Title: Olympic Tri winner Gwen Jorgensen switching back to running
Post by: Coyote Mas Loco on November 08, 2017, 02:11:48 PM
This has generated as much or more buzz than Shalane Flanagan's win at NYC the other day.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2017/11/07/olympic-triathlon-champion-gwen-jorgensen-switching-marathon-ahead-tokyo-games/839784001/ (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2017/11/07/olympic-triathlon-champion-gwen-jorgensen-switching-marathon-ahead-tokyo-games/839784001/)

What are they saying on the tri-webs?

Runners are skeptical and keep pointing to her height (5'10") and 2:41 at NYC last year (off of just 40 miles a week, with long run of 16), and saying that she doesn't stand a chance to even make the team. Some are on the bandwagon.

I'm intrigued. 53:13 and 3rd in USA road 10 mile champs last year. That shows good potential for the full.

Skeptical, mostly

Hard to say who the Top 3 would even be at the Trials 2 years and change from now

Does she have any idea of the doping involved to win a marathon gold?

She’s joining Nike

Ha ha, funny!

I got to see her run at Worlds ITU
2 years ago, I was more wowed by her performance than watching either of the Olympic Trials that I observed.  It will be interesting to see what she does

Oops meant 2014.  When she got off the bike so far back.  The intensity that she ran was WOW!!

2015 was actually boring.  Got off the bike with the leaders...knew she had it.

Did she quit after getting punched while moonwalking (potentially on the wrong side of the road!) at a tri??

Also I read the first post and was about to comment that we needed to wait for the verdict from our Slowtwitch liason.  Then I read the second post.   :lambie:

Anybody remember Jack Bacheler?  He was 6'7" and placed 9th in the Olympic marathon.

My friend is 6'7 and when he gets down to 200 he looks bad.....170# at 6'7is freaky

Any discussion of Race Weight MUST include this quote [it's kinda like a rule]

When I was just running I wouldn't visit family while in taper.  Don't seem to have that problem for triathlon, but it might be the extra 10 pounds. (Swimming makes me fat)

In depth discussion from the Letsrun owners/experts. Pretty long but some interesting insights. I'm on the, decent chance to make the team but long shot for a medal let alone Gold medal. But with one in her pocket she has to aim high.

She's been injured most of this year, but over the past month has been back at it. Still time to get ready for the Olympic Trials but making that team is going to be very difficult.

Another one that may be interesting to watch is pro Jackie Hering.  She is now done with tri season and trying for a OQ atCali International.  With a 1:16 half off the bike a few weeks ago, should happen.
