To honor us 'Mericans the French have decided to start the race on July 4.
I haven't been following the lead up closely but had a conversation with a friend Sunday. His take is that it will be a battle between Contador and Nabali. Even though Contador won the Giro he appears to be in great form as does Nibali. I'm guessing Froome rather than Nibali will be Contador's big challenger.
There are only two TTs and one is a TTT. The other is Stage 1 and is less than 20km. This just might help Quintana.
TJ -- is in good form but doesn't appear to have any teammate to help him in the mountains. Froome dropped easily and often in the Dauphine. Talansky finished 4 minutes behind TJ at the Dauphine.
I miss Phinney.
-
That cost him the Dauphine; a little help to stay with Froome on that last climb would have been so nice
With Alpe D'Huez on the penultimate day? It could be EPIC
That's exactly what my friend said.
BMC should have hired Horner.
-
Jersey picks:
Yellow - Contador
Green - Sagan
Polka Dot - Some dude I've never heard of
White - Quintana
Cool stage-by-stage guide:

My pick for early stage carnage:
Stage 3, which includes cobbles and the climb of the Mur de Huy at the end. :eating-popcorn-03:
-
Yellow: Contador
Green: Sagan
Polka dot: Quintana
White: Pinot
And I read that Froome missed an out of competition test...
-
I've not followed a single thing on the lead up to TdF this year.
No clue who's in/out/team/fitness/doped up.
should be fun.
"Who's that?"
"Which squad is this....stupid new colors and sponsors confuse the hell outta me."
"Who's this guy?"
"Where's (fill in any name) this year?"
"Banned?"

"Drink whenever Phil Ligget screws up a rider's name.
Drink whenever Phil and Paul talk about the scenic French countryside(includes tourist sites, old castles, and landmarks). Finish your drink if that "beautiful" old church doesn't actually look very special."
"Yeah I don't want get blackout drunk before 9 am..."
Exactly this !!!

I must admit to being out of this year too. Just too much going on to pay attention to everything/everyone.

I must admit to being out of this year too. Just too much going on to pay attention to everything/everyone.
Same here. But I might as well make some predictions guesses.
Yellow -- Froome. (I don't care how in shape Pistol Pedro is, I'm not rooting for him.)
Green -- Sagan -- because he was a beast last year. No one came near his points total.
Polka Dot -- Quintana
Yellow -- Kwi-a-cow-ski (I'm too lazy to go look up the spelling)
Top American rider -- Talansky because he'll have more help in the mountains than TJ.
It's kind of awesome to see that Quintana is the designated leader for Valverde's team. Does this make Valverde road captain?
-
Stage 1 is a 13.8 km TT on pancake flat terrain. The map shows the route has a lot of cornering.
Who's your favorite for the fastest ride and the yellow jersey?
-
stage 1
Sagan....or the Manx missile....I'm gonna miss Kittel. 💔
-
Wait.
No.
It's a time trial...not a sprint finish.
I change my vote to (fill in a name)
But I'll still miss Kittel. :preen:
-
...off to find out what happened to Kittel.
-
:drooling-5: (I got distracted while I was looking for Kittel.)

So...Kittels been sick.
For tomorrow's TT, I think it will be either Tony Martin or Rohan Dennis. I'm guessing Dennis.
No Wiggins. No Phinney. Cancellara did not take the Swiss TT title a week or so ago -- trained for the road race so he's not in top TT form.
-
:heartbeat: let me be the first to volunteer to comfort and rub down Fabian :lambie:
-
You're such a giver!
-
I love all the mountain stages this year, in particular stage 19 which will take down to the wire.
I picked Nibali last year but I'm a bit nervous with all the doping on Astana.
Yellow - Contador
Polka dot - Quintana
White - Quintana
Green - Cavendish
-
I can honestly say that it is this annual thread that got me interested in the TdF. So don't let me down! Where's the analysis I've come to depend on?
If you haven't seen yet, don't read below:
Should Cavendish take the blame for Martin's lost chance for the yellow jersey? If so, was it thoughtlessness or selfishness that caused him to literally stop pedaling? Or, as Cav says, did the failure lay with his lead out man?
-
Fabian Cancellara!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
:heartbeat: Ima make myself the filling in a Cancellara and Greipel sammich.
-

I'm sure if he would have remembered or thought of it or been told by the team manager about it, he'd have kept pedaling. It's a lot to ask when you busy trying to beat Griepel, Cancellara, Sagan, and everyone else in the race to take a stage win.
ETA: If Tony Martin wants the jersey he'll just have to take it from Cancellara. It's only 3 seconds, right? :lambie:
-
So, I'm a complete dork. DH and I are probably going to be in London for 3 weeks next June. I just looked up where le tour is headed in 2016...and booked a room in Cherbourg for June 30 to July 4. No payment due now and I can cancel up until next June. Very likely we won't be able to do this...but I figure that by the time we figure out if we can swing it, everything will be booked. And, besides, it'll be fun to think about if nothing else!
-
Martin was in a tough spot.
There's no way he beats Cancellara in a sprint.
Also, his job yesterday was to help Cav with the stage, so he couldn't go on a solo attack from, say, 5k out or something.
Sounds to me like drama for the sake of drama.

oh, and this.
The Badger wouldn't whine about it, he'd just to out the next day and kick some butt !
-
Today's finish should be a hoot.
Mur de Huy = Belgian for "straight freaking up"

-
Did they design the first few days of this years race to avoid the mass carnage like they had last year? Stage 1 TT is safe. Stage 2 was on flat wide roads -- at least the parts I saw. Stage 3 has a steep climb at the end to spread out the finishers. I haven't looked ahead to check out the other stages.
Stage 3 Anvers (Antwerp) to Huy.

What the heck are the rules on stopping a stage? I'm not sure I've ever seen this before.
-
*** SPOILER ALERT ***
I think I heard the Simon Garrens is out.
Did you see Cancellara's bike go flying? Apparently Cancellara has a concussion but hasn't withdrawn yet.
-
That was brutal. Shite. Holy crappoli. It makes me shaky, even watching the replay.
Ass over teakettle...Fabian needs me, stat!
-
His endo WAS pretty spectacular.
Probably better that he land in the nice soft ditch like he did than land on the pavement, though.
-
God that was awful. I can't watch the replay, makes me nauseous.

Or that light pole. There were a whole collection of riders and bikes wrapped around it by the time everything stopped.

Apparently, ten Dam's shoulder was dislocated, team popped it back in, and he's riding again.

Jerseys -- As usual I'm struggling with the jerseys, except for AG2R with has the usual white with brown and light blue squares. I found a cheat sheet here: http://www.letour.com/le-tour/2015/us/ (http://www.letour.com/le-tour/2015/us/)
Find the gold bar in the middle and click on "TEAMS". Lampre, MovieStar, BMC, and Sky have not changed much since last year so that helps.
Tinkoff is bizarre. Yellow camo???
ETA: It's not as bad as I thought. Astana, Trek, and Orica Greenedge have not changed too much. We've discussed Garmin's before so that's not too hard. Thank goodness they kept the argyle on it so I can pick them out.
-
Tinkoff is bizarre.

Okay. Bizarre but appropriate.
-
At least Tinkoff didn't make the squad wear that neon pink hair look. :old:
-
{{{{ Fabian }}}}
-
Is that Sagan?
-
Froome in yellow. Cancellara still on the last climb.
ETA: Tony Martin is now just one second out of yellow. There are cobblestones tomorrow. Didn't Froome break two wrists on cobblestones last year?
-
uh-oh
No biggie. If three doping positives last year didn't matter I don't imagine this will either.
-
They are already on probation but the conditions of it are rather vague. I'm not sure exactly what it would take for them (or any other team) to lose their license. http://www1.skysports.com/cycling/news/21683/9838267/astana-escaped-losing-licence-as-punishment-disproportionate (http://www1.skysports.com/cycling/news/21683/9838267/astana-escaped-losing-licence-as-punishment-disproportionate)

doesn't show sector 7, since the riders have already passed it.
Sector 6: Artres, 1.2km (starts at 175km/49km from the finish)
Sector 5: Quérénaing, 1.6km (starts at 180.5km/43.5km from the finish)
Sector 4: Verchain-Maugré, 1.2km (starts at 185.5km/38.5km from the finish)
Sector 3: St Python, 1.5km (starts at 195.5km/28.5km from the finish)
Sector 2: Quiévy, 3.7km (starts at 198km/26km from the finish)
Sector 1: Carnières, 2.3km (starts at 208.5km/15.5km from the finish)

blue sleep, not dorky. Well, no more a dork than me, anyway.
We were on a family trip to Paris in July of 2011 (the July timing was no accident), and took a train out to Lisieux for a day to catch a stage.
In one word: Awesome.

What's with Cavendish? Is he not getting lead outs or is he a bit skittish after last year's fall?

I didn't get to watch yesterday so I really can't help with the questions.
Stage 6 -- That looks like an interesting finish.

After the 4th in stage 2, he was actually complaining in an interview (?!?!) about Renshaw peeling off too early.
Not a good plan.
I didn't see yesterday's finish, but he coverage I read said that Cav "lost" Renshaw in the runup yesterday so had to freelance.
Honestly, I think Griepel, Kittel, and others are just faster now.
He's just not "the man" anymore, he's realizing it, and he's getting frustrated.

What a talent.

Whoa. Just read the result details. Ouch. Whoa.

Whoa. Just read the result details. Ouch. Whoa.
I caught the last 5 km. There was a crash at about 1 km out. They were on a steep uphill and Tony Martin swerved to miss someone on his left and Nibali was right there with Froome right on his wheel. Martin went down and broke his collarbone. Nibali went down but is fine. Froome managed to stay upright. Tejay went down. I think he's okay. The uphill did help mitigate the damage since it slowed things down a lot but the road was mostly blocked for a little while. Only a few were in front of the crash and contested the sprint.
-
:D
-
What was Martin dodging? It was such an erratic move. Feel bad for him. His collarbone is apparently in several pieces, a compound fracture. Ouch.
-

Martin held the race lead until he crashed at the foot of the climb to the finish in Le Havre after touching the rear wheel of a Europcar rider. The bump caused him to swerve into Giant-Alpecin's Warren Barguil, who in turn knocked Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) over. Nairo Quintana (Movistar) was unable to avoid the fallen riders and he, too, crashed, while Chris Froome (Sky) narrowly avoided the pile of fallen riders.

Contador and Gesink crashed in the neutral zone today.
Not hurt, got back on, but really ? In the neutral zone ?
-
just saw this:
16:58:32 CEST
Riders are dropping back to the team cars for drinks. The Tinkoff-Saxo team is again using a special vest which can carry bottles.
Ivan Basso has just loaded up and is heading back to the peloton.
Had no idea he was still racing.
-
Feck, I hate it when top riders crash out in the early stages - last years race was so boring after Froome and Contador were knocked out.

Ummmm...does cocaine really "enhance" performance?
If this is enhancement:
"Paolini finished 172nd in a group that was almost 17 minutes behind stage winner Tony Martin."
-
Love how Martin handled the disappointment, very classy. Cavendish has been a good balance of cocky and gracious. Nibali on the other hand... geesh! Get it under control.

I have to admit I was thinking the same thing. First Lance and now Basso.
It looks like we're not the only ones this occurred to. http://www.livescience.com/51538-testicular-cancer-cycling.html (http://www.livescience.com/51538-testicular-cancer-cycling.html)
In addition, there's no link between the drugs used by cyclists and testicular cancer. Most of the drugs that cyclists take are aimed at increasing the amount of red blood cells in the body, rather than affecting hormone production, Schwaab said.
What about testosterone?

It's the transfer season. It's a good time to talk to everyone. Plus, vodka probably doesn't make a great post-stage recovery drink.
-
I have a question for you experts. On the team time trial, time is stopped after the fifth man crosses. But what about the guys that paced them in the beginning and then dropped out of the train? In order to continue with the tour, do they still have to finish the stage, even though their times won't be counted to the team event?
-
Too bad the TV flattens out those hills. My MIL asked why the riders were going so much slower near the end. In a couple of shots it actually appeared they were going downhill when they most certainly were not.
-
That makes sense...but do they literally have to finish the stage? I never saw any stragglers on the course. Can they just pull over and call it quits for the day?
-
Tommy Voeckler got himself into the breakaway today.
I feel that all is right in the world now.
-
Nope; you have to finish the stage [AND within a certain time cutoff] to move on to the next day
This. The first five over the line get the time of the fifth teammate to cross. The rest get their actual time and have to be sure not to miss the time cut. Note that if the remaining teammates finish in the same group as the fifth rider they will get the same time.

Darth Vino:
We gave the green light to Jakob to go ahead in the classification. Vincenzo needs a good mechanic because something is broken in his head.
Fuglsang:
I have not heard it from him (Vinokourov), but it was their order that I should go if I had something anything left, after we had been sitting for a while with Vincenzo. Now we will see, I'm still well behind in the standings. Whether it's worth the drive for it, it we will see the next few days.
-
Ha, Something broken in his head. Nice Vino.
-
Well it looks like Nibali doesn't do well off the juice.
Way to go Majka! I loved his winks at the camera on his stage wins last year.
Too many people act like Froome has already won.

Froome's almost 3 minute lead over the number two guy really does put a damper on things.
6 DNFs yesterday. It must have been brutal.
Stage 12:

Garmin sent Dan Martin up the road yesterday. I'm guessing they'll try to send Talansky today.

Big breakaway group today.
damn work is getting in the way of watching it live, so following on cyclingnews.

Rain and hail at the finish. Maybe things will improve before the cyclists get there.

Rain might be welcomed on the climb, hail not so much.

The downhills are scary -- lots of riding cautiously.

Geraint Thomas (Team Sky), on chasing down attacks for teammate and overall leader Chris Froome
“When he [Nairo Quintana] attacked, I was like, ‘oh no’, because Richie was done and the pressure was on me. Fortunately, I had the legs to respond and slowly ride back up to him. When I was doing that, the confidence was really good, I thrive off that, and then you kind of ride better because, you know, I just chased down Nairo!
"It’s all about riding for Froomie, I’m up on GC but I wasn’t even thinking about that, so yeah, it was another good day.”
:D Very cool.

I loved watching Majka yesterday!
I am not sure it is possible but I think Froome and Tejay both look much leaner than last year.
And I adore little Tommy Voeckler.
-
I missed pages! (Sigh. No cable TV, no TdF). But yes, Womens World Cup is in France in 2019. I'm not sure what the overlap will be, but it seems that the latter part of the soccer should butt up closely to early stages of TdF. So if I save my pennies and vacation time, I could probably do a little of both.

DH made the "off the PEDs" comment about Nibali as well.
Handbag of courage.
Love!

I'm off the grid this morning. Someone else will have to post the stage elevation graphic.

I've got this.
Green jersey day, but a tough one.
Intermediate sprint, then some nasty-ish climbs, then Sagan-friendly finish.

and it is hot out there today!

the finish was a good read. Cant wait to see it later.

Those guys on the break away must have been crushed to get caught so close to the finish line.

We thought they wouldn't get caught.
:panic:
Yes, the finish was exciting!

I peeked at who won. That's pretty cool.

Stage 14 - Why did I think we were done with the mountains of the Pyrenees?

Just a bit of reshuffling at the GC level.

I retract my endorsement of steephilltv. I got a virus from one of the European TV links Saturday morning.

Stage 16 - What is wrong with these people? Mondays are supposed to be rest days!

Gerraint Thomas.
OUCH !!
-
:panic:
Sharp corners, steep descent, wicked speed, other bikers on the road.
...he's up and back racing....yay!
-
Wow, I thought G Thomas was out after that.
I would be staying far far away from Barguil if I were riding. If he doesn't cause a crash, he still right there.

REST DAY !!!!

a few good Sagan nuggets in here:
http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/fifth-near-win-for-sagan-at-tour-de-france (http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/fifth-near-win-for-sagan-at-tour-de-france)
An attack on the descent of the Col de Manse in pursuit of Ruben Plaza (Lampre-Merida) proved futile in the search for stage 16 victory but the aggressive tactics of Sagan saw the 25-year-old claim 45 more points in the green jersey competition and win the day’s most aggressive rider award for a second straight day.
"I knew the descent from two years ago and from seeing it on television with the Beloki crash," Sagan said of the incident in 2003 that saw Lance Armstrong forced off the road and into a field before re-join the road. "I was again very close. I'm glad because I was going for second place… No, I'm joking. I really don't know what I should do better. I tried everything. I knew I had to try as hard as I could in the descent, even if it meant dying."
As Sagan approached the line, 30 seconds down on Plaza, he took his hands off the bars and thumped his chest, explaining that he and his teammates had watched The Wolf of Wall Street and he was recreating a scene from the film to demonstrate his pride in performance during the 201km stage.
"I am proud for what I have, everybody watching me, everybody looking at what I do. Maybe unlucky, but for me, I am proud because I think everybody is scared of me and nobody wants to work with me, they want to be with me in the break, after no one wants to work with me," he said. "They are thinking I do everything but I don't know, it's cycling…
"I have very good friends in the group. [If] Everybody stay with me then it's very hard to beat everybody, but it's ok," he added on another runner's up position.
In the mix zone after the podium protocols, an ebullient Sagan called out ‘Hello Froomey', while the riders in the green and yellow jerseys enjoyed a brief moment of banter in between interviews, with Sagan telling Froome to flip his cap down before the duo went their separate ways.
After the exchange, Sagan was asked why he went into the breakaway for a third straight day, replying because "I have big balls" leaving the interviewer stunned before letting out a nervous laugh and continuing on.
Sagan may have been enjoying the questions from the media, explaining that the result "is motivation" to continue trying, but Tinkov wasn't as chipper in his post-stage comments.
"I think I am more disappointed than Peter because Peter looks happy," Tinkov said in Gap. "I look disappointed for him. I think Peter is the strongest rider of this Tour de France, for me he is stronger than Chris Froome, and he deserves at least one win."
With a fourth green jersey all but assured in Paris, and possibly the most aggressive rider prize as well, Sagan expects the efforts of his breakaway adventures to catch up with him. The Slovakian will inevitably take a back seat to overall contender Alberto Contador as the race heads into the Alps. The focus will be to try and wrestle the yellow jersey off of Froome’s shoulders.
"It will be a very hard next four days. I think the invoice from these three stages will come in the next four days," Sagan said. "I have to pay for what I did."
-
I love Sagan! He gives the best interviews. Man, I'd like to buy him a beer.

Stage 17 -- Digne-les Bains to Pra Loup. This is a little northeast of Nice, headed into the Alps.

They're on the category 2 climb.

Van Garderen is dropped again
Tejay van Garderen is again in difficulty with 73km to go
:( Maybe he's just struggling a little after the rest day?
-
Tinkoff went on a rant (http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/tour-de-france-tinkov-wants-to-start-a-cycling-revolution) at the UCI and mentioned Velon which I'd never heard of. So I googled it.
http://www.velon.cc/about/ (http://www.velon.cc/about/) It looks like an team/owners group maybe?
-
Darn. :(
He had been sitting in third place overall, 3:32 behind race leader Chris Froome (Sky) and just 22 seconds behind Movistar's Nairo Quintana. On the first climb of the day, however, it became clear that something was wrong as van Garderen slipped behind on the category 3 Col des Lèques.
The American was seen back at the medical car as he trailed some two minutes behind the maillot jaune group.
A slowing in the main peloton and a descent from the Col de Touts Aures allowed van Garderen to rejoin the group of race favourites, but an attack by Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) sent him out the back once more.
The category 2 Col de la Colle proved to be the end of the road for van Garderen, and he signaled to his team car to stop.
It is the first time in his career that he abandoned a Grand Tour.
The third place spot now goes to Alejandro Valverde (Movistar).

Talansky took a second!
Sagan will be all upset.

Kwiatkowski abandoned, too. I noticed at least three other abandons in the live feed. It must have been a brutal stage.

Stage --- Third to last.

Froome will be under whatever siege the remaining contenders can muster. I'm ready for Quintana to do something amazing.

I guess it takes
a mechanical Nibali to create excitement.

I agree!

So, do you think Quintana can take over two minutes off Froom on the Alp D'huez (sp?)? Its getting a little exciting. And good on Nibali for winning the stage and getting into 4th. Another good day and he could podium.

No, but I hope he tries!

This is going to be a really good stage. Everyone is going to attack otherwise no chance at the podium.
I love the TdF but will not miss the Hannah and her horse commercials. :lambie:

Ditto on the Hannah commercials....barfy...

That was fun !

That was fun !
Wonderful stage!
Anybody think that Nibali, Comtador or any others will try to make up some time this last stage?
-
Well that was a bit like watching cricket - got more exciting as we got close to the end. Much more interesting race than last year. I hope we have another good one next year.
-
I love the TdF but will not miss the Hannah and her horse commercials. :lambie:
They are awful.
I think this year's tour was kind of boring. Froome was in yellow for so long and Sky is so strong...there were some great stages and Quintana really tried but meh.
ETA - I just looked at my picks. One out of four - Sagan!
-
Jersey picks:
Yellow - Contador
Green - Sagan
Polka Dot - Some dude I've never heard of
White - Quintana
My pick for early stage carnage:
Stage 3, which includes cobbles and the climb of the Mur de Huy at the end.
2 out of 4 right.
Do I get bonus points for predicting stage 3 carnage ?
-
I love all the mountain stages this year, in particular stage 19 which will take down to the wire.
I picked Nibali last year but I'm a bit nervous with all the doping on Astana.
Yellow - Contador
Polka dot - Quintana
White - Quintana
Green - Cavendish
1 out of 4 bah
-
I only got Sagan right. Not only did I miss the white jersey winner, I called the jersey by the wrong color. :-[
It was good to watch Quintana and Valverde working together. Taking 2nd and 3rd was impressive though I know the win would have meant more to them.
I was right about Talansky being the top placing American. But I would have rather seen Tejay finish than go out due to illness.
Did Farrar do anything note worthy this tour?

I thought so also.
