I was quite disappointed with Jello when I tasted it for the first time in the US. It felt like an animal product to me from the get go. I never understood why people thought it was good. The kind I grew up on was way better filled with fruit and made of furit juices of all kinds. We used agar agar. It's far more delicious and sets much quicker than the animal based Jello.
We use agar agar and it is called "kanteen." Generally made with fruit juice.

Agar has very distinct work connotations to me. I don't think I can get around the idea that I am eating bacterial media.

And yes I know what jello is made of.  :d

Ha, me too!  We made agar phantoms for ultrasound work, and it just doesn't seem like food to me.
