Title: NBA Finals time!
Post by: ZyggiStarbucks on April 17, 2018, 06:19:10 PM
C’mon, siamesedream! You and I are about the only bouncy-sportsball fans, so I posted here in the Empty Pub.
The C’s first win was hard-fought. The Greek Freak is fun to watch, so I won’t be upset if Milwaukee wins the series, though...

Is Embiid playing yet, with his phantom of the opera mask? :D

The mask is awesome, and Embiid needs to play. Feck this Miami team up.

Also, Ronda Rousey went from being MMA champion to professional wrestling, which is the equivalent of Jim Thorpe arm wrestling guys in bars for drinks in his final days.

Eh, better for em to win it without the disruption of a crybaby ball hog.

I go back and forth on that. He could definitely mess up the chemistry of the current roster, unless he was willing to step back and be an "elder statesman" on the team. I'm not sure he's capable of doing that, he's got quite an ego. At the same time, it would be compelling to see a starting five with Simmons at PG, Lebron at power forward, and Embiid at center!

We had Dallas and Giants fans where i grew up. People born in Philly and NJ who were seduced by the America's Team campaign that Dallas ran in the late 70s and early 80s. Or New York transplants.

The point may be moot if the Greek Freak &Co have their way. :panic:

My kid asked me to order a couple Basketball Superstars books the other day. I said sure, because they were inexpensive. Then he saw a book about Giannis Antetokuonpo and was like, “can I get this one, too?” :D

The Sixers would have home court advantage if the Bucks win, OTOH, Giannis is a match up nightmare, even for Embiid.

So I'm not sure who I should root for.

I guess the ultimate question is, do the Sixers or C's have a reasonable chance of winning the championship this year? Who(m)ever emerges from the west is going to be tough to beat.

We'll see. It might serve them better, in the long run, to lose this series. If they get to the eastern conference finals, sixers management will think that the team has arrived and maybe not spend to bring in a good free agent during the off-season.

The problem is that neither team has a realistic chance of winning a championship this year, it's all about the next two years.

What, you don't like the fact that he didn't call time out with the Celtics cutting a 22 point lead down to 4 before half?  And still somehow ran out of timeouts?  Or had Embiid playing defense with 5 fouls so that the Cs were able to waltz to the basket during crunch time?

I can't imagine what the issue is.

Now Larkin is out.

How injured are the Celtics when you have a problem with Shane Larkin being out.

This would be the year that a team can come back from 3-0.  Celtics have been underdogs for every game.  Including tonight.

Also keep in mind that Jaylen Brown is probably 60%.  Anyone watching can see that.

So looks like our rotation is down to 7.

Horford, Tatum, Rozier, Smart, 60% of Brown, Baynes, Morris.

Monroe got some minutes last game (an old school center with some low post moves, not very quick)...

There is a very real path for a comeback.  They win tonight, then it's back to Philly.  Game 7 looks very real.

At this point, I don't want the Sixers to win, I want them to get the message that they need to get better, and a 5 game defeat will send that message. The Celtics will only get better when they get Kyrie and Hayward back. The Sixers need to make a good draft pick at 10 and get a good free agent. They need to get Markelle serious minutes next season.

A trip to the ECF would only muddy the waters and cloud the message.

Intense game.  Embiid is an incredible player.  Hope he stays healthy for a long career as he is a shoo-in for the HOF if he does.  Game could have gone either way.  No real big leads, just close the whole way.

Both teams played like it was a game 7.  Sixers because it was an elimination game.  Celts because they could see the writing on the wall.  Lose this one, then back to Philly where they have had trouble winning on the road in the playoffs.  Then game 7 where anything can happen (like we just saw in 5).

Cleveland next.  Actually a reasonably good match-up for the Celtics considering, except for that pesky LeBron guy.  It really is all him.  Unfortunately the Celtics aren't any more healthy.  I did notice Jaylen Brown walking gingerly off the court in the 4th.  I suspect he would be the first guy tasked with guarding LeBron.   Wondered why the announcers didn't say anything.

Actually in the grand scheme of things, still is Golden State's to lose.

Rockets and Golden State looks like a good series, on paper.

More [most] importantly: did LeBron watch the Sixers last night and say "Yeah. I could play with these guys" or "Nope. Nothing there for me. Pass"

I think LeBron ends up in LA.  After all he has a house there.

Interesting that Fultz didn't leave the bench the whole series.  Believe he was the only one.  I think every other player on both teams got some garbage time minutes.  I knew he wasn't in the rotation, and maybe McConnell took away his potential minutes, but he is a talent.  We'll see if his shoulder is good, and he is out of his head.

His shoulder is fine, but he's shooting problems are still in his head

We need to get Fultz the same kind of mental training that Nelson Agholor received

He can get to the basket, has a good spin move, decent handle, good leaping ability and speed.  He had a triple double in the last game of the regular season. He's only 19, so i'm not surprised he was a little overwhelmed in his first NBA season.

Where Zig?

Are you ready?
Oh, I was ready. But tired. So I watched the highlights next day.
I’m a serious casual fan.
Hoping they can give the LeBronatics a run for their money, or at least a 5-game series.

My husband is convinced he’s seen Brad Stevens driving around in this general area. I think he’s mistaken, but C’s players do often live in the nice burbs around here... :D

I see where you might think that, but as I watched many Celtics games this year Kyrie surprised me with his ability to see the court , and make what I would call the correct "basketball play". Sure there was a times where he would take over a game, but generally it would be the right thing to do. Don't know if it's playing under Stevens or not playing with LeBron. He seems happier running his own show.

That's why i don't think Russell Westbrook is a great player. Too much of a ball hog, he puts up great stats, but he'll shoot the ball 30 times a game.

Same reason why i don't think Donavon Mitchell is great, he scores a lot of points, but doesn't have a great field goal percentage.

The Celtics have definitely picked up their defensive intensity since the playoffs started, maybe that's Brad Steven's influence, but they are a totally different team from the one that the Sixers played late in the regular season. I also think Horford and Brown are underrated. Playoff games are tighter than regular season games anyway, but the Celts have gone to another level defensively.

Post by: siamesedream on May 14, 2018, 04:11:07 PM
The Sixers last regular season meeting with the Celts was in January(just looked it up) so it wasn't late season. and it was a tight game, but I still think the celts have upped the defense since then.

All an act. Like if I’m hankering for a mental health day tomorrow and I start acting all, “*cough* I’m feeling worn out! Must be coming down with something! *swoon*”
The game wasn’t going well, so his exhaustion malady amped up. Meanwhile, next game, in Cleveland, when the C’s forget how to play and the Bronatics come out swinging, the narrative becomes, “LeBron fights through exhaustion to be the hero that Cleveland needs!”

I didn't want to seem the troll if I brought up how the Celtics seemed to be too young for the situation.  So many wide open threes that didn't fall.  And how the Cav's perimeter defense is really bad, and the Golden State will hit those threes that the young guys the C's had didn't hit.

Also...

I have never eaten at a PF Changs.  There is a local Chinese restaurant around the corner that I usually get my Chinese food from.

I thought the C's would win, they played great defense throughout the playoffs, although it's not an exciting brand of basketball, it's effective.

Wild ending!!

Don't know what I'm more aghast at.  The overturning of the charging foul, though I believe they got it right.  I hate that when a player was into his shot, that a player could just tuck in where the player needs to land and draw a foul.  Anyways LeBron was so outside the smiley face, it shouldn't have been reviewed.

The JR Smith forgetting what the score was.  After an FT.  It's not like it was during the flow of the game.  Things were stopped before the FT.  Time enough to take stock of the situation.

Unbelievable.

Games are spaced too far apart, this is ridiculous.

And too late for those of us who have to be “on” at 7:15 am.

The interest factor is not as strong for me on this series. I became fascinated with the C's playoff journey, and I was hyped for the rockets/gsw, but I'm not as into this final.

Once the C’s are out my interest level drops off. I mean, I keep my eyes out for great moments like the JR Smith debacle/LeBron reaction, but my already low personal investment drops to nearly nil.

The most relaxing way to watch a game. I refused to watch the iggs/vikes NFC championship game, but I couldn't resist the super bowl, even though it was sort of agonizing.

8-9:00 tip-off isn’t relaxing...my eyes are closing then on a school night. I can’t sleep in and I can’t be on autopilot if I’ve got a class.
My husband and kid are more invested, generally, in sports than I am. I’m take it or leave it 100% of the time.

Too many weapons.

Steph and Klay are cold.  KD lights it up.

Cavs really have one chance to avoid the sweep.

ABC needs to step up and let Doris Burke call the play-by-play

Actually I think the play-by-play is ok.  Mike Breen does a solid job.  I have a tough time with the color commentary.  I know Van Gundy knows the game, but it is really hard for me to listen to him.  He grates on me.  Mark Jackson brings nothing to the table.  Let her replace both of the ex-coaches (3 person booths usually don't work for me. Why do the networks cram them down our throat?).  She's being wasted on the sideline.  Just my opinion.

I agree she's being wasted; does she do color or play-by-play for NCAA broadcasts? I can't recall right now, it's been so long since March

I'm not sure either, though as she is a former player, I'd guess color.
