Title: **Boston Marathon 2018**
Post by: nadra's babydaddy on April 15, 2018, 04:30:49 PM
Despite the near guarantee of slower times, there's something appealing about the "suck it, bitches!" from mother nature years.  It's a great way to level the playing field and with the caliber of white folk entered on both sides, means that the Americans have as good a shot as anybody!  Can't wait to see what kind of bizarre outfit Salazar has Rupp compete in.

Who else is running (or at least 'participating')?  Give me bib numbers and goals!

ETA:

Ro Chi Minh - 11473
Arrojo - 28300
Ellen - 25788

GOGOGO!!!

Tomorrow is survival mode for me.  I've been working to get back to Boston for so long that at this point, given the weather, I just want to finish.  I'm super curious about what the elites wear in this shit.  I'm also a little optimistic that it hasn't started raining yet, at least out here in Arlington.

I'm 11473

28300.

My last Boston Marathon; I’ll be slow.  My goal is to run as well as I can, finish strong and smile at the end.  I’ve been through all the stages of grief with this forecasted heavy rain and heavy headwinds; denial (BS it’s not gonna rain), anger (how could this happen after all my hard training??!), grief (waaaaah!) to acceptance.

Bring it on. I’ve run in below zero temps, ice, snow. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Yeah, it’s gonna suck but there’s beer at the finish line. And it’s gonna be badass.

Pretty slim pickins for streaming options this year.  The BAA site doesn't seem to be doing one, so it's pretty much impossible to get at work without a cable provider login, which I have no idea off the top of my head.  Currently watching on a youtube stream of some dude's TV in spanish  :P

First year since 1990 that an African didn't win on either side.

Kawabunga passed all the women except Desi.

Slowest winning time since 1976 for the men (the inferno year) and 1978 for the women.

More oddities coming soon!.....

I set my dvr to record the race.  So, I went downstairs and did a workout on my rowing machine.  After the shower, I started watching the race and fast forwarding through the commercials.  Des was in second place and having seen her run before, I thought she might be able to close.  Just then, my cable went out.  So, I picked up my ipad and hit the marathon icon.  Of course, all I got was a message that you could watch the marathon on Monday.  By the time I got the race, Desi had an insurmountable lead.  So, the dvr is set to record a replay, so I can get to see Desi take the lead.

In the top 10 Men and Women

2 Kenyans
2 Canadians
2 Japanese
1 Nederlander
13 Americans

I think the key to rid the running world of those speedsters from Africa would be to move Patriots Day to mid-January. :D

Everything is wet and I'm dying.  Stopped to punch a random guy with resting douche-face and steal his umbrella.  Heartbreak.  What drives you to push forward when you're simultaneously climbing a hill and swimming upstream?  Pretended the asphalt was Trump's face.  Effective.

I’m pissed that Ellen beat me. <kidding>. Ellen rocks.  I posted this on FB:

What a crazy race that was. An hour slower than any marathon I’ve ever run, but I can’t think of a better way to run my final Boston Marathon.  My goal was to give it all I had, finish strong, and smile.

So I embraced the relentless downpour and headwinds with the help of my amazing wife Robin crewing me, the millions of cheering spectators, and volunteers (thank you GFRC).   They told me I’d never run again and I just completed the most badass Boston Marathon ever.

I can’t believe how awful it was out there.. we saw some scary sights.. runners looking catatonic.. we were a mile 24...

Also, not an easy day to spectate.. walked over 14,000 steps in wet soggy hiking boots and my knee is sore..

My daughter is pleased enough with her race but says the whole experience was the highest or highs and the lowest of lows.. she badly positive split and almost everyone I checked did too.. she negative split her last two races before that.. she feels like the weather psyched her out and she also made the virgin Boston mistake of going out too fast.. although I don’t think that would have mattered today..
Mad props to anyone who persevered today

That seems how everyone's race was... all the results I looked at had really slow miles for the last two miles..my daughter said she really wanted to quit at the half and pictures friends took of her at mile 16 did not look good... congrats on your awesome race! I tried to get back out when I got your update at 35k as we had gone in to warm up but didn't make it back in time :(

It's already halfway written for you!

Jeez, those last few miles were like the bermuda triangle.  Even on the elite side I've never seen implosions like that.  Kirui had a 90 second lead on the crazy little asian after 35k, then ended up 2 1/2 minutes back.   Virtually the entire chase pack on both sides dropped out after the final glimpse of them.  Lead man caught all the women except desi (that was the main suspenseful part at the end to see if he could pull it off  :P  ).   Sarah Sellers (Utah native!) didn't even realize she was second until someone told her and then still didn't believe them  :hah:

I was talking to a girl at the gym about logistics for the upcoming Broad Street Run while watching and I was reminded that the last time I did that race [2016], it was in conditions much like they ran up in Boston yesterday

That race is only ten miles; I can't imagine what 26.2 would have been like = certainly a Sufferfest

Again, well done to everyone, and I hope you have all rehydrated, refueled, rested and defrosted today

Yeah it was exactly the same!!! Except for the 30 degree temps and howling winds in your face

Interesting article.

Why Men Quit and Women Don’t (http://"https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/20/opinion/boston-marathon-women-nurse.html")

"The results for Boston, one of the most competitive marathons in the world, were doleful this year: The winning times for both men and women were the slowest since the 1970s, and the midrace dropout rate was up 50 percent overall from last year.

But finishing rates varied significantly by gender. For men, the dropout rate was up almost 80 percent from 2017; for women, it was up only about 12 percent. Overall, 5 percent of men dropped out, versus just 3.8 percent of women. The trend was true at the elite level, too."

Much ado about nothing.

1) 90% of those idiots were in a state of delirium
2) she was tailgating (though I guess he did sort of cut her off)
3) it WAS after the finish line
4) He may well have said sorry, but you can't tell from the video.

Poor self-awareness, but not exceptionally douchey.  Still outside Moonwalking Allison's league.

Also he was far from alone in exaggerated finishing gestures if the person in the puke green on the far right who finished just after him is any indication.  He just had the more unfortunate timing.  And at least neither of them crossed the line with 7 kids spread out along the length of the road, which I believe was one of Moonwalking Allison's crimes.
