing that kids these days are running so fast!)
